CBM FRIDAY FLASHBACK - What Was In The News On This Day 1 Year, 5 Years, And 10 Years Ago?

What were the biggest headlines on ComicBookMovie.com this day in 2019, 2015, and 2010? In this new feature, we take a Friday flashback to those years to show you just how much the landscape has changed...

Feature Opinion

In this new ComicBookMovie.com feature, we're taking a look back at what was making headlines on the site one year (2019), five years (2015), and ten years (2010) ago.

Honestly, heading back into CBM's archives to see what was going on is kind of mind-blowing and really shows how much things have changed for both the site and the superhero movie genre. While you might not think that much has changed in such a short amount of time, we're pretty sure these stories will surprise you (especially the rumours that didn't ultimately pan out).

In this first edition of this feature, we take a look at a then quite concerning rumour about The Avengers, reflect on a Captain America: Civil War leak that was getting fans excited, and remind you of some very interesting comments about Steve Rogers post-Avengers: Endgame.

10 Years Ago...The Avengers Pre-Production Delayed Due To Budget Issues?

Back in 2010, many of us still couldn't quite believe that The Avengers was happening. That probably explains why there were so many concerns about this rumour shared by Bleeding Cool.

"Marvel are demanding that it all get done on the relative cheap," the site claimed at the time. "For something not far off what Sony paid to make their first Spider-Man film back in 2004."

"And while some people have walked off, others are planning a longer game. Basically do the work, then when they run out of budget (which they believe they will) trust that Marvel Studios and their investors will pony up the extra necessary cash rather than leave the movie unfinished."

We may never know whether there was any truth to that latter point, but watching the 2012 movie, it's clear that Marvel Studios definitely weren't cutting costs. Remember, at this point in 2010, neither Thor nor Captain America: The First Avenger had arrived in theaters yet, so fans didn't know what to expect.

5 Years Ago...Captain America: Civil War Promo Art Leaks Online

When this Captain America: Civil War concept art leaked online, fans hadn't seen a thing from the movie, not even a brief teaser trailer. The comments sections here on CBM were full of users desperate for footage from what was quite clearly going to be one of the biggest Marvel Studios releases to date.

As you can see below, this promo art didn't reveal much, but just the sight of Captain America squaring off with Iron Man was pretty mind-blowing, and like seeing the comic books come to life.

It was always obvious that Captain America: Civil War would revolve around these two going to war with each other, but seeing it in promo art like this made it feel real, and that was very special indeed.

1 Year Ago...Avengers: Endgame Writers Don't Want To Bring Captain America Back To The MCU

L-R-Peli-Motto-Amy-Sedaris-the-Mandalorian-Pedro-Pascal-and-The-Child-in-Lucasfilm-s-THE-MANDALORIAN

This time last year, we had no idea there was going to be a pandemic and that pretty much every 2020 superhero movie would be pushed into 2021 (we're still not sure that will happen).

Last November, there was still a lot of interest in Avengers: Endgame, and we shared an interview with writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely via Screen Rant. "I love writing for Cap, I love Evans," Markus said. "But I really feel, much like Tony, we got them to a place where they don't need to do it anymore. I'd hate to gin up something hokey to get them back."

That's right, they were explaining why it would be a bad idea to bring Captain America back, and one year on, Evans still hasn't shown any interest in returning.

"I do worry that if they do stuff like that, it'll ding Endgame in the rearview mirror," McFeely added. "This is such an important and such an interesting moment in movies, because a very successful studio just put their tools down."

Nah I’m good...NEXT button being the only option now? I’ll skip Wilding’s 22 page clickbait articles...

Speaking of Wilding, haven’t seen another writer's article get stolen, then mysteriously vanish for a little bit now...News has been slow but that never seemed to stop him before...

Also finished rewatching the entire MCU. Main takeaways. One of the best series ever made. Age of Ultron better than I remembered it. Captain Marvel barely watchable and easily the worst of the series.

Some of the best character arc work of any franchise

I dig these articles to be honest. I remember reading these exact stories. It's crazy to think I've been on this site for well over a decade now.

Can't wait to see the recap of 2020.. 😑

O.t. perhaps - but I havnt been able to stop laughing at this clip. It is so depressing yet that one line from Ricky Berwick is just pure perfection.

Shit man i remember when the first avengers came out, i saw the movie in theatres, went home watched it again twice then for weeks/months just watched it over and over again. I always loved 'superheroes' when i was a kid (fav shows were justice league/xmen/teen titans) so when they finally came out with a GOOD superhero flick, i was like a kid in a candy store!

Now ive seen them all and ive watched them so many times i'm actually tired of watching them and want something new. [still wish they made an avengers TV show]
