BOX OFFICE: BLACK PANTHER Is Now Tracking For A $180 Million Opening Weekend

Estimates for Black Panther's opening weekend continue to rise and the latest tracking figures show the Marvel Studios movie debuting with a massive $180 million at the North American box office...

It's been clear for a while now that Black Panther is going to be a box office hit but after initial estimates rose from a $100 million opening weekend to $155 million - $170 million, the latest tracking details from Deadline actually point to a $180 million debut. In fact, the trade believes that it could even hit $200 million, a massive debut which would make it one of the biggest Marvel movies to date.

Apparently, distributors believe Black Panther will do unprecedented business in Atlanta, Baldwin Hills, and Harlem, a sign that it's going to draw a huge African-American audience. For the movie to hit these numbers, though, it will need to clear well over $20 million during tonight's preview screenings and then $75 million on Friday (including Thursday), $60 million on Saturday, and $40 million on Sunday.

If Black Panther doesn't hit $200 million, there will, of course, be those who discount it as a disappointment but even $150 million will be massive given those initial estimates and that's a big deal for a February release featuring an obscure comic book character. How much do you think the Ryan Coogler helmed movie will make over President's Day weekend? Let us know your thoughts below.

The movie was really good, not a masterpiece of course but really fun with good characters, can't wait to see a sequel by Coogler!

@Oskir - That's what I'm expecting. Hopefully there is a lot of action. I would love to see Chadwick kicking as much ass as possible. I just don't want it to be bogged down by political discourse and undertones that remind me of our current political climate and state of affairs. I can just turn on various news sites for that. For me, superhero movies are about escape.

@killswitch311 - Well don't expect too much then, there are a lot of social and political themes in it and the action is not that amazing to be honest (it is good but not memorable fight besides one). It is mostly because of some cheap fx and green screen in the third act.

But otherwise the characters are really great, all of them, the screenplay is not perfect but enjoyable and Wakand looks fantastic!

@Oskir - Oh ok cool. Well good characters are always a plus and I Can't wait to see Michael B. Jordan as a villain (ever since Fruitvale Station, I've always liked his work), and Wakanda does look amazing on the previews that I've seen. Thanks for the feedback!

@killswitch311 - No problem! I am also a fan of Jordan since Chronicle and yeah it is a great vilain!

Don't hype yourself too much to not be disapointed and I am sure you will love this movie. Too much hype is never good

Who on earth would consider it a disappointment? You just said last week the tracking was half at what it is now! Only 1 MCU movie has opened over $200 million... Why do you make stupid claims like this? But I guess it worked because I actually took the time to comment. Still worth it to call you out though.

@JFogg - We live in a world where some people think TLJ lost Disney money though.
