Tessa Thompson & Karen Gillan Think Marvel's Rumoured "All-Female Team-Up" Was Blown Out Of Proportion

Three stars of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Karen Gillan, Elizabeth Olsen and Tessa Thompson, all recently admitted that the rumours of an all-female team-up movie may have been blown out of proportion..

Last November, Thor: Ragnarok star Tessa Thompson, who played fan-favourite character Valkyrie, generated a mass of intrigue and excitement among fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe by revealing that the women of the franchise had pitched an idea for an all-female team-up movie to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige.

However, now Thompson's tone on the project has changed. The actress admitted to Observer that the excitement surrounding the supposed project may have been a bit premature.

I don’t know. That was kind of an offhand thing, and then the press really ran with it. The extent to which the press ran with it is also an expression of what ripe a time it is for something like that. That people are hungry for it, that people are interested in it.

I think, regardless, Marvel is making their Black Widow movie and they are doing Captain Marvel and the female characters in the big team-up movies tend to be, at least for me, some of the strongest elements.

At the recent premiere for Avengers: Infinity War, two stars were asked about the project - and had similarly disparaging comments to add. Karen Gillan, who reprises her role as Nebula from the Guardians of the Galaxy films, explained to Variety the origin of the rumors - that being an offhand comment evolving into an ambush of Feige.

I think that is just sort of a thing we were talking about casually. I remember we'd all taken a big photo, like a Marvel class-photo, and all the women got together afterwards and we were talking and we were like "Wouldn't it be so nice if everyday were like this and we were just all around each other?" And we were like "Let's make it happen."

And then I think Brie Larson and Tessa Thompson marched up to Kevin Feige and said "You need to do this!" and then we all surrounded him. But that's the last I've heard of it so, who knows?

Elizabeth Olsen, who plays Scarlet Witch in the film, also believes that the prospect was blown way out of proportion - simply stating "I think that was something that was blown out of proportion by the media, so I don't know."

What do you think about the actress' comments? Would you like the all-female team-up movie to come into fruition? You can check out both clips of Gillan and Olsen, respectively, below:

Poor feige, they went all gangster on him.

Bigger picture: it's kind of awesome that these actors care enough about these roles to proactively petition for this kind of thing, and also a great sign that they see Feige as approachable enough to actually do it.

Compare that to the stories about Amy Pascal and Andrew Garfield (even before it all went pear-shaped). And does anyone think Kevin Tsujihara communicates with another human being through any medium besides passive-aggressive outgoing voicemail messages?

"You've reached Kevin Tsujihara's number, I can't come to the phone right now. If you're an angry shareholder, I didn't do it. If you're Ben Affleck, [frick] off. If you're James Wan, I've been meaning to tell you that Aquaman is canceled for months, but... well, it's canceled. And if you're a board member, just remember I still have all the blackmail evidence, so don't you dare think of firing me. If that doesn't cover it, leave a message!"

It's a dumb anyway, its not like there is an all male Superhero movie, or even an all male team in the comics. Every major team has a mix of male and female characters. If you do an all female movie, then you should do an all male movie as well, and both would be unnecessary, there is no actual story reason for an all male or all female team.

Tessa Thompson should just stay silent, to stay polite. I really like her as an actress, she's a beautiful and talented woman, but she's also become puffed up and snobbish, and nearly every time she speaks up, whether about social issues or just the MCU, she puts her foot in her mouth, again, to stay polite. She was the first to overhype this possible project on social media when she said "Women ruled supreme". Twice. I truly believe she is a perfect example of a fake feminist who seemingly praises women when in reality she only praises herself.

In any case, I for one would be very happy if such a movie were to be made. Not with every female character in the MCU, that would make no sense and some are really not that interesting, but a few of them. Gamora, Hope, Widow, Wanda, Okoye and Nakia, Valkyrie, maybe even Quake (one can dream) or Sharon Carter, and make it a truly epic worldwide spy movie with cosmic consequences, maybe tied to the Savage Land and bring in Shanna on the team.

I dont remember if it was lady liberators or a-force, but having the all female team beat up the brainwashed male heroes is the only story that would make sense here

Well when people really want something it has a tendency to get blown out of proportion really quickly. But yes the time is definitely ripe. Will love to finally see Black Widow get her solo movie. And after that let’s get Scarlet Witch her solo movie.

@TheUnworthyThor - both of those characters are better as supportive characters. They don't need solo movies

@warmachinerocks - A solo movie isn’t something anyone ever needs. But after Avengers 4 somebody has to get a movie. We already know Black Widow is one of them. But then who else are we talking about? Which characters do you think are screaming for solo movies? Which female superhero does Marvel have that has more history and more solo adventures than Scarlet Witch after Black Widow and Captain Marvel?

In a universe where a person named the Grandmaster likes to kidnap people and have the fight for his amusement and who also enjoys employing women to capture these champions (and also loves orgies) people are still finding a hard time figuring how a team of all females could possibly exist? I mean really?

@TheUnworthyThor - Didnt the Grandmaster lose all his benefits at the end of Thor Ragnarok? He was about to be murdered by those scavengers

@auditore - I’m sure an Elder of the Universe isn’t going to let a little setback ruin his fun for long. But really I don’t even mean specifically do that kind of story. I just mean this is a universe with that level of possibility and insanity. There are infinite amount of stories that are possible to tell about a group of women.

@TheUnworthyThor - Exactly! The only one's who "can't see it happening..." are just too stuck in their own pseudo-masculinity to contemplate it. A group of female superheroes that don't need a male?? IMPOSSIBLE

Sounds more like to me that they went off shouting to the high heavens about it and Feige slapped their wrist and told them it’s not happening and to stop talking about it

When I first read about this All-Female team talk, I could not figure out how it would all work without looking like a gimmick. I figure Kevin Feige is a practical thinking kind of guy and I believe while its nice that he has a group of actresses that love the world Marvel Studios has created -there is just no way to make such a film possible. Once you start selling out to do a gimmick -you lose portions of the audience that see through the façade. Marvel Studios would lose its credibility.

Now with that said, Marvel can certainly do a female dominated cast of characters in a film. Black Widow could have female antagonists like Darkstar or another Black Widow like Yelena Belova. You could create a story of NEW female characters interacting with the established ones. But trying to pull together existing female MCU characters that are all over the map in space & on earth to pull off a gimmick would stretch believability.

@String - I'm sure with a really good writer it could work. Maybe they can't use all the women but several of them would work.
