DAREDEVIL: THE MAN WITHOUT FEAR - New Details And Footage For Canceled PS2 Video Game Revealed DAREDEVIL: THE MAN WITHOUT FEAR - New Details And Footage For Canceled PS2 Video Game Revealed

We came incredibly close to getting a Daredevil video game on consoles back in 2004, and we today have new footage and details from a title which would have allowed gamers to play as the Man Without Fear.

If you've played Spider-Man 2, then chances are you're among those convinced Insomniac is planning either a spin-off revolving around Daredevil or DLC which will bring the Man Without Fear into the same Marvel Universe as Peter Parker and Miles Morales (it's about time the wall-crawler crosses paths with his fellow superheroes).

Insomniac is hard at work on a Wolverine game set in the same reality, so only time will tell what the future holds in store for Daredevil.

In the meantime, images and footage from 5,000 Ft Studios' cancelled Daredevil: The Man Without Fear game have been revealed. Originally set for release on the PlayStation 2 in 2004, it was scrapped shortly before being finished.

A version of the game, which is playable, has been acquired by The Hidden Palace, offering new insights into what fans could have expected from the Frank Miller-inspired third-person beat 'em up. It's a product of its time but there's no denying it had the potential to be a lot of fun.

It's said the story was based on the "Elektra Lives Again" comic book arc, while the game was going to kick off with The Kingpin's assassination. That leads to rival gangs going to war, leaving Daredevil to try and save Hell's Kitchen.

As for why Daredevil: The Man Without Fear was cancelled, Sony reportedly pushed for a grinding mechanic similar to the one seen in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, resulting in major issues with the game's engine. As they continued demanding changes to the title, Marvel decided to pull the plug due to it veering too far from what they originally planned.

Spider-Man 2's senior creative director Bryan Intihar was recently asked about the sequel's Daredevil Easter Egg (the "Nelson & Murdock" sign was missing when the game launched but has since been added in a patch) and coyly responded, "That's a good question. Stay tuned. Good find though."

Since then, eagle-eyed gamers have also unearthed a bizarre-looking room which appears to have ties to The Hand, the group of ninjas Daredevil frequently battles in the comics.

While it's possible 'ol Hornhead will appear in Spider-Man 2 DLC or Spider-Man 3, we can't discount the possibility Insomniac might be plotting an entire game revolving around Matt Murdock.

Insomniac would probably be the best option for Daredevil as well. Gameplay wise it wouldn't need to be drastically different from Spider-Man.

@Urubrodi - I hope you're wrong. I'd like to feel a noticeable difference in their game play mechanics.

I want to feel like I'm pulling off crazy stunts as I trapeze through NY. I want to constantly utilize sound as a means to an end. The noise catapults me from one lock-on to the next.
Urubrodi - 11/14/2023, 8:40 AM
@KennKathleen - Of course they'd need to adapt elements of the gameplay to fit the character, but things like traversal, combat, using his senses in a similar way as to a spider sense, the environment itself as they already have New York mapped out... It wouldn't need to be a huge leap from one game to the other, they wouldn't be starting from scratch.

@Urubrodi - id give it to naughty dog. Insomniac I can't think of what they can do with it other than making it a downgraded spiderman.

Naughty dog can give us a fun linear cinematic adventure for him.

I thought it was a PS1 game when I first heard of this years ago. Would've been cool to see though.

I want daredevil first person game
KennKathleen - 11/14/2023, 7:23 PM
@Gabimaru - VR? Sound activates site? A little rain stage amplifies the scenery, gunshots and screams give a pinpoint to crime/ action?

PS: Now read it in Stewie voice, with a higher octave after each punctuation mark.

One interesting challenge of a Daredevil game is incorporating his blindness to the gameplay. I don't think many people would love to be forced to having the entire game looking like his radar-vision (especially considering how much graphics are the end-all-be-all to the vocal hardcore gamers), but a plain "detective vision" would kinda feel like the most boring way to go about it too.

Also, there should be Telltale/Quantic Dream-styled courtroom sections, where you get to decide how Matt goes about winning a case.

@FinnishDude - courtroom aspects?

PS2?

Josh must really need the money to write about this.

Should make it in the style of the Arkham games and release it on PS5.

I would have loved to play it, even by today. It looks really fun.
