REVIEW: The Multiversity #1

REVIEW: The Multiversity #1

Mysterious monsters threaten the existence of all creation, requiring heroes from a multitude of earths in different universes to team up together to stop the menace before it annihilates all in existence. Sounds like classic Morrison, but was it really as good as the hype? Hit the jump for the full review!

Summary

Mysterious monsters threaten the existence of all creation, requiring heroes from a multitude of earths in different universes to team up together to stop the menace before it annihilates all in existence.

What I Liked

✔Very sci-fi feel, something similar in tone to Jonathan Hickman's work

✔Loved the idea of comics being a window into different realities and universes

✔Interesting characters

✔Good line work and rich colors

✔Decent dialogue

What I Didn’t Like

✘Typical Morrison plot, which means it was confusing and tough to read

✘Requires several rereads so its time consuming

✘Plot was scattered

✘The issue was busy, but nothing really happened

✘Poked fun of Marvel characters, didn't bother me but might bother some die-hard fans

Score   5/10

I'm not a big Morrison fan, but I will admit that when he is REALLY good, then I can get into it (All Star Superman, 52). All in all I thought Multiversity #1 was pretty solid.

The story is definitely weird and very Morrison-esque, but not bizarre enough that it was as hard to follow as this review seems to be stressing. And those first few really weird pages with Nix pay off nicely on the last page.

The rest of the issue nicely introduces an epic story with a big cast of other-earth characters, what's not to like about that? Again, it's still a bit Morrison weird, like the musical-vibration-travel, but the dialogue is mostly on point, and still not as far-fetched as a lot of his stuff.

Oh, and the art is Reis, it's nothing less than amazing. I'm definitely going to be reading more, a solid 7/10 from me.

@nibs

Morrison is hit and miss for me, and this was a miss. I just didn't care for it and it and it consumed too much time trying to sort out the mess that was the story.

It's not my thing, and unless issue 2 is better, I'm dropping it. There are better DC books I'd rather be reading. Morrison is an acquired taste, but if you liked it, that's awesome. You are likely the target audience!

@nibs I'm confused, where does this take place within the New 52? Calvin Ellis was seen in Action Comics #10-or-9 I believe yet I've heard many say this isn't technically part of The New 52. Timeline confuses the hell out of me.

That seems to be Morrison's schtick as a writer. Confuse the hell out of everyone and to make himself seem smarter lol.

Just kidding. He's just got a very unique style of storytelling and it didn't mesh with me.

As far as timeline....no clue. Just as confused as you lol.

@phronesis
It seems canon to me, and nobody has told me otherwise.

It mostly takes place in The Bleed on Harbinger's watchtower, and while we haven't seen anyone from Prime Earth, the story goes to Earth 7, Earth 23 (Calvin Ellis), and then ends on Earth 8 (Marvel Universe spoof). Confusing-timeline free!

Morrison is hit or miss for me too. In fact, he's almost always a miss. His stuff is just too weird, often to the point where it doesn't make sense, or there's too much emphasis on a metaphor as opposed to the actual story and it just comes off as ridiculous.

But I have to disagree about this story being too messy, I really didn't find it required multiple reads and it seemed a little more traditional than a lot of his work. I will say that for the amount of dialogue it doesn't seem like much happens, but as a first issue I don't think it needed to, and what aspects it did set up worked well.

But I do get where you're coming from and based on your review here, you definitely are not the target audience.

And of course, it's only issue 1, Morrison still has lots of time to garbage the story up!

Jut got done reading it, I thoroughly enjoyed it, however. Interested to see where the story goes. Pretty cool how the breaking of the fourth wall interacts with the readers. Still a bit confused. Mostly on the whole Space-demons and earth-7 parts.

Earth-8 was pretty cool, haha.

Also, I agree with you. The part about how Carrot iterate's that one's fiction is another's reality, or how comics are a messaged bottle of a neighboring Universe. Awesome stuff right there.

I liked it. It was enough to hook me for a few more issues at least to see what happens. I feel like you'll have to read this just for the payoff when it ends next April on the anniversary of Crisis on Infinite Earths. It's definitely leading up to something huge.

I enjoyed it.
It felt like the start of a new "Crisis".
Definitely interested in seeing where this is going.

I don't care much for "New 52" But I don't know how I would feel if this is the start of a new companywide reboot.
