Spider-Man's Death. Bendis vs Slott

Spider-Man's Death. Bendis vs Slott

Why Dan Slott is a horrible writer.

Editorial Opinion

This will be a quick and to the point editorial. Why was everyone so angry when Slott killed Spider-Man? I'll tell you why. Because he did it in such a horrible way. Everyone knows we'll see Peter return. It's just a matter of time really. But Slott and Marvel have talked about the backlash in a way that makes it sound like fans are all upset simply because he was killed which isn't true. We were upset because of the way it was done. It was a terrible plot that sounded like it was plotted by an 8 year old boy. "They switched brain!!!" And second it had no emotional depth.

To prove my point I'd like to point to Ultimate Comics Spider-Man issue 160. Spidey dies. Man he dies. But you know what people loved it. He died a hero, he died saving Aunt May, Gwen, and MJ. Not to mention the entire neighborhood. The stories afterward in "Fallout" were fantastic. But when Slott had to do the same thing with the 616 Spidey he failed. Horribly. Spidey doesn't go out a hero. Nothing was done to turn our emotions. He trades bodies with Doc Ock and dies. It had no emotional depth whats-so-ever.

So to sum up I'm simply saying people wouldn't have gone so crazy if it was done in a good way, like Superman's death, or Cap's death, or Thor's or even Spider-Man's death a year eariler in Ultimate Comics. You should see the look on people's faces when they ask me how Spider-Man died and I have to tell them he died because Doctor Octopus switched their minds right at the moment Doc Ock dies. Everyone of them has said more or less "that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard." And make no mistake Marvel, it was a dumb way to kill Spider-Man. I have no idea how Dan Slott has kept his job as long as he has.

Rant over.

to be fair, Peter's not actually dead. So really, we've gotten a brain swap arc for a year. Not really much of a bad thing, considering Superior Spiderman has actually been a decent read.
He'll be back soon, and chaos will ensue as he tries to piece his life back together.

Ultimate's death was different, cus he was DEAD dead. as in planned, permanently.

Also, if somebody said a Batman arc was coming up soon where Joker takes control of Bruce's brain and vice versa, people would flip out and line up around the block for it. It's not a stupid idea, cus its exactly the kind of thing comics can pull off.

Spidey died at least twice before Superior. There was the battle against Morlun (didn't REALLY die, but I still count it) and then when Doom pretty much killed everyone in Secret Wars (revived by alien tech).

I agree. No emotion what so ever. But then there is hardly a Slott written story that actually has ANY emotion in it!

See, rather than this gimmick of killing off Peter Parker but teasing his return, a good writer could've tweaked the concept and delivered a story which would've rivaled the symbiote saga.

Rough concept - the dying Doc Ock kidnaps Peter Parker and implants a chip in his brain or something, which causes a copy of Doc Ock's brain pattern into Spider-Man. Final battle and stuff happens, Peter seems to win. A while later, the chip (or whatever) begins to kick in, and Peter finds himself influenced by Doc Ock, driven to do things he wouldn't normally do. He starts down a darker path, and things spiral out of control from there.

It's rough, and it follows a similar concept, but at least there's none of this trickery about Peter being dead - it's made pretty obvious things will eventually go back to normal as the arc would be about Peter figuring out how to silence Ock's influence before he loses control completely, and there'd be no need to pretend otherwise and insult the audience. Plus, hopefully the writer would actually have talent.

@VIRILEMAN Plus, he was brought back to life in either the same issue or the very next issue so there was never an opportunity really for backlash. Plus the Morlun story evolved the character and his relationship with M.J. Since OMD nearly every Spidey story has made him more and more of a loser with the exception of Big Time. But look where that led to.

I've been reading every issue of Superior Spider-Man, and let me tell you it's freaking BRILLIANT. Slott knows what he's doing, and he's doing a great job with it too. I think the main problem is once one person says they hate Slott on the internet, everyone just goes with it. Really, Slott is doing a great job. Read it for yourself. It's been awhile since I flipped out after reading a comic, and the issue with Massacre did that to me. And besides, had a website like this existed during Ben Reilly, Symbiote Suit, six-armed Parker, etc, there would be rage wars against them.

I didn't think it was poorly written at all. I loved how the odds were stacked against Peter the entire time, and even when it looked like he was about to win, Ock edgged out right at the end.

The book set up Carlie's suspicion, it set up Jonah's new attitude to vigilantes, and Scorpion's eventual revenge. And brought things with MJ to a head, finally making progress on the peter/mj relationship.

Peter tried, he lost. Ock won. Which i know sucks for everybody, but sometimes that happens.
But think how sweet the rematch will be. I love Superior Spiderman, its an awesome read. All Power, some psychosis, no responsibility.

I've really enjoyed Superior Spider-Man. Ock-Spidey is hilarious.

I think the mistake Marvel (not necessarily Slott) made was billing the ASM #700 as the 'death' of spider-man. Peter isn't dead, he's still in there, we all know he'll be back. If it had have been billed as just a mind swap/take-over storyline (which it actually is) it could easily have been regarded as one of the best Spider-Man stories of recent years (which it actually is).

The death of Peter Parker in USM (my favourite comic by far), however was absolutely incredible. I'm not ashamed to admit I cried like a little bitch. That was a real death.
