Diane Lane Defends The Infamous 'Martha' Scene From BATMAN V SUPERMAN

The name 'Martha' brought about much derision and discussion for Batman v Superman, and now Martha Kent herself, Diane Lane, has weighed in on the film's controversial twist...

Just as it seemed Batman was about to claim victory over Superman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, the conflict between the two heroes came to a grinding halt with the mention of one name: Martha. In a twist that inspired as much criticism as it did philosophical discussion, the two heroes united over their mothers' shared name. The topic has been hotly debated since the film's release, inspiring countless memes, parodies, and essays.

Diane Lane, who portrayed Martha Kent in the film, has now spoken out in defense of the twist, saying the name allows Bruce to finally see Superman as a human and overcome his feeling of powerlessness. "Superman and Batman certainly entered the superhero business from opposite roads, yet they have similar histories. There's the loss of your original family, so they're both orphans. And I don't think Batman sees Superman as human until he realizes that he has mother. And I think, when Batman makes the decision to rescue Martha, Superman's mother, in a way he's redeeming his own sense of powerlessness he had when he could not save his own mother."

Do you agree with Lane? Sound off below!

@MattBellissimo - But-but-but... we get it... Why does everyone defending this decision assume it's because people just didn't understand it?!

@Spock0Clock - yes, we understand what it means.

The reason we hate it is

-no one calls their mom by their name

-how quickly they forgive each other.

I mean even if they stopped fighting, there should've still been some salt between the two.

@ALostCause - There's not much time for that, as they go to fight the cave troll and then supes is dead. But even during the funeral Bruce's dialog... Forget it, you're right, man.
FelM
FelM - 8/15/2016, 7:40 AM
@ALostCause - Also, it would have been no problem for supes to say "My mother... cough cough", bats would have gone through the same train of thought Diane Lane describes. The Martha factor was pure stupidness.

@FelM - I mean all they needed was for batman to say "we still need to talk" at some point. just to let us know that batman has a little conviction and still wants to protectr humanity from superman.

or yknow, you could just make batman seem like an asshole who forgives people way too easily, because that's batman's character right??? he forgives people constantly...? right?

@FelM @ALostCause - The purpose for saying Martha is clearly bigger that, and it's what a lot of people aren't realizing. When I first saw the movie, I assumed Clark Kent did his homework on both Batman and Bruce Wayne. The Ultimate Cut confirms that. Obviously, whether Kryptonian or not, Batman knows Superman has some form of mother. Saying "they have my mother" wouldn't have made Batman halt in his actions. Now Superman, having done his research, knows saying his mother's name would give reason for Batman to pause. Why would this alien suddenly use the name of my own mother against me? Another key thing here, before the battle begins, Superman refers to Batman as Bruce. It's clear from the very beginning, he was trying to make a personal connection to Batman and stop the fight. Hence, once again, the usage of the name Martha. That's why I never saw the scene as stupid, and why I don't get many others don't understand this. Contrived? Yes. Could have been delivered in a better way? Absolutely. What did ruin the scene for me was Lois running in shouting that's his mom's name. I feel like had that been removed, because it was a really dumb addition to the scene, it might have changed the overall opinion of this scene in general. It's like the thought behind it was "the audience won't get this so let's have an in character moment making the connection for the audience."

Batman then saving Martha, as Lane says here and it's something I've debated with friends for awhile now, is a way to make up not only for his own mother, but the parents he couldn't save during the events of Man Of Steel. The many kids he couldn't prevent from being orphans, hence the importance of the scene where he rescues the girl from the collapsing rubble (field trip kids in the Ultimate Cut.)

@DTor91 - wow... That's a good point!

They could've made it a little more clear, maybe show superman actually confirming the knowledge of batmans parents names.

It would've made it so superman manipulated the bat, which is a nice role reversal and a good way of making it seem like superman won the fight with his brains instead of what we all expected which is he would overpower bats.

If excited better, it really could've been a great moment of superman getting the last finishing move of the fight.

Instead it just seems like Clark is awkwardly yelling his moms name and then the fights over.

@DTor91 - So the whole movie was about Mothers? Because why the need for Batman to also refer to Superman about his parents to think if he was special to later on lead on to Martha.

Batman after so many years supposedly is still hung up about his parents? This version of Batman is should be on his 4th sidekick by now. And should be in depressed mode ala Death in the Family.

@ALostCause - If you were trying to get someone to save your mom, wouldn't you be descriptive as possible? Hoping that after he snuffs you e could look for her? Besides "save my Mommy" just would sound silly........Just saying.
BloodyBed
BloodyBed - 8/15/2016, 7:20 PM
@stormcr0w - why would you help the dude you just killed, if you just killed him.

supermans goal had to be to stop the fight and to talk. he was about to die, he would've just said "my mom"

but as ^^ said, he could've known bruse would react that way, thus he says Martha to trick bruce in a way.

no matter what though it's a dumb thing to add to the script without proper explanation. but the deceptive superman bit sure sounds better.

@ALostCause - "If excuted better, it really could've been a great moment of superman getting the last finishing move of the fight."

This sentence applies to the whole damn movie. On paper, all of the plot points, ideas, concepts, arcs, etc. in this movie are SPOT ON, but they just weren't executed right.

I love BvS, but I wish it was better so the majority of it's viewers felt the same as me.

@DTor91 - "The purpose for saying Martha is clearly bigger that, ...."

Except that Batman already knows Superman's identity and thus would already know his mother's name. He never once talks to Alfred or himself about Superman's alter ego, where he lives, or who his friends are. He never mentions the fact that Lois is Superman's girlfriend and thus she's a person of interest. He never questions the thud heard, when Lex hits Clark's chest at the party. This is Batman. HE WOULD NOTICE. And he never contemplates the fact that Superman was the same reporter he got into a spat with at the party. Anyone else would say, "Wait a minute. You're the same reporter that gave me s***t at Lex's party." Plot hole so big a black hole couldn't suck it up.

@kong - exactly.

I loved it my first viewing just because of the imagery, and I turned my brain off hard.

as soon as the Martha scene came on I was just like "whatever that makes sense don't think about it" lol.

I had to try so hard to suspend my disbelief.

I wish they gave us a proper story of gods and men. they were doing ok until the actual fighting starts, and then they seemingly forget THE THEME OF THE MOVIE lol sad shit.
BloodyBed
BloodyBed - 8/16/2016, 6:12 AM
@Luminus - that's all true, but what do yu think about the possibility that clark said Martha because he knew it would throw batman off? after doing his homework and finding out about batmans past (off camera).

I mean the moment is still ridiculous, but I think looking at it that way makes it seem less so.
Matador
Matador - 8/16/2016, 9:38 AM
@ALostCause - that would have made Clark the detective and would have put two and two that Bruce Wayne was Batman.

He would have just shown up at the manor or the Batcave and gone WtF dude.

@ALostCause - "ut what do yu think about the possibility that clark said Martha because he knew it would throw batman off?"

Then he would've said that from jump. There's no reason to sit on that strategy, when someone's trying to kill you.
Luminus
Luminus - 8/16/2016, 10:55 PM
@Matador - Ikr, at what point did Superman even learn Batman's identity? He shows no reaction to finding out. He just calls Batman by his real name, right before getting attacked.

@Luminus - Must have been in one of the removed scenes we keep imagining.

@Luminus - oh nothing will be able to fix the plot hole of superman just NOT talking to batman the whole fight, except for threats.

I just think it makes the Martha moment less terrible. it's helping my psyche, I'm gonna believe it lol.

It's not the twist itself that was the problem. It had a decent ideology behind it. It's execution though - that was beyond pathetic. It felt like something out of Austin Powers or something.
