The Michigan Comics Collective is a not-for-profit organization founded in the past year with the goal of bringing together Michigan talent in the spirit of artistic collaboration. The organization's website describes their vision beautifully:

"The Michigan Comics Collective seeks to bring together creators, retail stores, and publishers from the great state of Michigan. We want to help writers find artists and artists to find writers. Everybody to find a letterer. Something for inkers and colorists to do. We help creators finish stories. And get some eyeballs on those stories. And give creators the thrill of seeing their work on the shelves of their own local comic store... We bring everybody together to get stuff done. And we try to do some good at the same time."

On May 29th, the collective launched their first "kickstarter" effort in hopes to raise funds in order to produce an anthology. The anthology will feature several stories developed by many of the brilliant creators from the collective. The group is hoping to raise enough money to produce more than three hundred 110 page copies of the anothology. You can read more about the "kickstarter" here:

If you have the dough to spare, please contribute to this very worthy cause. It's what Batman would want you to do.

Also, check out these preview images from the anthology. Pretty cool huh?

This sounds like exactly what I have been looking for to get my graphic novel started. I live in Toledo ohio. Ten minutes from the Michigan line. The idea of traveling to new York to visit agents seems unlikely any time soon. Whats the benefits of kickstarter? I have talked to a few people about it before, but never got started cause we had a baby.

The biggest benefit of a kickstarter is getting funding for a project. It can be tricky to crowd source stuff because you have to be able to get the word out there in a big way.

You don't necessarily have to live in Michigan to be involved with the collective. I'm pretty sure there are even some people from outside the U.S. who are collaborators. If you want some more info, shoot an e-mail over here: [email protected]

and definitely check out the website for the collective here: http://michigancomicscollective.org/

So I basically come to them with my story, and they help me find an artist and such, and help publish?

That's certainly a possibility. They will definitely be able to connect you with artists. The publishing part is easier said than done. The collective can help you find printers if you want to self publish but financing would be up to you and any others involved. They can also help you as far as contacting and submitting your work to professional publishers for consideration.

Also, the collective will offer you other opportunities, such as the anthology, to help get your name and your work out into the world. It's all about collaboration and helping to promote creators. They can even set you up with a network of retailers who will sell your book.
