BLACK WIDOW Star Scarlett Johansson Makes It Clear Her Character Is Dead Following AVENGERS: ENDGAME

In Avengers: Endgame, Black Widow made the ultimate sacrifice when she threw herself off that cliff on Vormir in order to ensure that Hawkeye would be able to return to Earth with the Soul Stone.

Despite that, many fans remain convinced that the character could have survived, especially as a solo movie starring Scarlett Johansson as the fallen Avenger is set to arrive in theaters next May. The prevailing theory is that Black Widow is set between the events of Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, and now the actress has weighed in on the matter.

"I can’t wait to share it with everybody," she said of the upcoming Black Widow movie. "It was fantastic. I mean, I’m partial, but I’m pretty excited about. Honestly, it brought a closure to me that I needed. Yeah, ’cause I was kind of wiped out in that last one, emotionally and literally."

"There’s very few certain things, but definitely death’s pretty certain, right? Yeah, definitely, for sure. But, people, they definitely don’t believe it and have tried to convince me that my character did not actually die, but that maybe my character exists in an alternate universe, but no, I think death is the final thing." That could be a tease that there's another Black Widow out there somewhere, but common sense says that Johansson's time as the hero is at an end.

Except both Tony Stark and Natasha Romanoff are indeed alive in Timeline C. Timeline B is the branched Timeline that Loki escaped in 2012. Timeline C is the branched timeline in which Thanos of 2014 time traveled to 2023 and perished along with his army.

Timeline C also lost it's Gamora & Nebula. But since Thanos is dead he will never invade Earth or Xandar in Timeline C thus negating Guardians of The Galaxy & Infinity War from ever happening in timeline C allowing Natasha and Tony to live.

@SonOfAGif - Poor Xandar gets destroyed either way, as Ronan almost definitely gets his hands on the Power Stone in timeline C.

I’m convinced they will have a post credit scene where Cap saves Black Widow. If he returns the soul stone to just before she jumped, stands to reason she would never have died. There’s a reason they are A) making the movie at all and B) releasing it was the first post Endgame Marvel movie. (FFH doesn’t really count.)

@Pigdango - Wasn't the only reason Ronan got his hands on the Power Stone because Thanos told him to find and in return would destroy Xandar for him?

And how does Far From Home not count? It deals with the aftermath of Endgame in the most aftermath-kind-of-way

@SonOfAGif - Unless they die another way in that timeline. Not being killed during the Infinity Saga doesn’t mean they’re automatically alive. They would have lived different lives compared to the Tony and Nat we know because their timeline doesn’t match the others.

@SonOfAGif - True they are alive in timeline C but you can't pull them from that timeline into timeline A because then their friends/family from that timeline lose them and it's back to square one

@MalseMarcel - You can go crazy trying to work out the What Ifs?, but I imagine the thinking is that War Machine and Nebula knocked out Quill on his was to get the Power Stone, and Korath was only moments behind Quill, So Ronan was already looking to retrieve it for Thanos and would likely keep it in the absence of Thanos. The Guardians wouldn’t come together and Ronan would win.

Much of that is avoided if Cap just waits for Korath to show up, find nothing, and leave before replacing the stone though. I’m sure that Nebula knew enough about how things played out to offer up a plan there.

@MalseMarcel - Ronan going after the stone was already in motion at the point in 2014 that they took the stone from. Remember Korath was at the same place as Star Lord at the beginning of GotG. It's likely Star Lord was still out cold at the moment Cap replaced the stone, meaning Korath grabbed it and...bye bye Xandar. :-(

FFH isn't a Marvel Studios movie, so they had limited say on when it was released. Black Widow is the first Marvel Studios movie since Endgame. Maybe it's a coincidence. Maybe not. FFH counts, but if they bring Black Widow back, nothing in FFH would contradict that. Especially with Fury being a Skrull and Spidey spending most of the movie in Europe isolated from the Avengers.

@SonOfAGif - it’s possible that when Captain America goes back, by returning the Soul Stone to Vormir, the exchange wa undone. Perhaps, unbeknownst to Captain America, Black Widow is chilling on Vormir with Red Skull in Timeline C.

We could continue seeing the black widow at Disney +. A show entitled "Red Room" could be interesting.

There's no reason to bring the character back. Just move on with Florence Pugh's Yelena as Widow.

@Necropolitan -

I think this whole movies purpose is to just pass the torch to Yelena and set her up to continue on.

@TheBlueMorpho - Absolutely. There is even the possibility that Natasha Romanoff isn't even the main protagonist.

@Necropolitan - Two things: There's no point in that. People care about Scar-Jo's Black Widow, putting someone else in the same suit isn't going to make everyone care. Also - if they end the Black Widow movie, which takes place before Infinity War, with Yelena as the new Black Widow...Where was she during the events of Infinity War? I mean...I suppose they could have a post credits scene where Yelena takes up the mantle after the events of Endgame, but I don't know. The whole project is weird, so I guess you could be right.

Putting my money on there are clones of Natasha and eventually the soul of the original Natasha will be fused with the clone body.

Of course she'd say that even if she was alive.

I'm looking forward to this film. I have a feeling it'll be one of the MCU best, ala Winter Soldier.

Nah, now that the Avengers have a time travel machine nobody is truly dead.
