Captain America is secretly a HYDRA villain and Dr. Manhattan is possibly the creator of the DC Universe, so it's no wonder that the death of Superman has flown under the radar. His demise has been on the cards for a while, but after defeating a deranged man imbued with his solar flare energy, a year of being exposed to the fire pits of Apokolips and attempting to regain his stolen powers by bathing himelf in Kryptonite finally took its toll on the Man of Steel and he perished in the arms of Wonder Woman as his body cosumed itself from within. The following took place in Superman #52:
Chances are that the New 52 Superman isn't even the real Man of Steel (you can find more on that theory by clicking here), but the original DC Universe's Superman is going to take over the role regardless.
