THE BATMAN Loses Its #1 Spot To THE LOST CITY As North American Box Office Continues Post-COVID Recovery

The Batman enjoyed three weeks at #1, but The Lost City dethroned it this weekend to take the top spot at the North American box office. With an impressive $31 million haul, the action comedy managed to draw in a largely female audience, and a 76% score on Rotten Tomatoes seems to have increased interest.

During its fourth weekend of release, the World's Greatest Detective's latest movie netted an estimated $18.7 million, taking its current domestic total to an impressive $330 million.

Of course, perhaps the biggest winner was Spider-Man: No Way Home. As we reported last night, the Sony Pictures/Marvel Studios blockbuster remains in the Top 10 and has now passed the $800 million mark. April looks set to be a busy month as Morbius, Sonic the HedgehogFantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, and more are all on the way.

It's definitely beginning to feel like the box office is bouncing back after suffering through the "pandemic era," and these numbers are a little cloer to what we're used to seeing at this time of year.

Here's this weekend's top 10 courtesy of Deadline:

1. The Lost City ($31 million)
2. The Batman ($18.7 million)
3. RRR ($9.5 million)
4. Uncharted ($4.6 million)
5. Jujutsu Kaisen 0 ($4.58 million)
6. X ($2.2 million)
7. Dog ($2.1 million)
8. Spider-Man: No Way Home ($1.85 million)
9. Sing 2 ($1.28 million)
10. Infinite Storm ($751,200)

I'm out of the loop because I've only heard of 4 of those movies, and that doesn't include The Lost City.

@Origame - I've since looked up the trailer. Still had never seen or heard anything about it. Honestly, not something that seems like I'd go out of my way to watch. Still leaves 5 I know nothing about.

@inkniron - I get that. But in fairness we need more than just two movies doing good at the box office, so regardless this is good news.

@inkniron - Small budget movies can't afford the multi-millions spent on P & A for wide releases like The Batman or for that matter, The Lost City. So not hearing of them isn't all that unusual.

@inkniron - I only knew about the last city because of the trailer when I saw the Batman. It certainly has got a good cast.

The Lost City looks fun but that looks like something I can stream. The B.O. is going to be interesting next month with all these high profile movies coming out.

I’m expecting Doctor Strange to open very high when it comes out in May. It will open higher than The Batman but I’m not sure if will top No Way Home’s $260M opening. I think $210-230 M is where it will open.

@BritishMonkey - Yes. The worst is yet to come, and that’s largely thanks to everyone speaking about it in the past tense. It doesn’t end because we’re fed up with it. It will never end if we keep dropping protocols the second infection rates begin to decline slightly.

This looks fun af! Channing seems to be coming back to acting in a big way with this and Dog the past few months.

Always have been a fan of his and his really good comedic timing. Might not be able to go theaters for this, but can't wait for it to be on VOD.
