Director Ben Wheatley (Free FireHigh Rise) appears to be ready to make the jump to studio features with an adaptation of Frank Miller and Geof Darrow's Hard Boiled. According to Deadline, Wheatley and Warner Bros. are working on acquiring the rights to the The Dark Horse mini-series, which follows Nixon the cyborg tax collector who is the only hope for his robot species' revolution. Miller and Darrow won the Eisner Award for Best Writer/Artist for their work in 1991.

Deadline also indicates that Wheatley is looking to reteam with his High-Rise star Tom Hiddleston for the film, presumably as Nixon.

In 2001, David Fincher and Nic Cage had their sights set on adapting the three-issue comic book and over the years a few other filmmakers have been attached to the project, including Frank Miller himself. Wheatley, a singular filmmaker with a background in darkly comic thrillers and horror films, is a fascinating choice for the material.

I haven't seen anything this guy's done, but apparently he has a fanbase. And Free Fire looks like fun, so this could be good.

NOICE. I hope this happens, but it just makes me think of what a shame it is that Miller turned into such a demented PoS. I love most of his work, but dang. .

Are you serious?!

Hard Boiled as a fvcking Hollywood movie?

Fvck.

Get ready for the least faithful Frank Miller adaptation of all time.

This book does not lend itself to film-adaptation at all.

Besides Wall-E already took one of the best ideas from the book and dumbed it down.

And what about the bit with the crazy-depraved public orgy in the cage.

Both Miller and Darrow were absolute madmen when they did that book. It's sensational! No way can you adapt this properly. It's actually not worth doing at all.

If they actually do it right, it will be banned.

So it's lose-lose, really.

If they really are seriously going to adapt Hard Boiled, though, ten I think they need to do two things:

1. Hire Frank for a bit of additional writing. In fact, just hire him to do the screenplay.
The book is not a film. It desperately needs adaptation. And expansion. And there's no point getting someone who is not Frank to adapt it, because then you're not doing a Frank Miller film anymore, so what was the point in acquiring the rights in the first place.
And nobody can "do" Frank Miller. Brian Azzarello's been failing miserably at that with every single issue of DKIII: The Master Race, so far. Only Frank is Frank. He's too distinctive to ape.

2. Get Darrow on board as a production designer. The Matrix had excellent art direction. The sequels all looked like TV commercials.

But really, wouldn't Big Guy and Rusty, the Boy Robot be a much safer choice?
