Sony's "Spiderwomen"

Sony's "Spiderwomen"

Has Marvel already given us all the clues to who will lead Sony's Female CBM?!?

As  we all know, Sony has announced they will produce a female led Spiderman (woman) feature in 2017. The question is what character? Well, it appears Marvel may have already told us the answer to that question. Let’s dig in...

Back in June of 2014 the new rebooted Amazing Spider-man Vol.3 Number 1 hit the shelves and we were introduced to Cindy Moon. As the events of Original Sin play havoc across the Marvel universe we learned a few things about Miss Cindy. First, she is the first true "Spiderwoman". She was actually bitten by the same spider at Peter Parker and manifest similar powers as Peter. Although not as strong, she is faster and also has organic (A-la Raimi) web-shooters. I will spare you the complete background story, but have included a link to the Marvel Wiki that outlines her history and journey from Cindy Moon to the character "Silk". Why does this really matter? Well, Sony has rights to any characters tied to Peter Parker/Spiderman, meaning they would be able to produce "Silk" as a property.

Let’s look at her background story..which bear stricking similarity to Peters....

"When high school student Cindy Moon was attending a public exhibition demonstrating the safe handling of nuclear laboratory waste materials, sponsored by the General Techtronics Corporation, a spider irradiated by a particle accelerator used in the demonstration, bit Peter Parker in the hand and fell from his hand, it then bit Cindy in her ankle before dying"

A new relationship for Peter?!? This also is very well timed with the current film scenario....

"Almost immediately, the two began an extremely intimate relationship, surprising Anna at the apartment she shared with Peter. Strangely she felt threatened by the presence of Anna and told her forcibly to back off from Peter, though she later apologized. She later helped Spider-Man against Electro and the Black Cat when they attacked the television station that Peter was giving an interview at to promote his new humane Superhuman Prison."

And some already familiar Sonyverse Faces...

"Silk saved Spider-Man from being unmasked by the Black Cat in live TV, and escaped with him from the studio. Cindy later accompanied Peter to the demonstration of the technology to depower Electro being held in Waterfront, which was sabotaged by the Black Cat. In their costumed identities, Peter and Cindy fought the villains. Silk saved innocents from the machine gone haywire, and later protected Spider-Man and Electro from its explosion, which luckily depowered the villain."

This is made even more curious as Marvel’s Comics division appears to be reducing titles they have no cinematic rights to, Fantastic Four, why is Marvel ramping up their relationship with Sony? Sound off with your comments below!

@Gusto Well Jessica Drew raises another bigger spector...she is not part of SM universe, she is SHIELD..She would be PERFECT segway if Sony/Marvel reach a deal around the time of the max landis tweets..

Marvel allows for Drew (or creates this character), spiderman is part of MCU, and in turn Marvel can use Spiderman Villains (big monster rogues gallery) and maybe add him to Avengers 3. That theory would also explain the massive schedule shift...Tin foil hat off..:)

If everybody just had Spider powers we'd all have freaky, filthy, soul-damning spider sex on the ceilings and church steeples.

Thumbs up.

question can sony/fox use characters that where created after they bought the rights to the characters? after all silk was only just created so how can sony possibly claim ownership of the character?

@kinghulk I think they can. I seem to remember Avi Arad (for what he knows..lol) saying they could use Miles but wont. That has been my question for a while, but if Marvel Studios could use Miles (also created later on) i think they would have..

@ moth3r

I think you are missing the point.

Humanity doesn't hate and fear mutants simply because they are born with powers. They hate and fear them because of what they represent, which is the next stage in evolution. Eventually, all humans will be mutants. This scares humanity because they don't understand what mutants are.

I mean come on, the whole catch phrase for the X-Men comics since the friggin' 60's is, "People fear what they don't understand."

Its easy for them to like Spider-Man, or Captain America, or any other hero because they are normal humans that happened to get powers. They weren't born that way. They don't represent the next stage in evolution, and therefore, the eventual passing of an entire race of people.

This is a really intriguing idea! Unfortunately, I'm not sure it'll actually pan out this way in Sony's Spidey-verse. It could've, at some point, if the 'brilliant' masterminds behind all this could have bothered to actually plan things out ahead of time. They could've legitimately laid down the foundations for this to potentially happen by throwing in hints and leaving doors open in the actual movies....rather than making us fans rely on picking up these clues from the recent comics (which, I'm assuming, have nothing to do with the cinematic stuff that's going on right now).

I tend to agree that the female-led cbm (if it actually happens) is going to be Black Cat, because a bit of the groundwork has already been (somewhat) laid out for it to happen. Introducing Silk out of the blue would require a TON of ret-conning and revisionist history and all that, which I'm not particularly a fan of, and which I don't see Sony doing. Still, really good article though!

Hmmm I don't think they automatically have the rights to the character do they?
She is Spidey-verse but does that mean Sony automatically gets the rights to any NEW character?
Hmmm....

Anyway, yeah probably Black Cat, and I'd love to see Felicity lead her own movie.
OR I don't know who owns the rights to Arachne, but she's a very cool character and I'd love to see her in a solo movie. Or even a supporting role.

See when questioned about Miles, Avi said they wouldnt use him or 2099 or Ben Reily...because Peter was Spiderman. Nothing about rights..I really wish we got to see the inside of the contract...

and here too

So Sony confirmed they wont do him..not they dont have him. IF, and thats a big IF...they have Miles then they have Silk...

It's an interesting idea but what worries me though is that Sony's Spider-man shared universe needs to have a proper plan and not have these plans come before the plot in these films. With TASM 2 there was too much focus on having a set up for future spin off films and plots when TASM 2 should have just focused on a flowing story. TASM 2 reminded me of Iron Man 2, where Iron Man 2 was basically a commercial for "The Avengers".

I'm fine with Sony having a female lead in one of there films and it just depends who is chosen to lead a film, if they give the character enough depth and a good story then the film could potentially be interesting.

In the years following the dawn of Marvel's film studio, Sony allowed Marvel to re-negotiate the film contract to include a bigger cut of the tie-in licensing (all those spiderman action figures and bed sheets and toothbrushes).

Marvel tried a similar tactic with Fox and Fox said Go F Yourself.

This is why Marvel is willing to create new characters and IP within the SpiderMan comics (thus allowing Sony to bring them to the screen) but not the Fantastic Four comics.
