BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES To Continue As New Audio Drama With Original Voice Cast

We don't have too much to go on, but Kevin Conroy (Batman) and John Glover (The Riddler) have revealed that the classic '90s Batman: The Animated Series will continue in the form of a new audio drama.

Earlier this year, a rumor that Warner Bros. was developing a follow-up to the '90s Batman: The Animated Series for HBO Max did the rounds, and while that doesn't appear to be the case, we do have confirmation that the iconic show will continue - though probably not in the form most fans had been hoping for.

During a History of the Batman panel at Los Angeles Comic-Con, voice actors Kevin Conroy (Bruce Wayne/Batman) and John Glover (The Riddler) revealed that the series will return as audio drama with the original cast set to reprise their roles.

“It’s a great script by Alan Burnett, and it brings back the original cast,” said Conroy, before Glover added that “The Riddler’s back, and he’s evolved in many ways … He understands he’s on the spectrum.” The pair also confirmed that original composer Danny Elfman will write a new theme.

It's a shame this terrific show won't continue in animated form, but this is the next best thing, and with the original cast returning it's certain to be worth a listen.

Batman: The Animated Series ran for three seasons between 1992 and 1995, and is still widely viewed as one of, if not the best comic book animated shows of all time.

Hmh. Will it adapt the Adventure Continues comics or is this going to be an original story?

Burnett and not Timm or Dini? That's interesting. Burnett is underrated in the DCAU so I'm in.

That’s cool, but like audio dramas are for a very niche group of people.

As a dad to a kid on the spectrum, more representation, especially when it’s not forced, isn’t a bad thing and stuff like this matters in the same vein as characters like Kamala Khan and Miles Morales. Yeah, maybe I’m not totally happy with the idea of a villain being on the spectrum - and the implications that could bring - but it remains to be seen what they do with it.

Maybe Glover shouldn’t have worded it the way he did, but I think he’s coming from an understanding of the character and how his obsession and eccentricities share traits commonly seen with those on the spectrum (perhaps he has a family member on the spectrum and speaks from experience).

They can make it work if they treat it with respect and weave it into the Riddler’s characterization, instead of demonizing it and saying it’s the cause for his villainy. I’ll wait with cautious optimism.

@kg8817 - hopefully they handle it well, as far as I know DC has only tried one other time and it was horrible

At one point Black Manta was autistic, possibly grew up in Arkham, was cured of his autism by Aquaman and became good for a while

I wonder who’s voicing Batman in the Batman Caped Crusader. Doesn’t seem like it’s Conroy.

BTAS actually getting animated is kinda key. It’s the #1 animated show, and as amazing as getting Kevin and co back to voice the characters, I don’t understand how HBO can pass up something that can’t cost nearly as much as live action set pieces for trash shows like Peace Maker, and not animate the shit out of this show while the nostalgia is still strong with the fan base. Just another example in a long long list of obvious mistakes made as it relates to DC’s intellectual property.

I’ll still listen to it, but would prefer to watch it.

@MuadDib -
There's already an animated spiritual successor to it from Bruce Timm, Matt Reeves, and JJ Abrams in development titled Batman: Caped Crusader and a comic book sequel from Paul Dini and Alan Burnette titled Batman: The Adventures Continue. This is just salad dressing.

But aren’t The New Batman Adventures, Superman TAS, Justice League/Justice League Unlimited, and Batman Beyond continuations of Batman TAS already? Is this an off-shoot/mid-quel to it?
