BOX OFFICE: Cowboys & Aliens Manages To Beat The Smurfs To #1; Captain America Update!

Phew, that was a close one! Yesterday, the two were neck and neck for the #1 spot at the US box office, but Jon Favreau's latest movie has reigned supreme...just! Hit the jump for details...

Yesterday, we brought you the news that The Smurfs had tied with Cowboys & Aliens at $36.2 million a piece at the US box office. This was something of a shocking development as Jon Favreau's latest movie was expected by Universal to open somewhere between $40 million to $45 million range, while The Smurfs were expected to debut at a disappointing $25 million to $30 million. Well, it's good news for the Iron Man and Iron Man director, as he just managed to beat the movie adaptation of the popular cartoon. But not by much! From Deadline:

It's now official. According to today's actuals, DreamWorks/Universal's Cowboys & Aliens narrowly beat Sony Picture's Smurfs for the weekend win $ $36,431,290 vs $35,611,637.

Cowboys & Aliens will start rolling out internationally over the next few weeks, so it's far too early to know whether it will rake in a decent profit...with a $160 million budget and highly anticipated movies like Rise of the Planet of the Apes coming out this month, that may not be all that easy! In slightly better news, Captain America: The First Avenger went up with a revised $25.6 million vs. $24.9 million.

This shitfest should have opened in 3rd place or lower. It looks insultingly stupid. At least the number 1 spot is going to a good movie. Favrues best work.

@Neobaggins - I don't know who this "Favrues" is of whom you write. "Cowboys & Aliens" was obviously NOT FAVREAU's best work; in fact, it may turn out to be his worst, both critically and commercially.

His next feature film is a "Night at the Smithsonian" take on Disneyland, where the rides and/or characters come to life. Yay.

Cowboys&aliens deserve to be #1, it is a good movie. The smurfs is just another chipmunk movie and a way for big corporations to advertise junk, like men in black 2.

Let's be real folks. Even though Cowboy's eked out a #1 spot their opening weekend it under-performed next to Smurfs. Cowboys get the bragging rights but the big news goes to the little blue guys who weren't suppose to be a blip on the radar. It was embarrassing how close Doogie Howser and the Smurfs got to the likes of Danial Craig & Harrison Ford!

Ah, spelling correction; the foundation of a lame comeback. Hey, get a regualr name. No one cares how it's spelled.

"Cowboys & Aliens" was obviously NOT FAVREAU's best work; in fact, it may turn out to be his worst, both critically and commercially."-AlanWarlock

I don't like to use "imo" too much because I like to think that people are smart enough to know that most things said here are opinions. So it's really ironic when you say it's "obviously NOT FAVROE'S best work". That's OBVIOUSLY your opinion.

Thanks for playing. There's a bowl of peppermints and candy corn on your way out. Grab some.
