Let me begin this review like this: Do not read or spoil anything for yourself. I ruined a couple of things, but not enough to dimish my reaction to the movie. In hindsight, I wish I had come in completely fresh. Once we've all seen it, I look forward to discussing certain parts of the story that I can't currently mention.
Briefly, I'll tell you that Cap is among my least favorite Marvel characters. I enjoyed the Winter Soldier storylines in the comics when they first came out, but haven't kept up since. I did however love The First Avenger. It gave me what I felt was a realistic Captain America who was actually interesting. Then this movie came out.
I'm trying to resist the urge to tell you that it's my favorite CBM. It's too early to tell, especially with successes like Avengers, Dark Knight and yes, even Wolverine (not Origins). The film nails virtually every aspect perfectly, though I would have enjoyed a little more time learning about the Winter Soldier. I suspect a solo film will remedy that problem.
For a film as long as this one, you'll be hard pressed to notice the time. It flies by at such a rapid pace, I wish I could have sat through a second screening. Also, a lot happens. (To be addressed later.)
There is something I'd like to address, which doesn't spoil anything. Black Widow. I never cared for this character and was disappointed to hear she would even be in this film. The Russo Bros proved me very wrong. Suddenly, I'm thinking I would enjoy a solo film just with this character. Even with ScarJo, who is not my favorite actress.
In my opinion, this film satisfied my inner-comic book geek. Chris Evans is just perfect in the role. He personifies Cap in ways that shocked me, especially considering his earlier role as Human Torch. The cast were serious about making a great flick and it shows.
Damn, it's really hard to write this review without spoiling anything.
If give this film an easy 5/5. Bonus marks even just for the mid and end credits. Actually, just for the Winter Soldier. This guy needs a solo film ASAP! You guys have nothing to worry about with this film. The Russo bros got it all right. Very right. Captain America right... um... yeah.
