The Penguin Rumored To Be The Main Villain In Either THE BATMAN Or BIRDS OF PREY

While Matt Reeves' The Batman may still be a few years out, it appears as though we may have just gotten our first beat on the potential main villain of the film, and he's definitely a familiar face.

With the entire DC Films slate currently in a state of flux, it seems that Warner Bros. is doubling down on the one superhero that's almost always worked for them in the past: Batman.

The studio is currently in various stages of development on several DC projects either centered on the Caped Crusader himself (The Batman) or about characters in the greater Batman universe (Birds of Prey; Batgirl; Suicide Squad 2The Joker & Harley Quinn; Nightwing; Deathstroke). While it remains to be seen if/when any of these aforementioned projects will begin production, rumors about each have been circulating for several months, if not years now.

The latest buzz comes to us from the always-reliable Justin Kroll, of Variety, who shared that his sources have indicated to him that the Penguin may be the primary antagonist in Matt Reeves' The Batman. He adds that if Reeves, who is still in the midst of penning the script, opts to go in a different direction, then the villain may be used as the lead opposition in Cathy Yan's Birds of Prey, which will also return Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn.

Regardless, based on his comments, it does seem that both The Batman and Birds of Prey are still quite a while away, with both most likely not commencing production until sometime next year, which means they won't be debuting in theaters until 2020 at the earliest.

Suicide Squad 2 is expected to begin filming shortly after Birds of Prey wraps, so there is a small possibility that WB could release three DC films in 2020 - maybe four if The Flash solo feature also meets its production start date. In the meantime, however, James Wan's Aquaman is due out this December, David F. Sandberg's Shazam! is out in April 2019, and Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman 2 just recently began filming.

I think Paul Giamatti would do a great job as Penguin.

@KWilly - I love Giamatti. He's amazing in Billions. Such a waste of his talent in TASM2.

@LEVITIKUZ - He took a meeting with Geoff Johns and co. back in June 0f 2017 at DC's office. People were speculating it was for the role of the Penguin based on some of his past tweets and the fact that he's holding a comic that romintely features the Penguin in the photo he took with Johns.

Cool, use him for Birds of Prey. Also dont include Harley Quinn, she is not a bird of prey, she is a Gotham City Siren, wait for that movie, both teams are very different,
Birds Of Prey: Batgirl, Huntress and Black Canary
Gotham City Sirens: Catwoman, Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn

@dracula - She can be an antagonist or someone who wants to join, but doesn't work out. Otherwise, she shouldn't be in the film.

@dracula - I wouldn’t hate a bit of crossover with Sirens like a Harley cameo of something like that but yeah no I’m with you she shouldn’t be a part of the team

Harvey's currently a fugitive, so it would make sense that the Birds are after her.

@dracula - Gods, what an awesome crossover catfight that'd make: BOP V. GCS. Now that's a movie I'd pay to see! (Unless Snyder directs it. Obviously)

I’d rather see him in Birds of Prey tbh. Obvious bird pun inducing reasons aside I’d rather we see a newer villain or story in the main Batman series than someone we’ve got before unless that are going to be a side character. Deathstroke, Court of Owls, Hugo Strange, Mad Hatter, Black Mask, Red Hood, Hell even Man-bag is like to see as a first lieutenant of another character. There’s so many characters to pull from in the Bat mythos that there’s no reason to fall into the Superman trap of using Zod and Lex over and over again. If we are gonna redo villains I’d rather see it in a spin-off bc there’s be a different hero villain dynamic bc it’s not them and Batman and that could lead to something new. Let’s not redo the same 3 characters for someone who arguably has the best rogues gallery in all of comics
