COMICS: Scott Lobdell And Brett Booth Explain Addition Of Gay Character To Teen Titans!

The quotes below were posted by Teen Titans artist, Brett Booth, and spotted by Bleeding Cool. The first group of text is how writer Scott Lobdell described the gay character in the script, while the lengthier one below that is Booth's reaction to the criticism, explaining in detail the decisions behind the creation and personality of "Bunker". Oh, and there's also a first look at the new superhero in full costume.

His real name is Miguel Jose Barragan. He was raised in a very small Mexican village called El Chilar. He was very loved by his family and the village as well — and they were as accepting of his homosexuality as they were to his super powers when they first manifested. To that end he grew up in an angst-free environment. He was born out of the closet and so he has a very refreshing outlook on life.

So Bunker has been out of both closets since the get go. Why the more flamboyant look? Well it’s complicated. I’ve seen all the other gay superheroes out there, Ok maybe not all. They look just like regular heterosexuals, they act like regular heterosexuals, they just happen to have sex with people of their own gender, under the covers and in the dark. Sure you might get a kiss on a page, but that’s all (an no we won’t be doing any sex scenes in TT, get your minds OUT of the gutters;)

We wanted to show an interesting character who’s homosexuality is part of him, not something that’s hidden. Sure they are gay people who you wouldn’t know are gay right off the bat, but there are others who are a more flamboyant, and we thought it would be nice to actually see them portrayed in comics. Did we go over the top, I don’t think so. I wanted you to know he might be gay as soon as you see him. Our TT is partly about diversity of ANY kind, its about all kinds of teens getting together to help each other. It is a very difficult line to walk, will he be as I’ve read in some of the comments ‘fruity’? Not that I’m aware of. Will he be more effeminate than what we’ve seen before, the ‘typical’ gay male comic character, yes. Does it scare the shit out of me that I might inadvertently piss off the group I want to reflect in a positive way, you’re damn straight (pun intended!)

The Pink shirt has been changed to blue, it’s only pink because his costume is actually showing a bit, we didn’t want too many different colors. But I think the blue works just as well. I would have used that image but I don’t know if I got that change in my files…

As for the children.. Most simply don’t know or don’t care. It’s not like Migg’s is going to be doing a one man gay pride parade. I don’t think we even mention that he’s gay, you see him, you know it, no need to harp on about it. He’s just a happy fun loving guy! He won’t be wearing anything that I haven’t seen at Walmart. Well maybe Target;)

Well, this makes me feel a lot better. I have zero problem with the addition of a gay character to Teen Titans (one of the many relaunched titles I plan on picking up) but the fact he won't be portrayed as over the top and "fruity" as we were led to believe is bound to ensure that Bunker doesn't become a tedious and cliched character to read - a concern I believe the majority of the backlash focused on. I guess we'll find out when the book goes on sale next week...

"Bunker"? Is tis some kind of joke? And he dresses in a fruity purple outfit? I would be insulted if I was gay.

Did they put Bunker's head next to Robin's crotch intentionally?

There are a lot of great gay characters, this just doesn't look like it. Diversity for the sake of diversity is worse than no diversity at all.

There are gay flamboyant people, so I don't have a problem with DC featuring a 'stereotypical' gay man (although the typical gay man really does act mostly like the typical straight man).

I don't really agree with the attitude that being flamboyant means that Bunker's sexuality is more a part of him. I kinda find that insulting.

Being gay doesn't mean you're flamboyant and being straight doesn't mean you can't be flamboyant.

But it all depends how the character is portrayed in the actual comic book and for that, we'll have to wait and see.

@MrEko that's exactly what Lobdell is saying: there are many manly gay characters, not a more obviously gay one. The first article on him made it look like he'd have a lisp and all those stereotypical stuff.

Now, it seems he'll just be a bit more obviously gay than those characters you named.

I was really just hoping that the comic wouldn't "Micahel Bay" the gay character, and use his flamboyance as comic relief.

I bet he likes Robin kicking the sh*t out of him! What's his super powers? Looks like he's wearing giant clear colored hulk hands! All joking aside though it'll be interesting to see how this character does.

Superheros are supposed to represent whats good and moral. Sex should not be involved period. Comics used to be for kids and adults alike. Now all these butthole writers are screwing up the characters we all love with political agendas. Heros should be honorable, sex is a adult topic and has no business in stories kids read.

@MovieTheaterLad

Which is why this could be a good thing, but I am given pause by the suggestion that someone being flamboyant means that their homosexuality is more a part of them.

That'd be the wrong message to send.

But if he is portrayed as a character that is flamboyant and gay, then I look forward to seeing him become part of the greater DC universe.

I don't mind the gay character, but I do think the designs of the new characters are mostly bad...including this one.
But seeing how Lobdell caught everyone off-guard with how good Superboy was, I have now more than ever hope for this book and as a Titan fan will of course buy it.

I'm down for more gay characters, but I groaned when I saw that costume.

Still, MovieTheaterLad has a point. All other openly-gay heroes in comics that I've read about so far are quite "normal". They don't have any sort of gay flair to them, and such flamboyance represents quite a number of that demographic.

I may think the costume is crap, but I'll support this character.

Guys he's not that stereotypical, that costume is way too tacky for a gay guy.

The whole DCnU is badly designed. There's not one redesign that works better than what the character was wearing prior to Flashpoint.

Just look at Tim's brazilian carnival costume...

It feels weird. I don't mind him being gay. I don't mind him being flamboyant. I don't mind the implied implication that there are some flambouyant gay men however that to be flambouyant you presumably are gay. I don't even mind the look and costume. Seen worse. Its comics. At worst it only feels a bit 90s. A bit Leifeldy extreme in the pallete department. I don't even mind that while we should look at him and think 'homosexual' and that it is meant to be an integral part of his character we are equally not going to be directly told about his homosexuality that much. They wont 'harp on about it'. Which seems to just be missed valid character development regardless of sexuality.

The only thing that bugs me about this article is the poll itself. Its either 'this is awesome' or 'such a bad idea I wont buy' this just perpetuates the stereotype (which isnt wholly untrue) that comic fans are not discerning or balance minded. Its either black or white for us it seems. Apparently we can't weigh up pros and cons and come to a well rounded sentiment. We either swear and shout at people who disagree and demand the death or certain creators with us or constantly cheer a creator's name regardless of what the put out.

Can't we get a few more options like we do in some other polls please. Lets not encourage what I refer to as 'fanboyism'. Lets just be consumers of a certain medium who don't have to be mindless sycophants/psychopaths.

Other than that the character doesnt do much for me but I think thats more to do with the general tone of the comic thus far. I'll give it a look anyway.

I think the wings make more sense for NightWING. I don't like the new Nightwing costume, but Tim looks like 10 times better now.

About Bunker, like I said on the other story, they don't need to be afraid of making him too gay. There's nothing wrong with it and people say they are bothered but I bet they'll still get the issues, regardless.

That said read MovieTheatreLad. That is your reasoning people. That is the sole justification for the character you need right there: Is the point to get people to connect with a character? Yes. Is that what they are trying to do? Yes. Will some people feel connection to a character like this? OBVIOUSLY YES! Do I know if it will be played well or not? Sadly no...

If Bunker comes to the big screen, john leguizamo or kevin alejandro would be my picks. The only problem i have with this character so far is his name. Bunker? Maybe it'll make sense once we find out what exactly his powers are and his origin.

AmibuoslyGAY- that really isn't fair man. I appreciate that it can be misleading but if you read the article and comments you'll see that they are intentionally portraying the kind of gay person who does wear pink and admitting they know he is a particular kind of person. He is flambouyantly gay thats why he wears pink. The flambouyancy. Not an automatic response to his sexuality. Also to say you need to be someone/have done something to write that particular thing means they would be alot of dull literature around. You need to hope the writer has an imagination and has done research. Those are the tools of any good writer and in a way you are being a tad judgemental of what that man ought to be allowed to do based on his sexuality, so you may wanna rethink that attitude. Not having a go or attacking you just saying how that statement can be read.

Lets hope it IS writer well rather than assuming it wont be.
