ABC Gets Behind Potential Marvel Series

ABC Gets Behind Potential Marvel Series

According to TVline.com, Paul Lee, ABC President, is excited about the connection between the network and Marvel in terms of potential TV series based on the publishers' titles, among them, of course, the Hulk and Jessica Jones.

Says Lee, “We would love to make a Marvel franchise work on the network."

The site adds, "Lee reiterated that he was 'thrilled' by the prospect of hosting Marvel series, citing the showrunners attached to the two adaptations currently in development — Twilight scribe Melissa Rosenberg is working on AKA Jessica Jones, while filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro (Hellboy) and Battlestar Galactica‘s David Eick are shepherding a reboot of The Hulk."

Notes Lee, "I’m thrilled we have Marvel within our family, it’s a superb opportunity for us. If you’re going to bring back a franchise, it’s easier to launch a well-known franchise, but what really distinguishes these are the showrunners — we have A-list showrunners.”

Potentially these two concepts would be ready to go as series for this fall, and Lee points out that there could be others moving forward as well.

Yea DC need to pick up the slack and try new things with more characters, don't understand what's taking them so long.
I guess they want to focus on the films at the minute organising GL and Flash along with Bats and Supes.

But saying that you can count on Marvel to deliver doesn't exactly apply to their animated films.
Yes they deliver them, but the majority of what they're delivering sucks balls.

Considering that Green Lantern comes out this summer, Flash is on the fast track, and Superman is in pre-production, that motto is neither relevant nor true. This Marvel vs DC shit is getting annoying as hell. If you confine yourself to one thing, be it comics or whatever, you will never be a well rounded individual. You gotta branch out, or else you run the risk of missing out on some pretty cool stuff.

I completely agree with MatchesMalone. I use to think Marvel was all that, but here lately, I've found a lot of their stuff kinda meh. I do love a lot of their stuff, just here lately, haven't been impressed. I decided to give some DC comics a shot, and I've been very impressed. They have some great characters on their side. I'll list a few that aren't as well known that should be. Lobo, The Question, Booster Gold, Green Arrow, Nightwing, etc.

When people (like marvel72) post, all I can think is, "wow, what a condescending douchebag." (:

@Vermillion- I'm glad other people think like that besides me. I just don't understand why these threads always degenerate into which company is better. I mean, not for nothing, but my comic book collection has comics from Marvel, DC, Oni Press, Slave Labor Graphics, Antartic Press, Dynamite, DDP, etc. No real comic book fan would put down or wish failure on a COMIC BOOK COMPANY! If that isn't cutting off your nose to spite your face, I don't know what is.

Especially since comic books in general aren't selling as well as they use to. If a comic book is good, I don't care who it's by, I'll read it. (Been reading some Green Hornet here lately, definitely want to get a few more.)

What we need is a Mutant x tv show or a Generation X on ABC.with the same writers and directors from heroes.

adding to MatchesMalone's comments, I agree they should branch out to other opportunity's. I hear Renewable energy is big right now. They should get the Hulk to be the Spokesperson for Green Energy for some Energy Supplier and get Green Lantern for a competitor.

Leave no opportunity untouched!

I think TV should be the main focus for comic/superhero properties. These characters and their stories inevitably get butchered and belittled in the face of the need to tell them within a couple of hours, not to mention the necessity to water them down and make them interesting and relevant to the average, non-comic-reading moviegoer.

TV is the perfect match for the episodic storytelling of the monthly comic book.

For instance, I'd much rather see a weekly live action Batman series where the world can really be established and explored, with different toned episodes (horror, action, detective mystery, etc.) to show how multi-faceted the character is. Same for Superman or Spiderman, or any other characters from the A-list of either company.

Your typical viewer who doesn't read comics could still get all of the cool back story, nuance and detail that makes us all love comics so much, in a very organic way, so that it captivates them and keeps them watching.

Feature-length movies -- regardless of how lovingly they are rendered -- are always sort of shorthand versions of something we all think could be bigger and better, seeming like they are just beginning when the end credits roll.

How cool would it be if that story just picked up where it left off the following week? It could be done with the right broadcasters (which means cable, NOT the commercial-break-enslaved majors).

They could still turn some of the more landmark graphic novels into feature films (although, really, I think those should be TV miniseries).

I personally think it's a big mistake NOT to be doing superheros this way.

i read the following books from dc.

-green lantern
-the flash
-brightest day
-the big event story i.e 52,blackest night, final crisis

but i prefer marvel so what, all dc have made is four good batman films & two good superman films & thats it.

granted the "green lantern" maybe good & is something different for a change, but where is the likes of

-flash
-wonder woman
-captain marvel
-lobo
-justice league

nowhere to be seen because they rely too much on "batman" & "superman".

I would ask you to Name the GREAT Marvel movies that have come out... None of them match up with either of Nolan's films... I can name more crappy Marvel films than I can DC, and yes the FOX studios versions count.

Im still waiting on a Nightwing show myself...C'Mon DC!

@ josepetrelli12

i said they were good what more do you want ?

batman begins & the dark knight aren't comic booky enough they're something else if you know what i mean.

superman the movie is probably the best dc comic book film.

watchmen & v for vendetta are amazing films, but don't share the same universe as batman & superman, hold on a minute nore does batman & superman.

dc does release a lot of shit i.e catwoman,jonah hex,superman 3 & 4,superman returns & steel.

my favorite marvel films are

1.spider-man 2
2.iron man
3.the incredible hulk
4.x-men 2 (had its moments)
5.blade

"I can name more crappy Marvel films than I can DC, and yes the FOX studios versions count"

Where the hell do you get that logic from? You do realize that Marvel has ZERO creative control over the movies that FOX makes. Imagine if someone were to say to you "Jonathan Swift makes poor movies because the Jack Black comedy Gulliver's Travels was a poor movie." You'd probably laugh at them. Now compare that statement to what you've just said...

Sorry to burst your bubble, but the FOX movies have virtually nothing to do with Marvel and should not even be considered as far as Marvel's track record is concerned. The only movies that you can fairly and accurately judge Marvel on are Iron Man 1 & 2, The Incredible Hulk, Thor, and Captain America: The First Avenger.

Wow, you guys! Marvel and DC have both done live action TV shows. Some were good, some weren't. They've been doing it for years.

Marvel:
Spiderman
The Incredible Hulk

DC:
The Adventures of Superman
Batman
Wonder Woman
Superboy
The Flash
Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman
Birds of Prey
Smallville

I think Marvel has done more, I just can't think of any off hand. They should absolutely do a live action X-Men series. Outstanding opportunity for an ensemble cast.
