5 Reasons Why the Dark Knight Rises can surpass The Dark Knight

Since its release in 2008, The Dark Knight has been called many things- one of the best sequels of all time, one of the best modern crime dramas, a real leap for the comic book movie genre etc. With this much cache behind it and Rises soon hitting cinemas everywhere. A question looms over many movie goers’ minds as well as fans of this franchise. Can this really surpass the Dark Knight, a movie which set the bar so high? Well in this writer`s opinion I think that it indeed can and here are five reasons as to why.

1) Focus on Bruce Wayne- One of the common criticisms of the Dark Knight was that it did not focus on Bruce Wayne enough and that Batman was such a non entity. It is because of this that many if not all prefer Begins to its sequel. I partially agree with this, I saw Batman has the inciter of many things in Dark Knight if not the lead protagonist but I would argue the movie was mostly about the triad of Gordon, Dent and Wayne. With Rises, I do get the feeling that despite the introduction of new characters such as Selina Kylie, Miranda Tate and Bane- that there will be a huge focus on Bruce. I get the feeling that his character arc will encompass of a lot of ideas such as who he is without Batman, his hard edged determination as well as the bigger implications of his heroism and him being a symbol and what that ultimately means for Gotham. In addition, I can see Bruce being challenged here in a way he has never been before and this brings us to my next point.

2) Bane- One of the most acclaimed things about The Dark Knight was Heath Ledger`s performance as The Joker as well as his character and how he existed in Nolan`s Gotham. I am among those who agreed with this assessment. Despite this, I do think that Bane can be an equally good villain as Mr J if not better and here is why. Firstly if Nolan can do such an original and great take on a 70+ year old character such as The Joker then think of the possibilities he can do with a character that has been hardly utilised but yet is so young such as Bane. Secondly, I am really liking Nolan`s take on him thus far, from the visual point of view he looks absolutely terrifying and also he looks almost like a renegade who left the Red army and just from seeing the Prologue he commands an amazing presence and air of mystery to him. In addition Tom Hardy is a great actor and I think his performance despite the hindrance of a mask will be spectacular. My only worry is the Nolan brothers making him too one dimensional. I really hope they were reading some of the early Bane stuff as he has a great origin and an interesting dynamic with Batman, shown most clearly in the Vengeance of Bane one shot issues, particularly the second one.

3) Catwoman and female characters- I feel with this next point that Nolan may be answering his critics. Despite loving The Dark Knight, I feel that Rachel Dawes despite being well acted came across more as a symbol or ideal then a proper full fleshed out character, she represented an ideal life for Bruce Wayne and part of the reason why Harvey Dent fell from grace. With Rises, I am really looking forward to seeing Nolan tackle Catwoman. She is a character I have always thought would work in this universe whether as a response to Batman or working on her own to survive. In addition she is one of the most important characters in the mythos, she represents one of the ultimate temptations for Batman/Bruce Wayne and their chemistry together is always really fun to read, something I hope gets translated to screen come July 20th. This brings me into a larger point, with Marion Cotollard also being added to the cast, I think Rises will fix one of the major problems of the series thus far and that is the lack of female characters, between Hathaway and Cotollard I really reckon it’s not only the boys who will be stealing the show this time.

4) Nolan`s Direction- Upon hearing that Rises was announced, one of my major worries about the film in general was the direction that this was going to take. Many questions arose in my mind, the scale of The Dark Knight compared to that of Begins was massive, it was an all encompassing Crime Drama and thriller. How is Nolan really going to top that? Well my fears over this issue have all but nearly ceased in the recent months. While Nolan compared The Dark Knight to great crime dramas in particular his primarily influence being Micheal Mann`s Heat. With Rises he is comparing it to not only great Hollywood epics of old but also silent movies as well as other things that this small quote from him demonstrates- “It`s all about historical epics, in conception, It`s a war film. It`s a revolutionary epic”-This combined with over an hour of the movie being shot in IMAX, really makes me confident about Nolan`s direction in regards to the end of his take on Batman.

5) The Score- A Singular Vision Fulfilled?- One of the most unique things in the franchise thus far has been in its score. Batman Begins if you were judging from the score alone came across as something out of a horror movie punctuated with some poignant themes and rousing action music. With The Dark Knight this was elevated with the Joker theme that was composed by Hans Zimmer that fused so well with the soft touch from James Newton Howard most clearly seen in the theme he composed for Harvey Dent. Despite not really liking the absence of Newton Howard, I do feel in the long run it will actually make this movie better. Despite doing some great stuff on the score as I just briefly remarked on. I feel the score for the first two movies have been primarily Hans Zimmer`s brain child and from just listening to full score recently for Rises, I can tell he has wrapped up a lot of themes he has set up and I look forward to this partially singular vision regarding the score being fulfilled when I see Rises opening day.

Thank you for your comments thus far, you made some great points Fangz. Firstly to answer your question about IMAX. I should have spoken about this more in the article but I thought Nolan used IMAX really well in The Dark Knight, it made the movie feel really immersive and because of this really brought home one of the primary themes of the movie which was symbols and what they mean to Gotham and the city itself became a character within the movie. With Rises, I think the use of IMAX will be really good as to add to the epic scale that Nolan is positing for this movie- very clear if you read interviews with him.

While you make a good point about the fact that if Bane is one-dimensal then Nolan can make it work- I guess its just my desire for Nolan to do something interesting with him and fully flesh him out on film because in the comics he has been hardly used but imo if used correctly he can be one of Batman`s best villains if not his best.

As for where I sit on the debate between Begins and TDK, I like the latter more for this reason. One of the most unique things about Batman as a comic book character is that as well as being a timeless character, he himself lends himself to many great genres and The Dark Knight was a rife of the more serious gritty comics such as Batman Year One, Long Halloween, Killing Joke etc. So the argument that what Nolan is doing with Batman is too serious or stripping away his comic book essence because firstly of what I just said and secondly I see the Nolan Batverse as a heightened reality, I believe you can fit most of his rogue`s gallery in the films with a bit of tweaking.

This is not one of my most anticipated movies of the year. Nolan just didn't due the characters as i thought he would. Maybe if Nolan made a completely new character seven years ago, and all these movies existed, then I would like his movies more than I do now. The problem is that Nolan used Batman as the source material, and till this day, it just irritates me that Nolan changed so much to the character that Batman in his movies are unrecognizable at times. Nolan should have never used the Batman name. When I watch this movie, I am only watching it because it is something to do this summer, and also, just to see how well Selena Kyle is portrayed.

I think my biggest concern is that Catwoman won't have her own intelligence. As in, because she's working with or for Bane at first, she will be an expert on his transgressions and therefore a valuable asset to Bruce/Batman. If you took Bane away, would she still stand up as a good anti-villain?

The only people that have not liked this movie are the fan boys who wished it could of been something else. The general public thinks this will be bad@$$. It's that simple. Why do you think Transformers and Avengers made so much? Answer=The general public(which outnumbers fanboy haters) like these Batman movies.

@thelovedoc

I wish more people on this site knew that. The haters here are so ignorant, not giving the movie a chance, why? 'Cuz its not true to the comics!' Haters need to realize that the traditional comic look of Bane would have not been taken seriously. Some people just need to leave their basements and get some fresh air

Eh, the "haters" are still going to be getting to the theater early to get tickets. You can't be a CBM fan and miss a Batman movie.

I agree with BattlinMurdock. "Batman" is selling TDKR to the general public more than any of the 5 points you mentioned.

1) Focus on Bruce Wayne- I think there was enough of that in Batman Begins, and I wasn't aware there would be more focus until I read this editorial. I can't imagine anyone outside this website and ones like it have put that much thought into the matter. I do believe to focus more on Bruce or Bats will be an improvement over TDK, which was really the Joker/Dent movie. But I am a card carrying nerd.

2) Bane- That might excite some people in the know (or not, like myself), but most people who have never picked up a comic or watched cartoons and have only experienced Bats on the '60's TV show or on film will have no clue about him.

3) Catwoman and female characters- Catwoman is recognazable to the non-geek community, and is like the Joker of this movie as far as famous Bat Rogues. She is the third strongest selling point on this movie after Batman himself, and the fact it is being touted as the end of a trilogy.

4) Nolan`s Direction- I do not think the average person will be as interested in the direction Nolan is going, just that he is the one doing the steering again (if they are even aware of that. Who directed Highlander? I don't know, but I freaking loved and love that movie).

5) The Score- I have never in my 40 + years heard anyone comment on a score except Halloween's (John Carpenter's), and freaking Danny Elfman. I don't think Joe or Jill Q. Public are aware who Hans Zimmer even is (I wasn't until reading about him on this site earlier this year), or care about a movie score as long as it isn't distracting.

So, in closing, here are the 5 points I feel could elevate TDKR above TDK, assuming Joe and Jill Q. Public will only see the trailers and TV spots and not read many interviews and articles outside of reviews:

1- Batman
2- End of a trilogy
3- Catwoman
4- Bale, Freeman, Oldman, and Caine. Maybe Hathoway.
5- Nolan

@ Scarecrow

This is a very well written article, so I'll be nice, but...

"It is because of this that many if not all prefer Begins to its sequel"

Say what?????? Don't get me wrong, I like Begins more than TDK, but MOST people liked TDK better. Its not even a competition

Has nobody mentioned the fact that the name 'Nolan" is becoming as well know as any actor in his movies. The man just received a star on the hollywood walk of fame, only a feet that 8 directors before him was able to accomplish. Really!!! Anyone, Chris Nolan is as well know as Christian Bale, a actor who has won a Oscar. I sit next to a gut at work, who dosn't know anyone of these people but is going to see the TDKR becuause he saw the trailer before TASM and thought badass!! That's all it takes to sell a movie today, so haters hate if your going to hate about source material, and not being a Batman movie, becuase the rest of us are just to going to see a epic movie done by a great film maker.

I don't get why people keep writing these types of editorials.
Really ? "focus on Bruce Wayne". Last time I checked the movie was still called Batman.
And the story and the action will make the movie good so I don't really get that direction thing you're talking about.
And the vast majority of people prefer TDK over BB so that statement is invalid
