Why Do We Need a BLACK PANTHER Film?

CookieKid explains why we need a Black Panther CBM in our lives...

OK. Comic book nerds have been complaining (especially me) for a long time that we need a Black Panther film, especially with the success of The Avengers and talks of stand-alone films for characters like Hawkeye, Black Widow and Hulk. With Hawkeye and Black Widow it seems now like a time to start introducing new characters. They gave us Winter Soldier, soon we'll have Ultron and Ant-Man and the Guardians of the Galaxy. However, alot of people don't know the neccessity for a Black Panther movie.

Reason #1 The Rights
Marvel, Fox and Sony need to get the Black Panther rights in order. BP has been seen in Fantastic Four, The Avengers and even Spider-Man. That's three different franchises spread across three different corporations. So they need to decide this now so we know if Marvel will make the movie or if Fox gets some BP like the Quicksilver rights.  It's hard to build seperate universes (which is a dumb idea to me) with use of the same characters in all the franchises. I would personally love to see BP go to Marvel, which is the most likely case. They've dropped hints but nothing seems in the works yet and I would say we deserve a BP movie before Avengers 3 (same goes for Miss Marvel). They truly have the edge here as they can pretty much throw any random comic, say we're gonna make it into a movie and people will buy it because that's how much of a role Marvel has been on lately.

Reason #2 There's No Time Like the Present
Cap is at an all-time high as far as popularity and I would love to see Chris Evans keep portraying my personal favorite superhero for a long time before Bucky takes the torch. That being said Black Panther has went toe-to-toe with Cap and even lives where the vinbranium for his shield is located, which is Africa. Black Panther is an amazing athlete and BP vs. Cap would be amazing to see brought to film possibly in Cap 3. T'Challa is capable of going toe-to-toe with many Marvel superheroes. He's like Tony Stark and Steve Rogers bundled up so even seeing him and Cap team up to face a greater enemy would be entertaining. Also, with black characters popping up more and more (Human Torch, Electro, Falcon) it seems like the perfect time to bring T'Challa in.

Reason #3 We Only Care About the Important Stuff
Marvel has reportedly been looking for actors in South Africa to play BP but I feel like that's a waste on Marvel's
part. As far as just getting a stand-alone film, BP is in the same league as Deadpool at this point. Cast an actor already. Black Panther wears a full-body suit and you can literally see none of him while he's got it on. Every fancast for BP someone says "he's not dark enough" or "he's too old". I honestly think if you cast Michael Jai White as BP and just used a stunt double for all the hard work we'd be happy. That may jsut be me because I do feel the same way about Deadpool. But I have noticed a pattern. With fully-costumed heroes like BP or Deadpool we just need an unmasked actor and their voice. I know alot of people who wouldn't care in the slightest if PeeWee Herman was Deadpool's stunt double (just exaggeration) as long as Ryan Reynolds was the voice and was there if the character took off the mask. Same with Black Panther so Marvel shoudl just stop beating around the bush for perfection when the answer is clear as day.

Black Panther is going to happen soon although i'm optimistic that it will be in Phase 3. I'm also not sure if Wakanda will be shown in Age of Ultron, the Ultron robots may need vibranium, where else could you get vibranium other than in Wakanda. I think it would be a good opportunity to introduce Black Panther or have the character be an easter egg in Age of Ultron, then maybe give Black Panther a spin off film.

I read some where that the Fantastic Four sequel to Rise of the Silver Surfer where going to have Black Panther. It was mentioned by Tim Story to IGN in an interview that he would like to have the actor Djimon Hounsou as the Black Panther.Since Silver Surfer was the only favorite character of mine in Rise of the Silver Surfer i guess FOX's Black Panther could have been cool.

I've just never been a fan of Black Panther i understand he's cool but i find Doctor Strange more interesting, that's just me.

Personally I love Black Panther because of his ethnicity and origin. I think it would be awesome if we had an African American superhero. I mean most of them are white lol I really liked Falcon too in Captain America TWS and I think that just goes to show that MARVEL should make Black Panther even more with the reception of how Falcon's character was received.

And with Storm, can't they just do what they're doing with Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch? Just call her Ororo and say she is a miracle or something similar? idk.

i dont think it matters Marvel seems to act like black panther is with them and no other studio has even mentioned the character so im pretty sure he's with marvel studios.

Hey, you finally made an actual article...

Yeah, umm.....you're the first person to ever remotely suggest that the rights belong to some other studio. You're wrong, it's always been very clear that he belongs to Marvel. And quite frankly, even if he is shared, that's not a reason to do a film right now. It's not like Marvel will lose his rights if they don't, or lose shared rights if Fox used him first. It doesn't work like that, as Quicksilver shows.

I'm not sure if a solo film is needed. I do want to see him in Avengers eventually, but not every Avenger needs a solo film.

@MrSotoMan, about 4/5 of the articles on here show why fanboys usually don't work in movies, lol. This one included.

@TheReddestHood

Wolverine first appeared fighting Hulk in Incredible Hulk #180 does that mean he should belong to Marvel as a Hulk character.

As CA: TWS has shown, you don't need a love interest plot point in a CBM. BP is not defined by an iconic love interest. Without it, a BP film will do just fine.

Marvel Copyrighted the Movie title already so there is no way anyone else can use him. And There is a rumor that Chadwick Boseman was in South Africa during the filming of the scenes for AOU...which makes people think he's going to appear in the Avengers

Good write up! I hope they have BP in AOU as a cameo to build movies off of. I honestly don't think you need a love interest. I would love to seem Storm and BP and it certainly helps but there is a rich history to the character that it isn't necessarily needed. You certainly can do a good story without it. It would be nice to see more diversity, though we've had War Machine, Falcon and can't forget Blade.

Wouldn't there need to be a director in place before casting is underway? Branagh worked with marvel to choose hemsworth and hiddles. Johnston chose Evans, favs chose rdj, etc. there hasn't been a new franchise movie in production where the director hasn't give his/her say on who is cast as the leads. Whedon even replaced norton with Ruffalo because it lined up more with who he hand in mind for the role of hulk (it also ended the drama). This isn't to say that marvel has no say, but I think they work with the directors to find their leads.

I think it's premature for people to think marvels courting actors before they find a director with a good script for the movie. It could happen for sure, but I highly doubt it. We have a director for Dr. Strange now, and I'm sure a cast will follow. The same will happen for black panther

Black Panther could be an amazing film. But Storm is not needed for his story to be compelling. They met once in 1980 and then were married in 2006 (only to be split apart a few years later). So there literally is 40+ years worth of stories that involve his love for Wakanda and the lengths he'll go to protect it as its leader that would make a very interesting story.

I think Fox should technically own Namor as well, traditionally he was an iconic F4 villain/sometimes comrade. That's not even mentioning the fact that he joined the X-Men in later years....

I actually think he's one of those shared characters, he has a rich history with F4, X-Men AND Avengers. So I think he's Quicksilver and SW.
Trickwil
Trickwil - 6/9/2014, 1:54 PM
@GuardianDevil- Namor I believe is a mixed property so I think you're right it belongs to a lot of different people, but i think Fox has the best legal claim because he's a mutant.

An Africa superhero wont sell, it's as simple as that. Never sold well in the comics, wouldn't shift enough toys and certainly would sell as a $200M movie, that's why no one will ever make it. Doesn't help that the character's main appeal relies on gimmick that no one will care about in 2014. Bland character who has to borrow villains from other heroes in addition to having no stories that would make for a good film adaptation. The character doesn't need a movie.

Ok. I like your article and I like your enthusiasm but i have a few comments.

firstly, black panther is owned by marvel kevin fiege did mention that on one of the red carpets for the movies a while back, so nothing to worry about there. quicksilver and scarlet witch are an exception, i think there might be a few others but the black panther isn't 1 of them.

i like the comparison with cap, but i don't want to be seen as cap 2.0. i don't think he will appear in any other marvel movie, though he may be mentioned, kind of like how strange was mentioned in cap 2.

anti last point i don't think marvel is going about casting the wrong way, if it's true. Because it's the same deal with the hulk right?mark ruffalo needs to appear as bruce banner for a certain period of The movie. same with rdj as tony stark. you'll see the actors face most of the times for the movie, and then i think people forget he is not african american. He's african. of course they are wanting to get an african to play him it's part of his identity

anyway, i like your article keep it up!
