Over the past few days, Kevin Pennington has been using his Twitter page to update his fans on a secretive movie role he was auditioning for. The 24-year old actor's largest role to date has been as a cast member on the TV remake
90210; and happens to be a self-proclaimed Star Wars aficionado:
Though the messages were vague, they caught the attention of
MarvelousNews.com who was able to get in touch with a source inside the Marvel Studios. Not only are they confirming Pennington's addition to Marvel Studio's
The Avengers movie, but have revealed further details about the role he has landed in upcoming superhero ensemble film. Though the site says they have yet to confirm these details with other sources, here's what they have found:
- He is signed with Marvel Studios, NOT Fox, Sony or any other film studio.
- He will not appear as the new Spider-Man or as a member of X-Men First Class.
- Plans are for his character to be in Avengers films and other team-related films.
- He will be a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, but also a fan favorite character from the comics (the character's origin may be changed to fit the movie, and may never have been in S.H.I.E.L.D. or Avenger in the comics)
If this turns out to be true, could Pennington be portraying the Ultimates version of Marvel's famed archer Clint Barton, known to fans as Hawkeye? According to Marvel's character bio page, the description of Pennington's role
does seem to fit along the lines of the comics:
'A former Olympic archer, Clint Barton became a U.S. intelligence agent over a decade ago. Active around the world, he was present for the liberation of Kosovo and Afghanistan, as well as the fall of the Berlin Wall. He became a close friend and frequent colleague of fellow agent Nick Fury, and the two operatives were key founders of the modern intelligence agency S.H.I.E.L.D. Both rose through the ranks until Fury became the agency's director and Barton (code-named Hawkeye) became an elite agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s black ops division, often partnered with ex-KGB espionage legend Natasha Romanov (code-named Black Widow).'
The last rumors of Hawkeye even being included in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was when
The Hurt Locker star Jeremy Renner mentioned meeting with the studio to possibly take the role. Has Pennington stepped into part, or are we looking at getting another character that will be re-tooled for film use?
