Once again, rumors about Ben Affleck leaving the role of Batman are resurfacing. With Affleck not willing to fully commit to the role, we’ve reached the point where having s different actor take the job is in everyone’s best interests.

Affleck’s career as Batman didn’t exactly start out well, with fans crying out in anger and confusion about Zack Snyder’s choice for the Caped Crusader. Since then, there have been many ups and downs for Affleck in the cape and cowl.

While his performance in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was generally well received, the praise didn’t really have legs since the movie itself was critically panned. Given Affleck’s stellar record as a filmmaker, there was lots of excitement about what Affleck might do with the solo Batman film he was set to direct. However, after months of rumors, Affleck was eventually replaced as director by Matt Reeves but said he would remain as the star.

Since then, rumors about Affleck dropping out as Batman have continued to resurface seemingly every few weeks. This has left DC’s most popular character in limbo. While the initial plan for the next phase of the DCEU seemed to center around the Bat Family, the recent behind the scenes changes with Batgirl and Nightwing mean that this cinematic universe might be moving in a different direction.

With so much uncertainty surrounding both the actor playing Batman and what role Batman is going to play in the future of DC films, now might be the time to shake things up. It’s clear that Affleck is not as enthusiastic about playing the Dark Knight as he once was, and the underwhelming reception for both of the DC films he has starred in appears to be taking a toll.

While Live By Night wasn’t very good, Affleck is still a very well-respected director, and probably doesn’t need to stick around a film franchise that he has seemingly lost all enthusiasm for. Since there are a number of actors in Hollywood who would love the chance to play a character as iconic as Batman, it’s worth giving someone else a shot if Affleck’s heart isn’t in it anymore.

Recasting the role also opens up some interesting new possibilities. Maybe a character other than Bruce Wayne could take on the Mantle of the Bat? Even if this isn’t the case, recasting Bruce Wayne gives Warner Bros. a chance to go a bit younger, ensuring that we get several films with this new Batman.

Affleck managed to prove he could capably play Batman, a feat that many fans doubted he could pull off. While stepping down from the role after only a few years would be a bit underwhelming, Batman fans deserve some certainty after over a year of rumors and speculation.

Cancel the whole project, focus on other parts of the DC Universe.

"Matt Reeves (Cloverfield, War for the Planet of the Apes) is attached to produce.

“Life Sentence follows a criminal who decides to enroll in a futuristic program that erases his memories rather than go to jail, forcing him to reconcile his past actions and relationships.”

He should just leave already. He could've been great if the DCEU wasn't a mess but damn this version of it is just not what it could've been/ what its supposed be.

I love him as Batman. He's the most comic accurate portrayal yet, and I'm excited to watch an actor age in the role. It makes it possible to see stories like Dark Knight Returns and Batman Beyond.

@rabid - If Batman Beyond is on the menu, then just go with the good old Batman.

@rabid - Well since Batman v Superman was a hodge-podge of Dark Knight Returns and Death of Superman, a DCEU Dark Knight Returns would be as repetitive as doing a DCEU Death of Superman.

@ELAYEM - There's plenty left to mine there. It had two sequels, another on the way, and a prequel. I'd love to eventually see the death of Joker and the rise of Robin as the new one.

@rabid - I thought you meant the story Dark Knight Returns, not the Dark Knight parallel universe Frank Miller created.

Just personally, I thought Dark Knight Returns and Batman: Year One were the only good stories in that universe, All Star Batman and Robin, The Dark Knight Strikes Again, and DKIII were all mediocre in my opinion.

@Spock0Clock - That guy? The MIDGET? Ya know he's only 5'8".

@rabid - That's not him. That's the actor's direction. Quite frankly, it was cookie cutter at best. He was average at the very best.

@Spock0Clock - Again, Keaton is a 5'8" midget. LOL..No way...not again.

I'm really sick of reading stuff like this. Affleck is a fantastic Batman, we should all be praying he stays with the role, especially with other great filmmakers like Reeves. Everyone trying to push him out does not have the best interest of this cinematic universe in mind.

Affleck was by far the best part of BvS and I would have wanted him to continue being Batman for a long while after that performance. But in Justice League it was painfully obvious that he is so done with the role. I'm specifically talking about the reshoot scenes because he still seemed to care in the Snyder shot parts.

I still want him to stay. Even though my enthusiasm for the DCEU dropped after Justice League ended up being so mediocre, I still think it can be redeemed, and he's one of the bright spots. I think one of the reasons he works too is that we get just the right amount of him i.e. he hasn't had a solo film and I don't think he needs one, this Batman works well as a prominent supporting character in other movies.
