AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Co-Director Joe Russo Discusses The "Special Connection" Between Thanos & Tony Stark

As fans know, Thanos has a personal connection to heroes such as Gamora and Drax, but now Joe Russo has addressed how the villain connects personally to Iron Man himself. Hit the jump for more details.

Avengers: Infinity War is fast approaching, and with it begins the conclusion to years of build up that began with 2008’s Iron Man. This set up saw not only the establishing of the six Infinity Stones, but included setting the stage for the confrontation between the Avengers and Thanos.

However, despite the buildup over the years, the Mad Titan still has little connection to many of the characters in infinity War. Among the few that do have ties to Thanos, are Gamora, Drax and Nebula. Yet, the villain seemingly doesn’t connect to any of the Avengers personally, aside from playing a role in their encounters with a few of the Infinity Stones.

But in a recent interview, Joe Russo explained the interesting connection he sees between Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man and Josh Brolin’s Thanos:

“I think he has the most specific connection to Tony because Tony is a futurist, and he has predicted a threat like Thanos. It’s lived in his brain even though he couldn’t name it. Tony is the most desperately driven, down to the core, to react against something like Thanos, although all the heroes will face a threat, no matter who it is or where it comes from. But I think this is intrinsic to Tony’s psychology, and because Tony started it all with Iron Man, he has a special connection to the threat that’s facing him.”

That’s certainly an interesting perspective on the Titan’s connection to Tony Stark and is something that rings true. After all, we’ve seen Stark’s desire to stave off potential threats drive his decisions in Iron Man 3, Avengers: Age of Ultron, and to a degree in Captain America: Civil War. This connection also establishes a similarity between the villain and Stark, for the Mad Titan — as the Russo brothers recently explained — is also seeking to prevent potential catastrophes, though Thanos' methods are clearly more twisted than the Avenger's.

@noahthegrand - is it better to be feared or respected and I say: is it too much to ask for both?

“I think he has the most specific connection to Tony because Tony is a futurist"

No. He became a futurist after the events of Avengers when he saw an alien invasion and realized that aliens could attack again. After AoU he 'taps out' because he's not concerned with the future at all.

Civil War further demonstrated this by showing he was more focused on the immediate circumstances of the accords and the fallout of the events in Sokovia instead of the potential future ramifications of alienating Steve and the Avengers.

"and he has predicted a threat like Thanos"

No. He did not predict a threat like Thanos, other than understanding if aliens attack once they can do so again. THOR was the one who predicted Thanos, he addressed the Infinity Stones of which two were on the planet. Tony should have noticed this, but did not despite examining it closely with Bruce Banner.

"It’s lived in his brain even though he couldn’t name it."

No. He self-stated his decision to 'tap out' and spent a long time messing around during Homecoming, Civil War. He does a bit of crime fighting/superhero stuff still but he's effectively benched from AoU to Infinity War.

"Tony is the most desperately driven, down to the core, to react against something like Thanos, although all the heroes will face a threat, no matter who it is or where it comes from. But I think this is intrinsic to Tony’s psychology, and because Tony started it all with Iron Man, he has a special connection to the threat that’s facing him."

No. The Guardians have a stronger connection to Thanos, particularly Gamora, Nebula and Drax. Tony has no connection to Thanos. No matter how much people try to speak nonsense about a potential connection, the two have nothing in common.

@Scarilian - I heavy agree about Gamora, Nebula and Drax having the connection with Thanos.

While I'm not surprised that they are focusing in ironman (he is the star), I honestly believe Gamora and Nebula should be the "main characters" of this film.
They are the only two characters that have an intimate history with Thanos.

I honestly will be upset if they try to out more focus on the Tony-Thanos relationship than Thanos-Nebula.

I agree, i'm not surprised by the focus being on Iron Man. After-all, this could potentially be his last movie/movies. Though i do believe the story could be suited more with Gamora or Nebula gaining focus, at least to set-up Thanos and the comparison between him and a hero.

"I honestly will be upset if they try to out more focus on the Tony-Thanos relationship than Thanos-Nebula."

Same, the Thanos-Nebula relationship is one of the more interesting ones and in the comics she is effectively the solution to the crisis at hand.

@Scarilian - lol are you disputing the directors and writers of the film or do you think the author said all this

@Scarilian - no offense, but i really don’t care to see a movie with gamora and nebula as leads. they work a lot better as part of an ensemble without being the primary focus of that group of characters.

Honestly this has been happening for a while now. It's unfortunate but that's how people get at that age, he clearly has dementia and he's had balancing issues in the past that hint towards Alzheimers being the main thing he is suffering from. I've looked after family members with similar symptoms. It's probably one of the worst ways to go as you forget your own life.

He has good and bad days, i've heard things like this before and he's had to cancel events. I expect Disney picked up on the increase in bad days and recording his future cameos in 2017 as a result. They have been hiding it, probably out of a mixture of potential profitability/marketing mixed with Stan's own desire to appear as a father/grandfather figure to children.

@Scarilian - The article we're all dreading is gonna appear someday soon. This [frick]ing hurts just to think about.

I've always said I'm not afraid of anything, but [frick] dementia is the most terrifying thing to me. I feel so bad for him.
