COMICS: Geoff Johns On The Difference Between JUSTICE LEAGUE And JLA

Geoff Johns writer of DC Comics' Justice League and the forthcoming Justice League of America discusses the difference between the two superhero teams. Are you intrigued by the JLA's roster that includes Martian Manhunter and Vibe, among others?

There have been a lot of different Justice League teams over the years, Justice League International, Justice Society of America, Justice League Elite and a bevy of other super-derivatives. Recently, Justice League International ended its New 52 run but not too long after, DC Comics announced Justice League of America. The team features a lineup comprised of some very unusual choices in the likes of Vibe, Katanna and Catwoman to name a few. In fact, aside from Martian Manhunter, it wouldn't be a stretch to say this roster is 'Justice League International 2.0' with the amount of underdogs on the team. If you've been reading Johns' work on Justice League then you have a vague sense of why the JLA comes together but below the writer himself describes what the team is about and how it differs from the team composed of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and co.

"JLA" is set to be a very different book from "Justice League." What I wanted to do was create two different books with extremely different viewpoints. "Justice League" is all about the world's greatest heroes. They are established as the world's greatest heroes already and stand shoulder-to-shoulder. Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Superman, Batman and the rest are already there. They have a status. So "Sword of Atlantis" is about doing the biggest character story we can possibly do with them with the biggest possible threats. That's what that book will continue to be with Ivan and Joe.

On the flipside, you have "JLA" which is really about exploring potential that's not yet realized. It's all about exploring the potential of heroes who are underrated or undervalued and not quite perceived as the A-list. And it's about Steve Trevor's determination to turn them into that. Vibe gets called out a lot because he's a very unlikely character. And that's fine. We've also got the new Green Lantern and Hawkman and Katana. Where are these characters going to go? We know that at the end of the day, Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman are going to be around. But at the end of the day, we don't know what direction these guys will take. Are they going to make it on the team? What will they evolve into – or devolve into in the case of one of them? So "JLA" is really becoming it's own beast – a different thematic world of the B and C-List where as "Justice League" is strictly A."

Justice League of America #1, from David Finch and Geoff Johns, debuts Feb. 6, 2013.

Can't we switch Martian Manhunter with Cyborg. Manhunter deserves is one of the founding members of the Justice League.

Cyborg is there because they needed a black character. They can word it however, but thats the honest truth. I think cyborg should have stayed on the teen titans. He just doesnt belong on the justice league.

I would have replaced Vibe, Catwoman, Katana with Black Canary, Firestorm and Vixen.

Dang whats up with all the hate on Cyborg, he's a pretty cool character in my opinion, he still hasn't had his time to shine yet in the Justice League book but given time he will, he's also very convenient.

[frick]ing put Manhunter back in the JL with all the other A-listers, you dickhead.
And as for Catwoman in JLA? I'm with LEVITIKUZ.

Catwoman is more of an anti-hero, but a non-A-lister? I can see Martian Manhunter and Cyborg not being A-listers considering they don't have the level of popularity as Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman; but Catwoman?

Anyway, please give Manhunter Cyborg's place on JL.

Catwoman should be solo..not a team player, but shes hot so theres that.

What bugs me is that they use crappy Vibe & not a better character.

Instead of wasting effort trying to make Vibe cool DC ruins a great character like Blue Devil with his recent new incarnation.

Need to bring Blue Devil back to his original & put him & Black Lightning on JLA.

The Justice League reboot is ridiculous. Each issue takes about ten minutes to read, and contains so many splashes of color and full pictures that instead of being DC’s premiere comic it feels like a 2D Michael Bay movie.

Lame writer.

@Froggy

He was a co-producer.

He's not exactly innocent or ignorant about the results of the production.

@Froggy- While I would like Manhunter back on the JL because he has a great dynamic with the League, I can see why he's not on the team. If he is as powerful as people claim him to be, then he would be best suited to lead a team.

In fact, I have a way of keeping both sides happy. Have Manhunter be the leader of the JL.

MM is basicly Batman and Superman combined. You want to replace them so MM can rejoin the team? No? Then stfu. He'd just stand in the back eating cookies and be boring and never get a title if we put him in JL. People don't understand.

Yes.

You know, no one can say: 'OMG, I'm just a producer... I don't have NOTHING to do with this'.

Whatever the outcome, as a producer he's part of the process.

Stan Lee is often credited as a producer or even executive producer on the marvel films. Lots of times that's just a meaningless gesture and the individuals have 0 say on the film.

Yes - Stan Lee's role as a producer in Marvel movies is much more a 'hommage' than anything else.

But Stan Lee is an exception, obviously.

'Excelsior!'

they created this roster so they could establish a jla without superman, batman, and wonder woman. they hope they can do the movie this way if the book is popular enough. the big 3 trio are hard characters for them to work with

I love the fact that Johns is bringing Hawkman back to at least one of the leagues. He's always been criminally underutilized, despite being one of DC's best B-listers. He's also a personal favorite. Johns had a great run on his previous arc with the character, so I'm interested to see where this goes

hmmm...i think they should call THIS new team jlM for Justice League of MINORITIES. you got the arab, the black, the latino, the women...it reads like Obama's key voters that won him the election...lol.

seriously, though...if we go by the name..BATMAN belongs here, and J'onn and the new GL should take his place alongside Diana and Kal-El.

lastly...yeah..i wish Geoff's regime would END soon over at DC. dcU needs a huge overhaul.
