Marvel Comics Unveils Jaw-Dropping Artgerm Cover Showing BLACK WIDOW In Her Original Costume

Long before she became an iconic Avenger, Natasha Romanoff debuted in the pages of Tales of Suspense #52 as the definitive comic book femme fatale.

Now, 60 years later, Marvel Comics is celebrating her incredible legacy - along with her frequent partner Hawkeye - in Black Widow & Hawkeye. Written by Stephanie Phillips (Contest of Chaos) and illustrated by Paolo Villanelli (Captain Marvel: Dark Tempest), the series promises fans a fresh, action-packed present-day adventure for the duo while also diving into their espionage and secretive pasts.

To mark the occasion, best-selling cover artist Stanley "Artgerm" Lau has depicted Natasha in her original costume for an all-new variant cover for issue #1. Although Natasha is currently bonded to a symbiote, it's been confirmed today that we'll also see the hero depicted with her classic look within the pages of this comic.

However, the story will still play off recent developments, including what we've seen from "Widow" in Venom recently.

The eyes of a Hawk and the venom of a Widow! Even when Black Widow and Hawkeye had no one to trust, they still had each other - even though their paths sometimes diverged. So when Clint Barton is accused of a rogue assassination attempt that puts the U.S. and Madripoor at odds, a symbiote-equipped Natasha Romanoff thinks nothing of coming to his aid. But as echoes of their past ripple into the present, it will take all their faith in each other - and the lessons learned along the way - to protect their futures.

"I love getting the chance to dig deep with Natasha Romanoff and Clint Barton to tell a fast-paced spy story that celebrates their 60th anniversary," Phillips previously shared. "Nothing is as it seems, and I'm having a ton of fun writing these characters. Not to mention they both look great for 60."

As has become the norm with many Marvel Comics titles, Black Widow & Hawkeye will be a limited series that runs for only four issues. There was a time when pretty much everything was an ongoing series, though that often led to cancellations which disappointed fans as sales steadily declined the longer a comic book run progressed.

You can take a closer look at Artgerm's eye-catching variant cover for Black Widow & Hawkeye #1 below.

I hope one day we get to see this kind of golden age aesthetic in superhero movies.

The only movie I can think of that got close to it was Zack Snyder's Watchmen.

@Usernametaken - I actually think they should have, specially the DC universe, do the stories happening in the past. In the 70's, tops.

I really don't feel modern technologies work well with some aspects like secret identities and such. Any facial recognition SW would catch most heroes in a minute. Plus seeing them in that world would set the new movies apart from stuff we've been seeing lately. IMO the mid-late XX century was THE time for superhero stories.

@Usernametaken - I want Batman: Caped Crusader to have a Golden Age look. This Batman design would be perfect for an animated series.

@Repian - Darwyn Cooke's aesthetic would work beautifully, in my humble opinion...!☮🙂

Another modern comic book cover where the hero just poses like they're on the runway.

@GeneralZod - It sells though,I personally prefer action or horror covers, Bernie Wrightson or Neal Adams are my go to.

But tits sell.

@GeneralZod - ...I mean, have you seen women taking selfish? This is very much along the line of how they'd pose.

@Origame - Women take more selfy photos in the toilet than Men did when they went to the Moon.

@marvel72 - No objection -- it sells, 100%. And, at the end of the day, these artists are drawing to command top dollar in the original art market after their work is published. Sadly, it's not about drawing a cover that will get kids and teens to grab it off the spinner rack or LCS shelf because the cover is intriguing and provides a teaser of the story behind the cover.

@slickrickdesigns - that widget is one of the worst things about this site, next to Josh’s terrible writing skills and the shady ad tactics.

I wouldn’t have a problem with Josh trying to turn a profit through ads, but he doesn’t deserve to be paid for his shoddy writing until his writing gets better.

@DrSmoonk - blame the boring ai content generator for that, it’s stuck on opinion/bs mode.

"As has become the norm with many Marvel Comics titles, Black Widow & Hawkeye will be a limited series that runs for only four issues."

And that is why I just can't get back into reading modern comics. I can't make heads or tales of the reading order for back issues, so I just . . . don't read the new ones.

@ClintThaHamster - Also plenty of online guides or reading order for modern comics so that on it's own isn't too much of a problem. I have more an issue that it gives fake ammo for the 'they keep canceling' fools who are intentionaly ignoring short run story arcs are the norm now and do not relate to anything being unpopular or ditched.

All that said not often I read comics these days and when I do it is normaly the digital form ones and being able to dip my toes with a four issue story or the like now and again works well for me, get why it wouldn't for others esp with how oft characters crossover these days it seems. That or the compiled books for characters sort a few times over the last 15yrs where for obvious reasons them maybe having been a group of seperate short runs isn't a problem at all.

That is a neat look for her. Having the symbiote is certainly not neat though. Marvel comics hasn’t been interesting in years because all they want to do is unlimited variants and giving characters other characters’ status quos.

Independents and Manga FTW!
