Nine Things I Hope to See in Captain America: The First Avenger

I. “Captain” America
There’s a reason he’s not called Buck Private America, and that is that aside from being the epitome of human physical potential, he is also a highly trained, highly capable, military bred leader and resourceful tactician with experience in leading men during one of the worst periods of modern history. This should be given due focus, more so than any shield-tossing shenanigans.

Who will lead the Avengers is a question that is up in the air. Iron Man led them early on in the comics, and Downey definitely has the most star power of the cast thus far. Then again Stark’s characterization in his own series shows him pretty far from being the leader-type, so maybe Nick Fury will lead the Avengers himself, but whoever it, its important to at least set up the eventuality of Captain America leading he Avengers by showing him as leader capable of commanding a bunch of disparate characters.

II. The ‘40’s
I’m a bit of a 1940s/WWII enthusiast, so I hope to see a few of the political and cultural figures of the time. I wish to see something like Rogers sharing the stage with Bob Hope at a USO show, or Roosevelt asking Rogers to rise to the occasion, or Patton chewing him out… etc. Kind of like the opening montage of Watchmen, but spread over a few scenes, or like Forrest Gump in WWII.

III. The Howling Commando
The Howling Commandos are confirmed as part of the movie, as an elite unit commanded by Steve Rogers himself. However, to date the only original Howling Commando that has been cast is Neal McDonough as Dum-Dum Dugan. Bucky can be reasonably be expected to be part of the unit as well, and other rumored members are Jacques Dernier and Jim Morita, allies of the Howling Commandos in the comic books but not actual members, as well a Montgomery Falsworth, who curiously enough doesn’t seem to be Union Jack but rather seems to be a regular soldier, a member of the British 1st Airborne, and very similar in appearance to actual Howling Commando Pinky Pinkerton.

I don’t know what to make of that, honestly. But I hope there’s more of the original Howling Commandos than just Dugan such as Dino Manelli and Rebel Ralston. The 6 second clip from a while ago shows a group of at least nine soldiers following Captain America, that included Dugan and Falsworth. That leaves room for at least four other Howlers.

IV. The genesis of SHIELD and the modern HYDRA
In a previous article I speculated that we would see the founding of SHIELD or at least the prototype for SHIELD, the Strategic Scientific Reserve. I hope I was right, and I also hope we would see Hydra surviving to wreak havoc another day, as I think they’d make a better adversary for the Avengers than Skrulls. Let’s see for instance that Zemo and/or Strucker are introduced in a cameo as high ranking members of Hydra who escape to South America, much like several real-life Nazi war criminals did, to found a new independent HYDRA.

V. Run of the mill Nazis
The main antagonists are going to be Hydra troops. I’m alright with that as – and this is something a lot of people keep forgetting – Hydra will be presented as a Nazi organization that ends up going rogue. That’s a satisfying direction that will help set up an adversary of SHIELD. I, however, still hope to see Captain America duke it out with soldiers of the SS or Whermacht, if even for one scene.

VI. Battles
Somewhat related to the above. I tink Cap’s exploits will be more of the secret agent/adventurer type of affair, but I do hope we see Cap fighting in an all-out battle during the war. Now, there’s a limit to what they can have in a PG13 rated film, so I doubt we’ll see Captain America giving Imperial Japanese troops what for, but something like the opening montage of X-Men Origins: Wolverine would be cool. Wouldn't it be sweet to see Captain America running up Omaha Beach, shield in one hand and a belt-fed Browning machinegun in the other, while Samuel L. Jackson runs up a distance behind him saying "I have had it with these mother******* Nazis on this mother******* beach"?

VII. A partial disregard for The Incredible Hulk
The portrayal of Cap’s power levels has varied, though supposedly the peak of human potential, some have gone as far as have him go toe-to-toe with Giant Man or jump out of an airplane without a parachute. The Incredible Hulk portrayed Blonsky getting the super-soldier treatment that enables him to recover from a life-endangering injury in less than a day. That’s just too powerful. What I think makes Cap badass is that while he did get handed considerable abilities on a silver platter, it was only a tool he had to augment with training and skill. He was strong, but still vulnerable enough that when he fought, it mattered that he managed to get through it in one piece and win.

VIII. Cap and Bucky’s Bromance
This is a bit awkward, but I’ve always felt that the most significant relationship Rogers was ever a part in, much more than any he can had with any love interest, was his friendship with Bucky. Sebastian Stan alluded to “Band of Brothers” as an inspiration, which is a pretty bromantic show, so I think that’s covered. Remember, it’s guy love, there’s nothing gay about it.

IX. A Joe Simon cameo
Joe Simon co-created Captain America with Jack Kirby, and is the only one of the two still alive. Stan Lee will likely get a cameo, and he has left his mark so perhaps he should, but give credit where credit’s due. Joe Simon deserves his own moment on the big screen.

Teabag @ You should check out Any Human Heart then - we get to see them there ;o)

As for the list - could not agree more!!! With you 100%

As for the Joe Simon cameo - would be great to seem him BUT remember the actual first edition of the Captain America comic ACTUALLY exists in this universe (it was seen in Tony Starks box of memorabilia) so even if he doesn't appear in the film he should get a MAJOR name check.

They may even have a young actor portraying him as he would have been in 1941 designing the comic for the USO.

One thing CA fans will probably find disappointing in the Avengers movie is that CA will probably not be the team leader in this movie. It will be Iron Man for several reasons:

1: Steve Rogers will be a man out of time and thus will be inappropriate to lead.

2: Star power. Robert Downey jr will be the major star of this movie and will be pushed to the forefront more than the others. In fact I suspect Stark's character arc will be about dumping his more typical flamboyant loner style and becoming a serious and dependable team leader.

3: The current Avengers cartoon (which is AWESOME!) has iron Man as the leader.

marvel72 @ I think that that scenario with the Hulk and Loki will play out as well.

I am sure that capturing the Hulk and bringing him into the fold will be a large part of The Avengers film. Maybe thats why they want to recruit Thor - because he is one of the few guys who could go up against him (especially if Loki is involved)??

After that first act the rest of the film will be about The Avengers coming together and defeating a huge threat. Basically HYDRA are an evil version of SHIELD and when you think about the name 'the avengers' it kind of suggests that they would go up against an old foe 'to avenge' their wrongs.

Coldblood6 @ I see your points about Stark BUT at the moment Fury doesn't even trust him to wear the suit - let alone lead the team - so I don't think it is a foregone conclusion.

When you look at it NONE of the main avengers (except Hulk who probably doesn't want ANYTHING to do with the idea) would want to follow rather than lead. In fact that all have strong arguments to be chosen as field leader.

That is going to be the main theme of the film - Fury getting them to work together and convincing them that they should join the team.

I'm kind of interested to see what they do with Hawkeye in this - I hope he is more than just another SHIELD agent who wants to bang Blackwidow.

@ marvel72 I agree, the movie can learn alot from the show.

Iron Man is the leader in the animated series because Cap is a newcomer. They aren't going to make him a leader over night. He'll eventually be the leader.

Same with the movie, I don't think he'll automatically be given the reins of leadership right off the bat.

Forrest Gump fought in Vietnam not WW2!

Great list!
In regard to EMH, I'm hoping Cap will eventually become the leader. They've recently shown him advising Iron Man and taking a more important role. In the Avengers movie, I want to see Cap adjusting to the new environment and rising to become the leader the team needs. I'm just hoping that the popularity of Iron Man and Downey's star power won't make them put Iron Man as the leader.

First of all after the IM2 tony stark isn't even wanted on the team, fury hates him clearly. second Iron Man WAS the leader of Avengers for a while even after cap came back, but cap eventually grew in to the role, some thing like that probably will happen. More importantly I want to see the avengers to separate away from shield by the end of the movie and become Independent.

Great article by the way, it's nice that you pointed out that Hydra are not replacing the Nazi's there a faction of the party that goes rogue

Damn, I wish it was July...that way Thor and Cap would both be out!

For that matter I wish it was May '12. That way Avengers, Cap and Thor would all be out.

@ Orphix

Those are good points but I think my own, especially the starpower of RDJ, will prevail.

@ CordogBurglar

I doubt CA will be leader at all in this first film. Maybe by the second or third Avengers film. Even with Marvel in charge, Hollywood is Hollywood, and the monetary factors will take precedence. RDJ will be the foremost character in the Avengers and probably team leader.

@ Exiles

I would not say that Fury hates Tony Stark. My personal feeling is that since Tony's father is a founding member of SHIELD he wants Tony to be in and even lead the Avengers. What he needs is Tony to grow up a bit and I think he is using a bit of reverse pcychology on him.

PS. Isn't this GREAT!?! We are debating plot details and character arcs about an upcoming AVENGERS movie. WOW!!!

Coldblood6 - 2/2/2011, 4:29 AM
Going back to the original topic of this article for a moment (LOL), I have to say that the thing I really want to see is spectacular fight scenes with Captain America versus multiple enemies. I want to see some truly spectacular fight choreography with a wide variety of awesome uses of the shield including throwing and ricocheting, bashing, swiping, uppercutting, etc., etc. It has to look truly amazing such that when we get this baby on DVD we're gonna be watching those scenes over and over!

Orphix - 2/2/2011, 7:54 AM
Coldblood @ For my choice out out of the 9 suggestions I wanna see quite a bit of the Howling Commados and hope they have individual personalities, etc.

I also wanna see them in a HUGE battle in which not all of them make it.

I know this film is about Captain America - but I still wanna see some good supporting roles.

I think the fact that Cap is referenced as the first avenger might suggest a big character (apart from Erskine) might get bumped off halfway thru the movie - so that cap can go and avenger them. Peggy Carter or Bucky perhaps??
MaddMonkk
MaddMonkk - 2/2/2011, 10:39 AM
I think the leadership position will be the starting point for the tension between Cap and Iron Man. These fellers don't like each other very too much right now and I hope they show that in the movies. I think Iron Man will be leader and Cap take charge later on. maybe.
Coldblood6
Coldblood6 - 2/2/2011, 10:59 AM
I think everyone is making valid points about the leadership question. I'll still put my money on Tony Stark but I could be wrong. Either Cap or Tony would be fine by me. We'll just have to wait and see.

Here's a question that has been bothering me recently. At the end of Iron Man I, Nick Fury talks to Tony Stark and effectively mentions that he's not the only superhero out there and there is an Avengers initiative. But when you look at the CMU structure Thor had not appeared on Earth yet, CA has been 'dead' for decades, Hulk may of existed but certainly was not a superhero, and Black Widow and Hawkeye are at most trained SHIELD operatives.

So who were these other superheroes that existed in the MCU that inspired Nick Fury and SHIELD to create the Avengers initiative???
FrankGarret
FrankGarret - 2/2/2011, 11:49 AM
I realize RDJ is the biggest draw and thus could be expected to lead. And I'd be okay with that, but the following points stand...

Captain America could turn out to be as big as Iron Man. Who knows, maybe bigger.
Cap is the most recognizable Avengers leader.

Setting him up as a potential leader doesn't mean setting him to be the leader. It just means that should they ever choose to follow that avenue, the ground work would already be done.
FrankGarret
FrankGarret - 2/2/2011, 11:54 AM
@Coldblood6
There could have been lesser heros who had sprung out, that didn't quite make an impact but still galvanized SHIELD to start looking for heavy hitters.

Also, they could have foreign superheros. Remember in Fury's office at the end of Iron Man 2 there's references to Black Panther and Namor.
