Yesterday, we brought you the news that
The Smurfs had tied with
Cowboys & Aliens at $36.2 million a piece at the US box office. This was something of a shocking development as Jon Favreau's latest movie was expected by Universal to open somewhere between $40 million to $45 million range, while
The Smurfs were expected to debut at a disappointing $25 million to $30 million. Well, it's good news for the
Iron Man and
Iron Man director, as he just managed to beat the movie adaptation of the popular cartoon. But not by much! From
Deadline:
It's now official. According to today's actuals, DreamWorks/Universal's Cowboys & Aliens narrowly beat Sony Picture's Smurfs for the weekend win $ $36,431,290 vs $35,611,637.
Cowboys & Aliens will start rolling out internationally over the next few weeks, so it's far too early to know whether it will rake in a decent profit...with a $160 million budget and highly anticipated movies like
Rise of the Planet of the Apes coming out this month, that may not be all that easy! In slightly better news,
Captain America: The First Avenger went up with a revised $25.6 million vs. $24.9 million.
