Captain America Movie Looking to Start in June

How Close Are We To Learning Who Will Play Captain America?

In a recent Fangoria article, Joe Johnston had this to say about taking over as Director of The Wolfman.

"By the time I got on a plane and arrived, it was three,” recalls Johnston, speaking from the art department of THE FIRST AVENGER: CAPTAIN AMERICA, which he’s readying for a June start. “But at that point, what kind of difference can a week make?”

Now what is relevant here, is that he is already involved in production on Captain America, and they are preparing for a June start.

Which leads me to these questions.

1. How far in advance of the actual shooting did we learn Hemsworth would be Thor?

2. Was it the same time differential that we started getting Iron Man 2 casting information?

3. If so, when can we expect Captain America news?

I thought these questions could lend themselves to some decent discussions.

I know all of us can't wait for this.

LEEE: I hope so. I was trying to remember how many months between casting news and actual shooting on Marvels' other movies. I'm sure the time in between would be about the same on Captain America. If it is, then we should have a pretty good idea when we will hear something.

What do you mean You didn't get any news? You found out that production has begun, Ya goofball!!

If I remember correctly it wasn't supposed to start until mid Jan.

I still don't understand how The First Avenger is going to open a month after Thor, when it starts shooting 6 months later. I expect to hear a change for the opening, unless they are allowing that much more time for the special effects in Thor.

Hawks @ Thor is more fantasy based. They will need a lot of time for the F/X after they finish shooting. Cap does not need that much time for the effects, but still, they start shooting a year before release? What is this? SAW? Hope they got a very good game plan.

@ hawk

well, i COULD be mistaken, but i think we learned Hemsworth was Thor november of last year. Thor comes out summer of 2011. So if you want to use that as a guideline, then we should have heard Cap casting news in November, considering that Cap comes out summer of 2012. but we'll be hearing casting news any time now. favreau or feige (can't remember which) said we would hear Cap casting news in january some time, so i wouldn't worry too much...for now. :)

also, Cap doesn't come out the same summer as Thor. Cap is 2012, avengers is 2013. one a year...and that ain't not bad lol

CDB:This is what I found for release dates, correct me please, if they have been changed again.

Iron Man 2 - May 7, 2010 - May 7, 2010
Thor - July 16, 2010 - June 17, 2011
The First Avenger: Captain America - May 6, 2011 - July 22, 2011
The Avengers - July 15, 2011 - May 4, 2012

And did we really know about Hemsworth a year in advance? It didn't seem that long.

Kes: That would be very cool.

Great article HAWKS! Fingers crossed that it will be in the New Year!

Wasnt it more than six months ago that Hemsworth was cast as Thor!? Surely if the same thing will happen with Cap it should be in the next month or so that a casting announcement is made!

I would have thought it'll be February at the latest anyway...

Hawksblueyes - 12/27/2009, 11:01 AM
josh: Thanks man. I'm thinking it was arround 5 or 6 months. If so, that would put us right up on some announcements.

CDB said it's been a year, but I don't think so. Though I could be wrong.

Excellent article, Hawksblue.

I wish I knew the answer to how long ago it was that we found out about Hemsworth. It was a pretty long time ago, but I have something to add that I don't think has been said yet. I understand that it MIGHT be profitable to look at the announcement of Hemsworth as Thor as a precedent on which to establish expectations for the announcement of an actor for the role of Cap. BUT we all need to keep in mind that Johnston and Branagh are two different people, and their respective groups of movie makers that they deal with are different from each other also. In short, it might be that Johnston will attempt to keep it a secret for some reason. In fact it's entirely possible that they have chosen already but just not bothered to let anyone know or just endeavored to keep it hush hush t avoid some early backlash from fans.

Just a thought or two.

@ Josh: I agree. February or early March for an announcement makes sense to me.

Personally I am kind of dumbfounded they are actually waiting six months to start... It just seems kind of like cutting it close..

Eric Winter for Cap, He is kinda a unknown not a bad actor from what i seen. He played in The Ugly Truth with Gerald Bulter. I think he has the look any thoughts?

We have to remember that Johnston only started full production in October. That does have a big factor in announcements and such.

Branagh was working on Thor longer than Johnston, so it doesn't surprise me how it's much further along in development.

But, I do hope we get an announcement in January. Fingers crossed.

Darth: Thanks. Excellent points my friend, as usual. To add on to that train of thought, the article I did last week on a possible Thor cameo in IM2 was taken from a Newsarama article.

In that article was the statement that casting for Captain America has yet to be announced.

Notice it didn't say hasn't begun, or was underway, but has yet to be announced.

I thought that odd at the time, and it would fit nicely in your theory.

@ Tyler: I sure hope so. The anticipation is making me twitchy lol

@ Hawks: Yeah some transparency on their part would be nice. They may not know that we fans are here outside the Hollywood bubble just dying to know. Or they may know and don't give a crap. Or maybe they know it's a heated issue among fans and they aren't confident in their pick so they don't want to tell us.

At any rate we still have something of a wait ahead of us. :s

Darth: I'm sure they know people are waiting impatiantly, my gues is the announcement will coincide with some other event.

By the same token, I'm also sure that whoever they announce is not going to please everybody. There is no way it could. I do believe they haven't taken this casting lightly, and even if it doesn't seem like a good choice at first, they have seen something from whomever it may be , that we didn't.

Wow at this rate we won't know who CAP is until April or May. I thought he'd be cast way back in October? What's up with that?

Anyway Thor seems to be a little more interesting to me right now then CAP. I'm just so curious to see how Chris Hemsworth does at Thor. It just feels his proformance can make or break the Avengers movie.

You've been UNMASKED!

LOL:::: Here we go!!

I dislike Worthington for Cap almost as much as I dislike Ackles.

I would love Damon or Valley for Cap. IMO, Valley IS Cap, but he is too old to start with a bunch of sequals, which is a shame.

I also think Michael Shanks is a good choice for Cap. He has the look and he's been great in everything I've seen him in
