In an interview with Philly.com, Co-Creator of Bane Chuck Dixon discusses the creation of the character and his different incarnations in the media, including Wrestler Robert Swenson's performance in Batman and Robin (stating that in that film, the character was an "imbecile"). He also talks about what he thought of actor Tom Hardy's portrayal of the character in The Dark Knight Rises.

"Apparently, Warner Bros. was pressuring Nolan to use the Riddler, which would have been too similar to the Joker," Dixon continued. "Plus, the Riddler, like the Joker and so many of Batman's villains, is no challenge against him in a mano-a-mano fistfight. Batman will wipe the floor with him in that situation.

I am beyond glad that Nolan had the juice in Hollywood to stick to his guns," he added. "From interviews I've seen, it's clear he understands the character and he gets what we were going for. It's not exactly what I created, but he's physically imposing and Tom Hardy is one hell of an actor. I can't imagine Bane being better portrayed."

I still dont know if Bane died. Im guessing he did when Selina blasted him with the batpod.

Worst final battle ever. Even Elektra had a better fight at the end.

"Worst final battle ever?" Have you seen Captain America: The First Avenger? or Iron Man? or Iron Man 2? or Thor? They were no better. Ok before Whiplash arrived Iron Man 2 was pretty good then Whiplash comes and it's over in seconds.

If Joker couldn't stab Bane, then Catwoman should had.

Good for straight up fights with Batman? Yes

Physically imposing? Yes.

One hell of an actor? Okay, but when your face is 75% covered and your voice sounds like it is coming from a megaphone off camera, is that good acting? I don't know about that.

@Vekakingblade: firstly I'm not a DC or a Marvel, read my profile or ask about my DVD collection if you don't believe me. I like both equally because I'm a comic book movie fan as well as comic fan, I even like Elektra, Fantastic Four and Green Lantern. Secondly, as BizarroNumber1 said I was pointing out that those final endings weren't any better. Plus IronDean2099 mentioned Elektra, last time I checked that was Marvel. I'm not trying to start the war because I think it's stupid and pathetic, I was merely pointing out that there are far worse or equally as bad final battles.

We could bring up superman and Kumar kicking his ass or green lantern and that shit storm of and ending. Bane was badass but killing him like that Idk it was extremely anti climactic. I new he had to die but cat women blasting him and saying a cheesy 1 liner was dumb. Bane deserved a better death but it didnt ruin the movie for me I still enjoyed the film.

I don't think Bane died from that blast. Severely injured perhaps, but I don't think he died. Sure the Bat-Pod has enough firepower to it to do that, but Selina had to blast through the wall first in order to get Bane, so IMO, she did both at once, therefore allowing the wall to take most of the heat, but giving Bane enough to send him flying. Anyway, that's just my opinion.

On the topic of it being the "worst final battle ever", it wasn't all I had hoped for or wanted between them, but it was enough for me to be a little satisfied. Could have been more Batman beating Bane though.

wildaniel@ it's hard to show a death like that in a PG-13 movie. same went for dark knight. my money is he is dead. but i see where you're coming from.

Bane was awesome!!

@Bizzaro Did you pay attention to the movie? Did you not listen to the doctor's assessment of bruce's injuries? no cartilage in his knees and elbows, scar tissue on his organs, etc? There's your answer on why he was in such bad shape after eight years, those kind of injuries don't just heal; you can't regrow cartilage, trust me, i know from experience.

Now, with that being said, i think Tom hardy's Bane was very good. Was it an exact copy of the character from the comics? No. But it was a true enough interpretation of the character on film. And anyone who says, "where's the venom?" is a mark to actually think that a movie trilogy based on a realistic interpretation of the characters was going to have venom in it.

MJPETTY7 - 7/24/2012, 12:10 PM
@NinjaJesus Batman & Robin's Bane had only two similarities to the comics. The costume and the VENOM. Nolan's Bane had the comics Bane's criminal mind, the organization, the fighting skills, the fearlessness, and the ruthlessness. Plus, him breaking Batman's back there was straight out of Knightfall.
MJPETTY7
MJPETTY7 - 7/24/2012, 12:11 PM
@Bumble Also, he had gas pumped into his body for the pain. A direct reference to VENOM.

@Petty I'll give you that. I was referring to the people who wanted it to be some body bloating, super steroid. I totall got that refernce to it being a steroid of some sort that allowed him to live and deal with the pain from his injuries.

Bane was brutal, and big. Tom Hardy did better than expected. That showdown in the sewers was one of the best "hero-versus-villain" confrontations on screen. So iconic, very close to Knightfall. He was a powerful presence.

Bane died in a stupid way
I was expecting much more from Nolan..
Every other movies ending was tolerable since the overall product was somewhat mediocre..
But c'mon this is CHRIS NOLAN
He could have gave us a Better battle fight...

it's my opinion that people should sort of change their expectations sometimes when it comes to a final fight scene. for instance in IM2 the "fight" with whiplash should just be looked at as part of the entire climax/fight. i would argue that as soon as the drones starting flying that's when the fight began. the drones were deployed by whiplash. so in my mind he was fighting whiplash that whole time. when he came in at the end that was just icing on the cake. would i have done different? probably. was i happy and satisfied with what i saw? of course!

as for the second fight scene with Batman and Bane. what do you want? MORE punching? after we already had them fight once? again, thats just a small piece of a giant, action-packed climax that included car chases and air battles. and for those saying batman didn't even beat bane, catwoman did. story-wise batman DID beat him. he had him dead to rights. then the twist came in the form of Talia! he was better than bane, he did beat bane. but the patient knife was waiting for him. Banes death scene was more about catwoman's redemption.

instead of saying "this would have been better" ask yourself why the director decided to do what he did. why am i being shown this as part of a visual story? Nolan is a smart guy, if you think he went wrong somewhere that's cool! everyone has their opinion. but i didn't make the batman movie. Nolan did. and any "mistakes" you think were made might have a deeper meaning to them.

I'm sure im going to get fried for "telling people how to watch movies." but thats just my two cents. i loved the final scenes in TDKR.

I don't know why people are confused with BANE's death (or not)!

She blasted a ton of cars away in that tunnel & then BANE!
What makes anyone think he'll be alive!!
It would Atleast have burned all his anisteics etc!

HE DIED! No more argument!

I liked Bane and I don't feel his story was undercut as much as others have suggested by the Talia reveal. Still, I'm very much disappointed that we'll never see the intended third movie in this trilogy because Heath Ledger died. We can't even say that Nolan has it in his head and could tell us about it from what we know of his creative process.

I liked this interpretation of Bane, he was ruthless, brutal, and seemed nearly unstoppable.

Until of course that moment when it turns out he did Talia's bidding, everything that he was built up to be just crumbled into dust, to think I believed he had destroyed the Henchmen Bane from Batman and Robin.

I have to admit, I initially thought the casting was all wrong. Hardy, while pretty yoked, is no where near Bane's size. And Hathaway...what has she done to make me think she could pull off Catwoman? Now, I think Hardy did a great job as Bane. I even enjoyed Hathaway's Catwoman.

What I found interesting was how different they are from their comic book counterparts. It's like my kids say, they're those characters, but not really.

Just my opinion, but it's like Bane and Catwoman, in name only. I don't think anyone even called her Catwoman. And her 'ears' were just her goggles sitting on top of her head. And while they did use some elements of Bane's story in the movie, most of it wasn't.

Nonetheless, still loved it. I'll definitely make room for on my home video shelf.
