Avengers: Infinity War brings together Earth's Mightiest Heroes and the Guardians of the Galaxy but the Marvel Cinematic Universe is about to get even more epic with the addition of the X-Men and Fantastic Four. That's a long way off as of right now, however, and the way these characters will be brought into this world remains a hot topic of debate. The Russos are a big fan of using Secret Wars.
As you may recall, they recently noted their interest in that storyline and the ways it could be used to add the X-Men and Fantastic Four to the MCU. However, while many fans assumed they were referring to the recent Jonathan Hickman penned version of Secret Wars which mashed together a bunch of alternate realities, it turns out that Joe Russo was talking about the original, classic comic book.
"Hopefully they’re about to get their hands on a few of them. Listen, my second favorite character growing up, and one of my prized possessions in my comic book collection is Incredible Hulk #181, which of course is the first appearance of Wolverine. I feel like the mission of the Marvel Universe is to keep expanding and surprising people. Surprise them with casting choices, surprise them with story choices. If we’re moving into this world of crossover events, certainly that affords opportunity for other large-scale stories from the books like Secret Wars — which was another favorite comic of mine as a kid."
The Russos are clearly excited about the prospect of seeing the Fantastic Four and X-Men in the MCU then and it's hard to think of anyone better than them to handle the introduction of characters like Wolverine and they'd no doubt adapt a storyline like Secret Wars perfectly.
