David S. Goyer Says CONSTANTINE TV Series Closer To Source Material Than Film

"That's a tricky one on network TV," says Goyer on whether Constantine will smoke. "He will have his signature trench coat and skinny tie. I would say that the show clings more closely to the sourse material then the film did," he added.

Constantine NBC David S. Goyer

I AM Rogue caught up with NBC's Constantine pilot showrunner David S. Goyer to discuss where the project currently stands. In what will surely please comic book fans, Goyer revealed that Matt Ryan's (Layer Cake) Constantine will be true to the source material. Said Goyer, "We start shooting next week. Shooting the pilot. We only have four series regulars but we've cast them all now. I'm proud to say that Constantine is actually being played by a British guy. Matt Ryan and he is going to have blond hair." When asked if Ryan's version of the fan favorite comic book character will smoke, Goyer shared, "That's a tricky one on network TV. We're negotiating right now. He will have his signature trench coat and skinny tie. I would say that the show clings more closely to the source material then the film did. Even though the film was interesting."

Goyer went on to add that the series will be close to the Alan Moor run. "Yeah," confirmed Goyer, adding, "And quite a few other characters from the comic books and possibly from the DC universe should we move forward will be showing up."

Lastly, Goyer spoke about some of the supporting cast recently announced. "Harold Perrineau. He's amazing. He plays an angel but not the kind of angel from Touched by an Angel. He's fantastic. Charles Halford who plays Reggie Ledoux on True Detective. He plays Chas. I don't know if you know that character from the comic books. He's sort of Constantine's strong man/friend. Lucy Griffiths who is ... I don't want to say too much about her. She' s an amalgam of characters. Hopefully, touch wood, There will be another recurring character announced. Pretty cool actor who fans will know the character he plays from the comic books as well."

Well, at least he'll have blonde hair.

If they go ahead with Justice League Dark, I want a more accurate Constantine and drop dead sexy Zantana.

He HAS to be a chain smoker. How else are they going to do the cancer arc later down the line?

I have faith in Goyer.

But absolutely NO faith in NBC.
A lot of their sic-fi/fantasy based attempts are revealed to be nothing but giant cheese-fests over time.
They've come up with lots of great concepts. But have no ability to maintain their resolve.
Cheese ensues.

Yeah DC is moving Forward right now. Now we get FLASH, soon CONSTANTINE (maybe Zatanna in it), ARROW moves also Forward. Then we get BATMAN, new suited SUPERMAN and WONDER WOMAN on top on that.

Ist a good time to be a DC COMICS BOOK FAN :)

Very much looking forward to this. I actually really enjoyed Keanu's Constantine. It introduced me to the character. They've cast some very talented actors thus far, and seem to be sailing along without any issues.

Not too worried about the smoking, but I would like them to keep the lung cancer angle, even if they have him as a former smoker.

Looks good so far, unlike that Gotham mess at Fox...

Please NBC keep him smoking or get out! I'm pretty sure this constantine will do more than reeves own did to me, in a good way.

There's no Alan Moore run. Alan Moore invented the character, but never really wrote any of the comic book series. NUFF SAID.

@ Soto
NBC has taken lots of great Sci-Fi Fantasy concepts/ideas and drummed them into mediocrity.

Revolution. Munsters. Grimm (a POSSIBLE exception). Dracula, The Event, The Cape, Night Rider . . .
the list goes on.

Hannibal does not count on this list or in this discussion. I'm not saying that NBC has never produced a good quality show. I am saying that when it comes to sci-fi/fantasy, NBC likes to over brighten it - likes to cheese it up.
I'm not optimistic about it's quality. Yes, of course we'll have to wait and see. Bu their track record worries me.

You guys act like NBC could just have a chain smoker and move on. They along with other network channels agreed to responsible use of cigarettes in primetime programming and have been adhering to this for a long time now. They're not going to change that for this.

Hack.

@BlackJack

I'd say he's better at formulating a story with a beginning, middle and end. Being a "brilliant ideas guy" implies he has a shit ton of great, original ideas or does new and great things all the time. If you meant story man, I can agree. Ideas man? Nop.
