New Info On Why Jesse Eisenberg Was Cast As A Younger 'Lex Luthor' In MAN OF STEEL Sequel

THR have just posted a piece on why WB and Zack Snyder chose to go with a younger Lex than any previous screen incarnations of the character we've seen; and also drop another name that was in the mix for that role, who we'd been led to believe was up for Nightwing!

According to THR, although Warner Bros. and Zack Snyder "toyed" with the idea of hiring an older actor to portray the version of Lex we're most used to seeing, they ultimately decided to go with a much younger take - "more in line with several recent graphic-novel and TV incarnations, in which he is a childhood friend of the young Man of Steel." That seems to confirm that they'll be taking the Smallville route when it comes to Lex and Supes' relationship anyway. The site also reveal that Girls' Adam Driver was approached to play the role (we had thought he was up for Batman's former sidekick Nightwing) but had a conflict, and the previously named Joaquin Phoenix passed. It seems that Bryan Cranston was never so much as in talks though, as sources say that a wide net is not being cast when it comes to filling the various roles, with actors from a "narrow shortlist" being targeted. I really don't like the idea of Lex and Clark being buddy's. Why do they have to be friends. Why can't it just be that Lex meets Clark for the first time in Metropolis and in Smallville. Plus if Lex has been a friend of Clark's then he would know he is Superman. Pretty much everyone is Smallville knows who is Superman.

Knowing someone's identity doesn't mean you would tell everyone, to someone like Lex Luthor, knowledge is power

Besides, Jesse Eisenberg ruined his friendship with Spider-Man, it looks like he's going to do the same to Superman

I was hoping for a Lex Luthor that we could identify as being the greatest world industrialist or a high political figure not a computer hacker.

They should have saved Eisenberg for someone like Riddler.

@DEVLIN712

I am not saying he would go around and say who he really is. I just can't remember Lex finding out who he really was in the comics. So I don't know why you need to change it so he does. I am not sure if it's a Smallville thing or not. I will be getting a few episodes this weekend from my library to see if it's from that.

If they don't use the Smallville theme song as the intro for this movie I will be flippin tables. Would be a total missed opportunity.

Yeah, I don't mind that they're going to be childhood friends, they're both 30, so it can make sense that they'd have known eachother. But both went down very different paths.

Yeah, they were friends in Birthright by Mark Waid, which was a large influence on Man of Steel, so it makes sense they would continue in that direction.

Actually it brings a WHOOOOOOLE new dynamic now that it's put that way. Okay I'm on board for it.

The problem then is if his identity will be a secret to Lex (which would be stupid if it isn't)

DEV- I should try saying "so, what can I get you?" to every person who walks in.

Especially the kids.

Then, when they're about to get off, I'll say "Hey!! You call this a tip you cheap f*cking bastards?! AND WHO THE F*CK DO YOU THINK YOU'RE ACCUSING OF WATERING DOWN DRINKS????"

I know we're asking for original storytelling on this film, but there is NO WAY this idea in any incarnation is going to be original. I agree with the comments that the whole childhood friends things is not a good way to tell this story. I mean c'mon, it's also the same-ish story of Jor-El and Zod.... friends for life until one of them goes bad and the hero has to make a stand. If they go this route, the story of Supes becoming a hero takes a step backwards. No more flashbacks!!! No more childhood rescues because we moved past that. On the topiic of Luthor, he simply has no friends because he has no peers. That's how Jesse should be gearing his performance, he has no peers. There should be no play on Clark's part to bring Luthor back from the dark side. Just make the dude evil to the core. Not satanic, just with blatant disregard for human life and dignity. He wants more power and in his mind there is no moral high-ground to stand on, it's every willing and capable man for himself.

Now let's see that batsuit
