Prior to The Batman's release, we all suspected that the Bat-Symbol on this Caped Crusader's chest might be the disassembled gun that killed Bruce Wayne's parents. Later, director Matt Reeves would explain that it's actually a tactical knife, something we saw in action during the movie itself.
Thanks to concept artist Glyn Dillon, we now have a look at over 20 alternate designs for the Bat-Symbol (along with some incredible illustrations that helped Reeves find The Batman's tone).
"The Batman was an odd job, what with Covid hitting after only a few weeks of shooting," the artist recalls. "Matt Reeves was excellent to work with, and Robert Pattinson couldn’t have been better in any way. And Greig Fraser made it all look beautiful. All the hard work that everyone put into it, really shows up on screen. I’m very proud to have been a part of it."
This movie finds Bruce in only the second year of his career fighting crime in Gotham City, so there's every chance the Batsuit - and the symbol on his chest - will evolve as the franchise continues. With days to go before the DC Comics adaptation is made available on HBO Max, there still hasn't been a sequel announcement, which is a surprise when The Batman has earned over $738 million.
