BLACK WIDOW: Disney Still Plans To Release The Movie Theatrically And NOT Straight To Streaming

It's expected that during tonight's investor call, Disney will confirm that Marvel's Black Widow will be released in theaters as planned, and not on Disney+. Find out more details after the jump...

Warner Bros. releasing its entire slate on HBO Max in 2021 has created a lot of discussion in the film industry, and it was recently reported that the studio hopes Disney will follow its example. That would certainly go some way towards taking the heat off WarnerMedia, but those of you hoping to have the option to watch Black Widow on Disney+ the same day it arrives in theaters will be disappointed.

According to The New York Times, "contrary to widespread speculation, 'Black Widow,' a much-anticipated Marvel spectacle, will remain on Disney’s theatrical release calendar for May 7, the people with knowledge of the presentation said."

That is seemingly going to be confirmed during Disney's Investor meeting later today, though it's unclear whether Black Widow will have a shortened theatrical window, being made available on Disney+ sooner than it normally would be (possibly on that $29.99 Premier Access service again).

As the site goes on to explain, while movies do attract subscribers, it's TV shows like The Mandalorian which make sure they continue to pay on a monthly basis. That's why the streamer currently has "eight Marvel shows based on characters like Loki and She-Hulk" in development.

Make sure to check back here later, as we'll have all the latest for you from that Investor Day meeting!

10 MCU movies according to Rotten Tomatoes!

10. Ant-Man

Score: 83%

Rotten or Fresh? Certified Fresh

Critics Consensus: Led by a charming performance from Paul Rudd, Ant-Man offers Marvel thrills on an appropriately smaller scale -- albeit not as smoothly as its most successful predecessors.

Ant-Man was a lot of fun, but it's hard to escape the feeling that the Edgar Wright version would have been so much better (the best moments were reportedly lifted from his screenplay). While Hank Pym not being a founding Avenger was a let down, Scott Lang was a great character to spend time with and Marvel did a solid job of setting the stage for a new Wasp.

9. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (TIE)

Score: 85%

Rotten or Fresh? Certified Fresh

Critics Consensus: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2's action-packed plot, dazzling visuals, and irreverent humor add up to a sequel that's almost as fun -- if not quite as thrillingly fresh -- as its predecessor.

Expectations were high on James Gunn to deliver the goods with this sequel, and he definitely didn't disappoint. Baby Groot was a hoot to spend time with, but all of the characters were given the chance to shine and the emotional moments were surrounded by one hell of a soundtrack. It's surprising this didn't rate higher, but given what it ties with, there's no denying it was a critical hit!

9. Avengers: Infinity War (TIE)

Score: 85%

Rotten or Fresh? Certified Fresh

Critics Consensus: Avengers: Infinity War ably juggles a dizzying array of MCU heroes in the fight against their gravest threat yet, and the result is a thrilling, emotionally resonant blockbuster that (mostly) realizes its gargantuan ambitions.

Marvel promised that Avengers: Infinity War would celebrate the MCU's tenth anniversary in epic fashion and it most certainly did, providing an incredible team-up between Earth's Mightiest Heroes and the Guardians of the Galaxy as they came together to battle Thanos. Full of surprises, amazing action, and stellar performances, this was Marvel's best...until the sequel came along!

8. Ant-Man and The Wasp

Score: 87%

Rotten or Fresh? Certified Fresh

Critics Consensus: A lighter, brighter superhero movie powered by the effortless charisma of Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly, Ant-Man and The Wasp offers a much-needed MCU palate cleanser.

Ant-Man And The Wasp is a lot of fun and definitely an improvement over the first instalment. However, director Peyton Reed too often plays it safe and while there's a lot of good stuff here, it's not quite enough to put it alongside Marvel's best. Evangeline Lilly finally suiting up was great to see, though, but it's surprising this score isn't slightly lower based on the underwhelming villain alone!

7. Doctor Strange

Score: 89%

Rotten or Fresh? Certified Fresh

Critics Consensus: Doctor Strange artfully balances its outré source material against the blockbuster constraints of the MCU, delivering a thoroughly entertaining superhero origin story in the bargain.

Just like Guardians of the Galaxy introduced cosmic adventures to the MCU, Doctor Strange gave us magic. A movie full of breathtaking visuals, this origin story for the Sorcerer Supreme set the stage for the hero to become the new face of the MCU as we barrel towards Marvel's Phase 4, and while it's a shame Scott Derrickson isn't returning, Sam Raimi is a terrific replacement.

6. Captain America: The Winter Soldier (TIE)

Score: 90%

Rotten or Fresh? Certified Fresh

Critics Consensus: Suspenseful and politically astute, Captain America: The Winter Soldier is a superior entry in the Avengers canon and is sure to thrill Marvel diehards.

No one expected too much from the Russo Brothers heading into the release of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, but they delivered in spades here, and gave the franchise the kick up the butt it arguably needed. The story revolving around Steve Rogers and Bucky was extraordinary, and the fight scenes were on par with The Raid. This movie was truly something special.

6. Spider-Man: Far From Home (TIE)

FFG

Score: 90%

Rotten or Fresh? Certified Fresh

Critics Consensus: A breezily unpredictable blend of teen romance and superhero action, Spider-Man: Far from Home stylishly sets the stage for the next era of the MCU.

Jon Watts outdid himself with this sequel, and as predictable as that Mysterio twist may have been, Jake Gyllenhaal was clearly having fun as the villain. The visuals were amazing, the action scenes were spectacular, and that mid-credits scene twist was nothing short of mind-blowing, especially with the surprise return of J.K. Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson from the Spider-Man franchise.

5. Guardians of the Galaxy (TIE)

Score: 91%

Rotten or Fresh? Certified Fresh

Critics Consensus: Guardians of the Galaxy is just as irreverent as fans of the frequently zany Marvel comic would expect -- as well as funny, thrilling, full of heart, and packed with visual splendor.

James Gunn did an incredible job of taking us into the cosmic side of the MCU for the first time, and getting to hang out with Star-Lord and company was a lot of fun. It's just a shame that Ronan the Accuser ended up being another one of those typical Marvel villains who died after his plan failed, but there were so many other great characters and moments, that really didn't matter.

5. Captain America: Civil War (TIE)

Score: 91%

Rotten or Fresh? Certified Fresh

Critics Consensus: Captain America: Civil War begins the next wave of Marvel movies with an action-packed superhero blockbuster boasting a decidedly non-cartoonish plot and the courage to explore thought-provoking themes.

Seeing Earth's Mightiest Heroes go to war with each other was nothing short of amazing, even if it didn't quite follow the Civil War comic as much as some fans hoped. The Russos proved themselves in a big way and it's no wonder Marvel then got them to helm Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame once they were done. To their credit, epic action was coupled with powerful moments.

4. The Avengers (TIE)

Score: 92%

Rotten or Fresh? Certified Fresh

Critics Consensus: Thanks to a script that emphasizes its heroes' humanity and a wealth of superpowered set pieces, The Avengers lives up to its hype and raises the bar for Marvel at the movies.

Many fans believed that Earth's Mightiest Heroes assembling on the big screen would be impossible, but Joss Whedon pulled it off and introduced a fun new tone to the MCU. The defeat of the Chitauri was a tad convenient, but it's hard to find too many faults with this movie, even if it does feel dated by today's standards. At the time, though, make no mistake about it: this was groundbreaking.

4. Spider-Man: Homecoming (TIE)

Score: 92%

Rotten or Fresh? Certified Fresh

Critics Consensus: Spider-Man: Homecoming does whatever a second reboot can, delivering a colorful, fun adventure that fits snugly in the sprawling MCU without getting bogged down in franchise-building.

Grounding Spider-Man in Queens and keeping him out of Manhattan was definitely disappointing, but the reboot did a great job of introducing a new take on Peter Parker. All that technology in his suit was a tad much (as was Iron Man's recurring presence), but it was needed to provide a fresh take on the iconic hero, especially on the back of those awful Amazing Spider-Man movies.

3. Thor: Ragnarok

Score: 93%

Rotten or Fresh? Certified Fresh

Critics Consensus: Exciting, funny, and above all fun, Thor: Ragnarok is a colorful cosmic adventure that sets a new standard for its franchise -- and the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Thor: Ragnarok is hilarious (giving Chris Hemsworth chance to show off his comedic skills), but doesn't hold back on epic action. The Hulk was also reinvented to some extent, and Taika Waititi helped set the stage for what would come next for him this shared world. Throw in Valkyrie, The Grandmaster, and Hela, and there's so much to love, it's no wonder this comes in at third place.

2. Iron Man (TIE)

Score: 94%

Rotten or Fresh? Certified Fresh

Critics Consensus: Powered by Robert Downey Jr.'s vibrant charm, Iron Man turbo-charges the superhero genre with a deft intelligence and infectious sense of fun.

A true classic and where the Marvel Cinematic Universe began, Iron Man remains every bit as enjoyable to watch today as it was over a decade ago. Everything from seeing the suit in action (which was groundbreaking back in 2008) to Robert Downey Jr.'s performance made this very special indeed, and director Jon Favreau's work rightly put him on the map in a major way.

2. Avengers: Endgame (TIE)

Score: 94%

Rotten or Fresh? Certified Fresh

Critics Consensus: Exciting, entertaining, and emotionally impactful, Avengers: Endgame does whatever it takes to deliver a satisfying finale to Marvel's epic Infinity Saga.

Wow. When it comes to superhero movies, Avengers: Endgame has set a benchmark, and Marvel's culmination to over a decade's worth of stories simply works in just about every way. The ending is going to sting for a while, but it just felt right, and the Russo Brothers delivered countless moments we'll all be talking about for years to come. However, critics loved this next one more...

1. Black Panther

Score: 96%

Rotten or Fresh? Certified Fresh

Critics Consensus: Black Panther elevates superhero cinema to thrilling new heights while telling one of the MCU's most absorbing stories -- and introducing some of its most fully realized characters.

What a movie. This remains arguably Marvel's most important releases, and it delivered a strong, inspirational message which everyone could relate to. Throw in one of the best Marvel Studios villains ever and a strong story, and this one was firing on all cylinders. It's no wonder it received so much awards attention, but what a shame it didn't win the big one at the Oscars last year.

Rest in Power, Chadwick Boseman.

Will be nice to see in on the big screen, but who knows when that will actually be.

Lets face it a lot of stuff probably going to bomb, even when things start going back to normal. People loose interest and when with most of 2020's movies not being released in 2020, and the 2021 movies, its going to be a packed year, who is going to watch every movie

@Origame -
Only reasoning it is happening is because Mulan performed terribly on streaming and they want to ensure they get a return on investment with the next few films they have, to keep investors happy. They can excuse current loses on the pandemic restrictions, but when the pandemic restrictions begin to ease up they'll need to prove themselves profitable and popular to keep people hooked.

It's true that they already have the D+ MCU shows to entice Marvel fans into paying the subscription. Black Widow would kind of be redundant trying to fill that capacity.

Having said that, if there is a case for Black Widow needing to be seen before some of those shows can make sense (looking at you Hawkeye) then things get a bit stickier.

I think Disney sees that, even though it definitely will make less money, there is still a profit gained for both Marvel and the cinemas with releasing them in cinemas only.

We have;
• An unknown virus with similar symptoms to radiation poisoning that is worse than Covid coming that is currently in India
• Warnings from Bill Gates about the Nipah Virus
• A Bird Flu resurgence in multiple countries

Even if all these aspects were not a factor, no cinema is going to take the risk of opening only to have to close again. Personally think we need a shift back to outdoor cinema's for summer. Would make cinema's a seasonal thing with movies being aired in summer and shifting to online for winter.

They are stating 'Unknown Virus/Unidentified illness in India' but the symptoms are akin to Mercury poisoning or Radiation sickness.

I would suspect that the “cash in on opening weekends in theaters, move to streaming as well for $20-25 in a few weeks” model is the most likely strategy at this point. I doubt that they can do the $30 price point for a film that has already bled off audience for a few weekends, but the normal price of a DVD could work.

Still queuing up that big laugh for once all this shit is over and turns out WB move to same day stream and theatrical release, doesn't kill theater like all our experts here on CBM insist it will. Even if it continues post pandemic, theater will be fine. If theaters die, it will be due to covid alone and it will have died before the pandemic is over.

hope it's released for christmas for streaming. it would be nice to watch this movie to get us through the holidays since we're not allowed to get together with family and friends because of COVID. Disney once again showing that they're all about making as much as they can rather than maybe making a little less but helping out the fans that have supported their businesses for years.
