In Black Panther, Erik Killmonger manages to take over Wakanda and ingests a heart-shaped herb to become the new Black Panther. It obviously doesn't take long for T'Challa to return and reclaim his throne but one of the movie's most shocking moments comes when Killmonger dies despite the fact that he was played by the talented Michael B. Jordan and could have easily shown up again one day.
While he doesn't exactly find redemption in his closing monologue, it seems like he might be willing to change his perceptions until he turns down T'Challa's offer of help and lets himself die watching a Wakandan sunset. Now, director Ryan Coogler has confirmed that his death was always the plan.
"No, for him we always – that wasn’t something that we went back and forth on," he said in regards to possible redemption for one of Marvel's best villains. "His end was the same as draft one that it was in the film. Just because the idea was that these two things can’t coexist; if T’Challa and him… you know, that was a great tragedy of it for T’Challa, I think. But Killmonger was too far gone."
Killmonger wasn't Black Panther's only casualty but he was its most significant and his death was extremely powerful. Do you guys think Marvel made the right decision killing off Killmonger?
