AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR - 20 Huge Rumors Which Ended Up Being Totally False - SPOILERS Follow
The hype surrounding Avengers: Infinity War was huge in the years leading up to its release and there were lots of rumours as a result. Now, we're looking at the craziest ones which never came to pass...
Avengers: Infinity War is finally in theaters (it was originally supposed to be released tomorrow) and while there's plenty to talk about when it comes to the movie's biggest twists and turns, we're now also able to debunk a lot of rumours which have been doing the rounds since it was first announced all those years ago. Some made sense and others are completely insane but all are very interesting.
From surprise resurrections to unexpected cameos and big screen debuts, had even one of these come true, Avengers: Infinity War would have been a very different movie and either a lot better or considerably worse depending on your outlook. So, what you'll find here is an in-depth look at all of the rumours and theories which ended up being proved false, many of which you may not have seen.
So, click on the buttons below to take a look and share your thoughts on them in the usual place.
Thanos Will Find An Ally In Ultron
Ultron remains one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's best villains and so it's easy to see why there was so much excitement surrounding the rumour that Thanos would end up recreating the villainous android in Avengers: Infinity War. How and why that would come to pass wasn't clear but given Ultron's cosmic adventures in the comic books, it was a twist with a whole lot of potential.
Iron Man IS The Soul Stone
If you're looking for weird rumours here, then this story definitely fits the bill. According to one site, the Soul Stone was either fused into his DNA by his father, implanted in his new arc reactor, or simply what keeps him alive. How the hell that would have worked is hard to say but it would have been borderline nonsensical and unnecessarily complicated and what we got in the movie was much better.
Spider-Man Meets Silk
When it was reported that one of Peter Parker's castmates known only as "Cindy" would be showing up in Avengers: Infinity War, some outlets immediately jumped to the conclusion that it meant Cindy Moon would be making an appearance in the movie. Why on Earth (or Titan) Silk would show up here is hard to say but the only supporting character from Spidey's world to appear was Ned Leeds.
Yondu Returns
Despite the fact he died and was cremated at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, it took no time at all for this rumour to start doing the rounds. While an explanation for how it would happen was never revealed, it was said that he would be resurrected in Avengers: Infinity War with most fans theorising that would come as a result of a flashback or something to do with the Infinity Stones.
Captain Marvel Joins The Team
Over the past couple of years, we've heard what can only be described as "countless" rumours in regards to Captain Marvel showing up in Avengers: Infinity War. While she was ultimately referenced in the movie's after-credits scene, that wasn't shot until January of this year so it's clear that all these stories about her debuting here before her solo outing were little more than glorified fan theories.
The Death Of Captain America
Before the release of Captain America: Civil War, rumours swirled that Steve Rogers would meet his maker. The same thing happened in the build-up to Avengers: Infinity War reaching theaters and that final trailer showing Cap battling Thanos only helped increase speculation. Thankfully, Captain America lived to fight another day but the same couldn't be said for several other members of The Avengers!
Loki Will Serve Thanos
The God of Mischief has been a staple of the Marvel Cinematic Universe since 2011 so no one was surprised when reports of him being a big part of this movie surfaced. It was also reported that he would end up betraying Thor (again) in order to serve as Thanos' right-hand man. Instead, the former villain made his allegiances to his brother and Asgard clear and ended up getting killed as a result.
Heimdall Holds The Soul Stone
For a long time, the prevailing theory was that "Thanos" = (T)esseract, (A)ether, (N)ecklace, (O)rb, (S)cepter, and that the "H" would stand for Heimdall. In fact, there were several rumours that Asgard's gatekeeper would be linked to the Soul Stone and that was how he was able to see across the universe and control the Bifrost. Alas, he simply ended up dead at the hands of the Mad Titan in short order.
Mjolnir Is Reforged
While Avengers: Infinity War was shooting in the UK, the original Mjolnir was spotted on set. That instantly led to speculation that we'd see the original hammer back in action but the only weapon the God of Thunder wields in this movie is the Stormbreaker. It's possible this could have been a scene for Avengers 4 seeing as that will feature flashbacks but for now, consider this another bogus report.
Spider-Man And Nebula Team Up
While Spider-Man and Nebula both ended up on Titan by the time the final act rolled around, neither of them interacted with each other to a significant extent so who knows where the rumour that they would become "best friends" came from. There's a chance that this could play out in Avengers 4 but it seems highly unlikely considering the fact that the wall-crawler is currently a pile of dust in space.
Quicksilver Races Back Into Action
One of the most shocking moments in Avengers: Age of Ultron came when Quicksilver was gunned down by the titular villain and died in Hawkeye's arms. That was a shame because it felt like the character had some potential in this world so fans were very excited to learn that he could race back into action via what was described as either a "weird resurrection" or Time Stone tomfoolery.
Hang Ten For The Silver Surfer
A fairly recent rumour which surfaced after news of the Fox/Disney merger found its way online, there was no sign of Silver Surfer in Avengers: Infinity War and while that wasn't surprising, it was still a disappointment. After all, we've known for years that Kevin Feige wants this character and Galactus in the MCU but he clearly couldn't make it happen and it was better to keep the focus on Thanos.
Agent Coulson Reunites With The Avengers
There have been rumblings for a while now about Phil Coulson reuniting with The Avengers after his "death" in the 2012 movie but it's never happened. We know that he'll be popping up in Captain Marvel (likely in flashbacks) but it seems the fact he's alive is going to be kept a secret for the time being. As a result, this rumour about his return in Avengers: Infinity War obviously never came to pass.
Adam Warlock Joins The Fight
Following the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, it was clear that Adam Warlock is finally ready to make his MCU debut. James Gunn was quick to point out that it would happen in Vol. 3 but that didn't stop some rumour mongers from claiming the powerful hero would have a role to play in Avengers: Infinity War (which made sense looking at the comics but never materialised).
Now Black Panther Has The Soul Stone
So, yeah, pretty much everyone in the Marvel Cinematic Universe had something to do with the Soul Stone at one point or another it seems! Both before and after Black Panther was released, it was reported that Wakanda's Vibranium and those heart-shaped herbs were linked to the Infinity Stone and that's why Thanos' forces ended up attacking the nation. Instead, it was all The Vision's fault!
The Original Ant-Man Helps Out
Seeing Hank Pym come face to face with Tony Stark and the rest of The Avengers is going to be a very gratifying moment for comic book fans but reports that it would come to pass in Avengers: Infinity War were quickly confirmed as being incorrect. Whether or not he'll now join Ant-Man and The Wasp in Avengers 4 remains to be seen but it's possible that he'll be among Thanos' many victims.
S.W.O.R.D. Replaces S.H.I.E.L.D.
S.H.I.E.L.D. never had a particularly significant presence in the Marvel Cinematic Universe before the spy organisation fell in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, so it made perfect sense for outer space agency S.W.O.R.D. to be introduced here, right? Well, yes, but that doesn't mean Marvel Studios felt the same way and there sadly wasn't so much a hint in regards to the existence of this popular group.
Peter Dinklage Is Pip The Troll
As many of you correctly guessed, Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage ended up playing Eitri the dwarf in this movie but the news of his casting initially generated a lot of speculation about him taking on Infinity Gauntlet character Pip the Troll. The fact he was spotted with a crop of bright red hair only led to an increase in these rumours but Marvel did a great job of keeping his role under wraps.
Millie Bobby Brown Joins The Team (Or Something)
When Stranger Things breakout star Millie Bobby Brown was spotted visiting the set of Avengers: Infinity War, it didn't take at all long for us to hear stories that she had joined the cast of the Marvel Studios movie in a secretive role. In fairness, you can see why Kevin Feige would want to snap up the talented youngster but it's now hard to imagine where she could have possibly fit into the film.
The Black Order's Voices
There was a lot of speculation that The Black Order would be voiced by some big name actors, with one report claiming we'd see Mark Hamill as Corvus Glaive, Bill Nighy as Ebony Maw, Whoopi Goldberg as Proxima Midnight, and Peter Dinklage as Cull Obsidian. That would have been cool because any one of those actors would have been a great fit for what proved to be a group of forgettable villains.
