A recent lawsuit claiming Warner Bros. plagiarised The Batman includes a declaration from filmmaker Matt Reeves in which he provides some fascinating insights into the making of the 2022 blockbuster...

Earlier this week, a judge ruled that Warner Bros. did not steal the plot for The Batman from a writer who came up with a story about the Dark Knight three decades earlier.

U.S. District Judge Paul Engelmayer decided that writer Christopher Wozniak actually infringed DC Comics' copyrights after they employed him as a freelance artist in 1990 when he wrote "The Ultimate Riddle," later retitled "The Blind Man's Hat."

Wozniak has claimed The Batman was a copy of his story but Engelmayer says it's "The Blind Man's Hat" which intentionally and without consent lifted material from the DC Universe and is "rife" with Batman characters and plot elements.

The court documents have now been made public and they include a declaration from The Batman director Matt Reeves.

It's revealed that the filmmaker was first approached in January 2017 about directing a version of the movie starring Ben Affleck. "Warner Bros. sent me a pre-existing screenplay written by a writer named Chris Terrio and the writer and director Ben Affleck," Reeves says. "Upon reading it, I determined that the story and resulting film was not a project that I felt I wanted to do."

He adds that, "[If Warner Bros.] wanted to use this pre-existing script, it should use another director. I also told them an idea I had for an original Batman story that I conceived: a Batman detective story where solving the case led to discovering something unexpectedly personal for Batman. Warner Bros. liked the idea and hired me to make The Batman."

Reeves then reveals, "I did not use any material from the previous script written by Chris Terrio or any other material provided by Warner Bros. other than the Batman characters and universe."

Elsewhere in the declaration, The Batman helmer addresses the notes he received from the studio and how that impacted which gadgets he did and didn't use in the story.

It's interesting to get these insights into the making of the 2022 blockbuster and surprising to hear that Terrio and Affleck's version of The Batman is one Reeves had absolutely no interest in making. That was expected to revolve around the Caped Crusader battling Deathstroke after the assassin learned the hero's secret identity.

Affleck later walked away from the role of Batman but ended up returning to the DCEU to shoot cameos in The Flash and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

Missing out of Affleck’s The Batman will be one of the biggest bummers IMO. You can thank stupid ass WB/Joss Whedon for making the Justice League filming so insufferable that it turned him off completely (and reignited his alcoholism). Big sigh.

Reeve’s The Batman was pretty great though!

@TheLobster - I think that's nonsense. I think Affleck's thing isn't on Whedon, unless he forced Affleck to drink against his will. Affleck is his own man.

TheLobster - 3/29/2024, 4:22 PM
@ObserverIO - nope. Reeves looked at the script and decided it wasn’t the film he wanted to make and WB allowed him to do just that when they could have gotten someone who would have made that film. However, the only person who should direct that film is literally Affleck himself.

Why didn’t he? Cause WB burned the [frick] out of him so yeah - blame WB and Whedon for a toxic environment which led to his eventual departure altogether.
TheLobster
TheLobster - 3/29/2024, 4:28 PM
@dagenspear - that’s pretty reductive dawggy. If you’re working on a mega toxic set, saying rewritten lines that you hate, and you’re being forced to film a movie TWICE on top of that? You would hate coming to work. It’s been well documented how much a dipshit Whedon was on set and his film ended up being WAYYYYYYY worse than what Snyder would have/did eventually deliver. Even Affleck mentioned that he likes Zack’s JL film and made comments throwing light shade to Whedon’s film. He even staged a walk out on Whedon’s set because things go so bad.

So yeah: if you struggle with alcoholism - it’s totally understandable how you could be driven to that point if you hate the set you’re being forced to stay on.

ObserverIO

@TheLobster - Affleck and Terrio wrote the script. Reeves threw the script out. Affleck left the project. Ergo, it's Reeves fault. Not Whedon's. You can't blame Whedon for everything. He wasn't even solely to blame for the toxic environment on set. He was just doing his job and trying to get his cast to do theirs. If they were to take his direction instead of refusing to out of loyalty to Snyder, the set would have been way less toxic.

He was quoted as saying he's never worked with people as rude as them in his entire life.

A cast that included a drunk Affleck, Ray Fisher and Ezra Miller.

Plenty of blame to go around there.

@TheLobster - I didn't say Whedon had no hand in the situation, but I'd also say it's pretty ignoring of humanity to not say that Affleck made his own choices in his own life.

My mom hates going to work. She's older than Affleck and gets less money. He has no excuses.

@Matchesz - completely agree. It also looks like it’s a made for TV film lol

@ObserverIO - Affleck’s heart wasn’t in it anymore and that’s solely because of JL and what both the studio and Whedon did. He’s very much stated just that in the past. I personally believe he pretended to stay on as Batman at the request of WB til they got far enough along with Reeves’ film.

I also am not going to believe a POS like Whedon (where there’s smoke - there’s fire - and they’re plenty of smoke with that hack) when he says they were some of the rudest people. What else do you expect him to say? lol

Also nothing wrong with Ray Fisher and I don’t think Affleck was literally showing up drunk to set either. Affleck was quoted saying that Joss came in saying “I have all the answers - I’m going to turn this ship around..” but he didn’t. Meaning Joss was acting super arrogant while giving shit direction. That’s just insufferable.

ZSJL might not be a perfect film but it shits all over Josstice League and despite most of this site hating Snyder - anyone who’s worked with him has sung his praises. Can’t say the same about Whedon.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 3/30/2024, 5:14 AM
@TheLobster - The whole where there's smoke there's fire works for the rest of the cast as well. Especially people like Ezra Miller.

And I think Whedon earned the right to come in saying he knew how to fix it after The Avengers. At the time it was the third highest grossing movie of all time. And he did fix a lot of things. He fixed Superman. Also, it's a matter of taste saying that you prefer ZSJL, I personally think they're both trash, but ZSJL fixed some things that were wrong with Josstice League and Josstice League obviously fixed a lot of things that were wrong with ZSJL.

As far as Affleck goes, we just saw him as Batman last year. He even did an Aquaman after credits scene that James Gunn asked them to remove. He was on board with The Batman. He was going to actually do it. But then he left because it was no longer his vision.

Also most people that have worked with Whedon actually do sing his praises. Just not the Justice League or Cordelia from Buffy. The Justice League was a unique situation. It was a Zack Snyder film and when Zack Snyder makes a film, his cast and crew are his soldiers going into battle with him, his comrades, so when the director of The Avengers shows up and says "Zack's gone and I'm going to fix his mess" how do you think they're going to react?

If it had been a Joss Whedon Avengers film that Zack Snyder had taken over, the reaction would have been the same. Except Marvel don't [frick] around, the cast would have been threatened by the producers to do as they're told. It shouldn't have been up to Whedon to threaten Gadot, Hamada should have done it. But he's a people pleaser, so Whedon was left powerless and was reprimanded for threatening to fire people.

@TheLobster - no, stop being stoopid.

JUSTICE LEAGUE, which WAS zack snyder's baby was not the reason Ben stepped away from Batman...well, maybe partly.

and STOP blaming whedon for EVERYTHING.

do some GOOGLE...ben's got lots of PERSONAL issues at the time..which drove him BACK to alcohol...thus, him not looking exactly the part in those Whedon's reshoots.

@TheLobster - “ ZSJL might not be a perfect film but it shits all over Josstice League and despite most of this site hating Snyder - anyone who’s worked with him has sung his praises. Can’t say the same about Whedon.”

Just because someone is good to work with doesn’t mean what they make is good and vice versa.

Both JL and ZSJL sucked, but I’ll watch “Whedon’s Justice League” any day over sitting through that masturbatory pile of shit Snyder put out.
TheLobster
TheLobster - 3/30/2024, 1:08 PM
@CloakDagger - what are you talking about? The Justice League that was originally released was not Snyder’s baby. It was radically different and everyone who worked on the film reportedly hated it and it showed.

Joss Whedon is a [frick]ing hack - stop defending him.

Sorry - I meant STOP defending him because it’s making you look STOOPID

lol
TheLobster
TheLobster - 3/30/2024, 1:12 PM
@philinterrupted - I know opinions are subjective and all but if you sincerely think Josstice League is the better film then I have nothing to debate with you over.

Also; I was talking about Joss being a POS and being difficult to work with vs Snyder who’s praised by all the cast members he works with. Joss also sucks as a director too though - not just as a human being.

Man of Steel > 2012’s The Avengers

philinterrupted
philinterrupted - 3/30/2024, 1:25 PM
@TheLobster - those movies are completely different tones and styles. Not comparable in any sense other than they’re comic book movies.
I like Man of Steel a lot but I think Avengers is the better movie.

I would never expect to change a ZSJL fans opinion. But I’d watch JL because it’s 2 hours shorter and the end result isn’t really that much different.

Th3Batman
Th3Batman - 3/29/2024, 3:30 PM
@regularmovieguy - Even more ideal would've been removing Snyder following the release of Man of Steel. A Batman movie directed by Affleck, and a Superman sequel directed by someone other than Snyder would've put the DC brand in a far better place than it's currently in.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 3/29/2024, 3:40 PM

Wait , so was he never attached to the DCEU version…

If so then that means the report from the trades were wrong before this since they made it seem like that version became “The Batman” that we saw or am i wrong?.

Anyway , the Affleck’s version with Deathstroke could have been fun but I liked the one we ultimately got a lot so I’m cool with it.
