On April's Fools Day, IESB reported that occasional actor, and creator and head writer of the television programs Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly, and Astonishing X-Men in Marvel Comics, Joss Whedon, is on the list of guys to direct Marvel's hero clash, The Avengers. LA Times, wondering if it were true, got word from Marvel insider that it was true.

"After some checking, insiders at Marvel Studios say no director has been signed yet but that Whedon was on the short-list and conversations took place. This could be promising, Whedonites."

Joss is currently writing & producing "Cabin In The Woods", which stars Chris Hemsworth(Thor).

NOOOO, don't give it to him, give it to an ESTABLISHED director. One with credits that DON'T suck. Seriously Buffy was awful, as was Firefly. Never saw Dollhouse but got told it sucked. This guy is a TV director, why on Earth would they give the job of directing the most important Marvel film EVER to this loser. Give it Peter Jackson, that guy knows what he is doing.

If all else fails Letterier, considering that he is actually interested in the Marvel Universe and has done a fantastic job on a Marvel film before.

but seriously Peter Jackson should be the top of that list.

Not an awful choice, but there are better choices still. I'd rather see Abrams, Ridley Scott, Jackson, etc.

But hey, I'd take Whedon over Leterrier. I know I sound like a broken record at this point, but Clash sucked.
Quasimodo
Quasimodo - 4/2/2010, 7:22 PM
give it to james cameron. :p
Ryden
Ryden - 4/2/2010, 7:23 PM
@Tyler- But TIH didn't, Letterier is not my first choice but he is a lot more qualified and able than Whedon. Clash is just one bad movie, every director has one.

Everything Whedon has been involevd in sucked immensley IMO, plus he's a novice director anyway. :P

Abrams and Scott would be cool, but my number 1 pick is Jackson ;)

@Multi- Del Toro is an interesting choice, he would do some cool things with the Thor aspect of things. Don;t know how he'd handle the rest though..still...a LOT better than Whedon.

@Ozy-....ANNNNNNND Peter Jackson :)

Yeah, TIH was good, but it skimped on character development and depth. I want Avengers to be more than that.

Clash isn't the only bad movie from Leterrier. Transporter 1/2.

I liked Firefly.

I totally agree that there are better choices than Whedon, but I don't think he's an awful choice.

Del Toro is an interesting possibility.

@Ozy- You're nuts man, Peter Jackson is one of the best directors in Hollywood...LOTR shows he can handle action and character development aswell as dealing with a lot of storylines at once and a lot of stars.

@Tyler- I would have to disagree, I actually thought Letterier showed a lot of development with Banner...from hating and despising his other-half to attemtping to control it etc. The Incredible Hulk is one of my favourite CBM's actually ;)

Multi: Isn't Del Toro supposed to be starting two Hobbit movie around the first of next year?

He would be a great choice.
InTylerWeTrust
InTylerWeTrust - 4/2/2010, 7:43 PM
I thought Banner stayed the same pretty much the entire movie. He always wanted to get rid of Hulk, he only used it in the final fight as a last resort. The only thing that suggests that Banner changed was his smile at the very end.

Maybe I'm a bit biased because of my pissed-off-edness from seeing Clash. Maybe not. IDK. At least we can agree that there are better choices than Whedon and Leterrier.

Peter Jackson would be great, he blended great action, special effects and characters in LOTR. He can do the same with the Avengers. I liked his King Kong to.

I can see it, he was in control of all those random characters on Buffy and made them work together so I'm ok with it.

I dont know much about directors but i watched all of buffy and it was GREAT. He made all the different characters and personalities of the buffy characters so i think it will be good if he is director.

What's what all the Whedon hate? Is he inexperienced? Sure. Bad? No. For those who doubt, watch Serenity. That movie was made on a tiny budget and is one of the best and most underrated sci-fi films out there.
Ryden
Ryden - 4/2/2010, 7:53 PM
@Tyler- Yeah certainly, neither one of them are near my top choices but I still say Letterier is better than Whedon...:) Jackson FTW.

Now Whedon is definately not the BEST choice to direct it but he is an incredibly skilled writer, producer, and director.

But for people who say his resume is filled with terrible work, i say this
are you [frick]ing retarded?
I am a 'Whedonite' if thats what I have to be called, although I just prefer a big fan. Buffy is a legendary show and Angels first 3 seasons were fantastic, with the last 2 being mediocre.
Firefly is one of my all time favorite peices of cinematic venture along with Serenity.
To say that his work sucks is just ridiculous and to say that he is not established or is incapable of doing the work required to direct the Avengers is just incorrect.
He is one of the most recognizable names and faces within the genre of nerdom and is beloved by almost everyone, including critics, intellectuals, feminists, fanboys, as well as anyone involved with his MULTIPLE successful projects.
A TV show being cancelled says nothing to the calibre of its work but to it availability to score high ratings.
Joss Whedon is pure awesome and while he MAY not be the man to do this movie (and Im not convinced he isnt), any comicbook movie would benefit from his involvement.
so kiss my ass Whedon haters

If Peter Jackson was offered, and actually accepted the chair for The Avengers, I would just freakin' do some horribly ridiculous insanely unstable madness in the streets of L.A., being too excited to remain rational with news like that bottled up inside.

It's funny, I'm watching Fellowship of the Ring as we speak ;)

I just can't understand how someone can prefer Leterrier over the likes of Jackson, Ridley Scott, JJ Abrams, and Del Toro, who are all proven in action, storytelling, and depth, not just action and a bit of storytelling. He's a back up choice, no more, no less.

@ realfirstavenger: Just in reply to your statements about Whedon - Sorry dude, this guys movie sensibilities blow enormous farts at the audience.
He can stay with comics and T.V., but I have never been even close to being happy with any film stuff I've seen from him.
realfirstavenger
realfirstavenger - 4/2/2010, 8:06 PM
Oh and I saw Clash of the Titans last night and was unimpressed
the over the top acting from almost every character, and Worthingtons inability to inspire made the movie fall flat
plus I found each of the battles anti-climactic and rushed
NO TO LETERRIOR
incredible hulk was great but make him a producer like Favreau
each of the directors contributing to the characters original movies should produce. Brannagh, Favreau, Johnson and Letterior would make a dream producing team
Lucasberg
Lucasberg - 4/2/2010, 8:08 PM
@InTylerWeTrust:
Leterrier does not have anything close to the vision and spark of imagination, as Jackson or Del Toro. Scott hasn't done anything close to Alien or Blade Runner since well, Alien or Blade Runner really, soooo, I'm just sort of disenchanted. I think Abrams is a great writer, but his direction still feels a little bit too GIMMICKY for me, but I am still interested though.
Jackson or Bust!!!!!

@lucas
what movies are you referring to?
the only MOVIE hes directed is Serenity and it was fantastic
its an ensemble movie incorporating a cast of varying temperments and characteristics and there is a place for each of them among the movie.
and as far as writing hes written some fantastic movies like Titan A.E. and Toy Story.
his comic and TV resume does not need defence

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, I know he has a huge fandom but AVENGERS is not his area, let him do xmen films. Idc if you are Whedonite or not, Just because he's on the list doesn't mean he will be picked. I seen serenity and I was really underwhelmed by it. I just didnt get it, if your gonna do a western, then do a western, space cowboys are really really hard to pull off these days. Give me JJ Abrams over anyone else. ANYONE BUT MICHAEL BAY or josh whedon. If Peter did it the Avengers would be a 3 hour film*thinks about that*....then again......it...would be....the...super...hero....epic....of the DECADE!!!!!

If I had to vote, I would for J.J. Abrams as the man with the plan for The Avengers. Letterier has the enthusiasm that would be necessary for it. Joss Whedon is pretty awesome IMO, but he's not a PERFECT choice for this film. As far as Guillermo Del Toro is concerned. . . PLEASE. You should try checking out this dude's schedule: The Hobbit, The Hobbit 2, Deadman, Hellboy 3. . . he's gonna be a busy [frick]in dude. . .
StuckInPanels
StuckInPanels - 4/2/2010, 8:18 PM
@rfa, just because he directed one film doesn't make him the likeliest choice. If they pick him then Marvel is being biased by hiring someone who worked for them to direct the studios make or break epic. They aren't gonna mess this up, they don't want to, they will give us more of a list hopefully around comic-con. I think Abrams would be able to pull it off or Jackson, cuz he's not busy until TINTIN.

AVENGERS IS EPIC, GET SOMEONE WHO CAN DO EPIC.THESE ARE HEROES THAT ARE POWERFUL ON THEYRE OWN AND SOMETHING BIGGER THAN THEY CAN HANDLE CALLS FOR THEM TO JOIN FORCES..IT HAS TO BE EPIC OR FORGET ABOUT IT.
realfirstavenger
realfirstavenger - 4/2/2010, 8:29 PM
@BlackAirs
Im not saying that since he directed one film hes the likeliest. Im saying that his ability to create amazing works of cinema such as his work on Buffy, Angel, Firefly, and Serenity where he filled the roles of writer, producer and director for much of the series (and the episodes he directed were always the best and he almost always handled the season premieres and finales) makes him a VIABLE candidate.
The Avengers is a HUGE undertaking and Im not sitting here rallying for him to direct. But what I am saying is that he could make an excellent film and his previous work shows that

and as for all the Abrams love, does everyone realize that he works almost entirely within originality. His version of Star Trek, while spectacular, is his version. I would be wary of his directing the Aveners.

and most of the directors your all mentioning like Del Toro (my #1, all-time favorite director) and Jackson are never going to be able to work on this films for the release dates already set. Theres just no way they would be able to do it.

@ realfirstavenger:
I never said he had made Movie(s). I said I was not happy with his film stuff. Thought Serenity was really, really, really cheese. Some of it was tense at times, I'll give it that but, the movie had the stupidest philosphy, "I don't care what you believe, just believe..." - that just rings of not well thought out, simplistic ideology. His Buffy stuff was good and so was Firefly...to a point. Good for TV. I just don't think his brain is wired for Epic Series. Rather, more like TV SERIES.
