Avengers: Infinity War is already in a number of theaters around the world and it hits the vast majority of locations tomorrow. As a result, the press tour is at an end and we're now going to have to wait until Ant-Man and The Wasp is released before hearing any more from Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige. However, even if he chooses not to promote the sequel, he's given us plenty this month!
Feige has confirmed plans for various characters to get their own movies or appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as well as shedding further light on the likes of Avengers 4 and Captain Marvel.
We also have updates on Marvel's Comic-Con plans, the status of Black Panther 2, and what the deal is with the likes of Namor the Sub-Mariner and Nova. Now, we've collected all of those new details and reveals - some of which have been covered on the site and many which haven't - for your viewing pleasure. All you guys need to do to see the whole list is click on either one of the buttons below.
Keeping The Title Of Avengers 4 A Secret Was A Mistake
If you thought that Avengers: Infinity War was shrouded in secrecy, that's nothing compared to Avengers 4. We still don't know the movie's title and Feige admitted that Marvel "haven't decided exactly" when they will. He did, however, add that the commotion surrounding the name has "gotten entirely out of hand" because they "have no chance to live up to any expectations of what it's gonna be." Despite the whole Khan controversy in Star Trek Into Darkness, it seems studios haven't learned!
"[It] sort of backfired, if I'm honest with you, because the notion was to not talk about it so the focus was to be on [Infinity War]." With any luck, we'll learn what the title is this year!
Marvel Studios Might Tackle The Horror Genre Next
Feige has now brought a lot of different genres to the MCU over the years and that's something which is bound to expand moving forward. Now, with Fox looking to enter the world of horror with The New Mutants, might Marvel Studios wind up doing the same somewhere down the line?
"Horror, did you mean a movie like Texas Chainsaw Massacre or Hostel or a Friday the 13th or a Poltergeist? Poltergeist is a little bit more my wheelhouse, that's such a great movie and it scared the heck out of me but it's really fun. I don't know, I certainly would like to play with as many genres as possible." Honestly, it's hard to say which MCU character would fit a horror movie!
Big Things Are Coming For Hawkeye
Hawkeye has been absent from almost all marketing materials for Avengers: Infinity War and his popularity has surged as a result. Believe it or not, #WheresHawkeye is something Feige is happy with!
"There are big, big story things coming up for Hawkeye and Jeremy Renner is as strong an actor as anyone in the MCU and awesome as this character," he explained when asked about the hero's future. "I love that people go from ‘Oh, Hawkeye is just lucky to be there,’ to ‘Oh, where is he? He’s not there? What's going to happen? We need Hawkeye. We want more Hawkeye."
The Complications Surrounding Namor The Sub-Mariner
There really aren't all that many major characters who Marvel Studios haven't brought to the big screen but Namor the Sub-Mariner stands out as a hero whose MCU debut is long overdue. Asked about where things stand with him, Feige confirmed that the King of Atlantis is still with Universal.
"I think there’s a way to probably figure it out but it does have — it’s not as a clean or clear as the majority of the other characters," he explained, making it clear that the rival studio is making bringing Namor to the MCU even more difficult than a solo movie for The Hulk becoming a reality.
Marvel Studios Is Skipping Comic-Con This Year
If you were hoping Marvel Studios might steal the show at this year's Comic-Con by revealing its Phase 4 slate, think again. Feige has confirmed that they'll be skipping the event, meaning we won't be getting a sneak peek at Captain Marvel, Avengers 4, or the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel. Instead, he wants to let the dust settle from Avengers: Infinity War (it's that big of a deal, folks).
Marvel Studios Is Developing An Eternals Movie
There were rumours of an Eternals movie becoming a reality and while the characters are definitely pretty obscure, so were the Guardians of the Galaxy once upon a time! "Eternals is one of many many many things that we are actively beginning to have creative discussions about to see if we believe in them enough to put them on a slate," Feige teased during the press tour.
You have to believe Feige will jump at the chance to make things right after losing the Inhumans!
He's Not Thinking About The X-Men And Fantastic Four...Yet
It was inevitable that Feige would be faced with questions about the X-Men and Fantastic Four with that Disney/Fox deal expected to be finalised next summer but the Marvel Studios boss made it clear in multiple interviews that he's not giving the characters any thought until the whole thing is confirmed. He also noted that it's unlikely we'll see those characters in the MCU until Phase 5 kicks off.
Still, despite what Feige said, it's hard to imagine him not giving the heroes at least some thought!
Captain Marvel Will Deliver A "Unique" Origin Story
We still don't know whether Captain Marvel will end up making an appearance in Avengers: Infinity War but Feige promises that her movie will be "one of the most unique and inspiring origin stories."
He's also said that there's a very good reason why we'll see characters like Agent Coulson and Ronan the Accuser return, while we'll reportedly see a Nick Fury "who has reached a point in his career where he thought the Cold War’s over and the best days are behind him." Interestingly, Feige has also indicated that we'll get a Mar-Vell who isn't necessarily that close to the source material.
Kevin Feige Isn't Afraid To Poke Fun At James Cameron
Earlier this week, Avatar and Terminator director James Cameron tore into the MCU and said he hopes moviegoers "start getting Avenger fatigue here pretty soon." While he later claimed he "loves" the movies, his comments were definitely insulting, so how exactly did Feige feel about that?
"Uh, he loves the movies!" Feige said before standing tall, fist pumping in the air. "That’s awesome! Wow, James Cameron loves our movies! That’s exciting!?" Needless to say, it's highly unlikely that the filmmaker will ever receive an offer to work on a Marvel Studios movie in the near future.
The Spider-Man: Homecoming Sequel Will Be A Global Affair
There have been rumours for months now that the untitled Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel will take place in various locations around the world but Feige confirmed during the press tour that New York won't be the main setting. Instead, Spidey is swinging over to the other side of the pond!
"We start filming early July. We film in London. We shot first film in Atlanta. And we shoot a lot of films in London but there’s another reason we’re shooting in London which is, yes, Spidey, of course, will spend some time in New York, but he’ll spend some time in other parts of the globe."
That's bound to have ramifications for the wall-crawler and will take him outside his comfort zone.
Marvel Has Found A Villain For The Spider-Man: Homecoming Sequel
With shooting set to kick off in July, it probably won't surprise you to learn that Marvel Studios has chosen a villain for the sequel. Feige wouldn't reveal the character's identity but confirmed that, "We love the notion of taking Spider-Man to places around the world that we haven't seen him in before. And we have a villain who I think will play into that nicely." Are we getting Kraven the Hunter? The Hobgoblin? The Chameleon? It's impossible to say but any of them and more are likely.
A Moon Knight Movie Is Definitely A Possibility
With "Marvel Knights" characters like Daredevil, The Punisher, and Luke Cage all tied up with Marvel TV and Netflix, there aren't many street-level superheroes left for Feige to play with. As a result, you probably won't be surprised to learn that he has his eye on Moon Knight. He's said to be one of many characters the studio is considering for the MCU at some point in the not too distant future.
The Phase 4 Slate Won't Be Revealed Until After Avengers 4
We've already told you that Marvel Studios won't be at Comic-Con and if you were looking for specifics on when the Phase 4 slate would be revealed, it won't be until after Avengers 4 is released.
Whether or not it will be at another Marvel Event or something similar isn't clear but the latter seems like a likely option, especially as the one held way back in 2014 was such a rousing success.
Black Panther 2 Won't Happen Without Ryan Coogler At The Helm
Despite its unprecedented level of box office success, a sequel to Black Panther still hasn't been announced. Thankfully, Feige promises it won't be happening unless Ryan Coogler returns to direct.
"We definitely want Ryan to come back and that’s actively being worked out right now. When will it be? A lot of it will be when Ryan wants to and not rushing anything, but I think we have an idea of when it will be. But, again, [we’re] not going to announce any post-Avengers 4 movies until hopefully after Avengers 4, which is another reason we’re not going to Comic-Con."
It's hard to see why Coogler wouldn't come back so here's hoping we hear something official soon.
Nova Is Finally Coming To The MCU
Well, this is long overdue. James Gunn has made it clear that he's not a fan of Nova which is why the character has never blasted into the Guardians of the Galaxy movies but it seems Feige has some other ideas in mind for him. What that will be remains to be seen but it sounds like he'll factor into Phase 4.
"[If] we have a big board with a bunch of characters that have more immediate potential, Nova is on that board," he said much to the delight of fans. "Because of the connection to the Guardians universe, because there are more than one examples to pull from in the comics that are interesting. And you’re absolutely right, he was in the earliest drafts of the [Guardians of the Galaxy]."
