Deadpool is the most profitable Comicbook Movie of 2016

The results are in over at Deadline, and they have crowned Fox's "Deadpool" as the most profitable comic book film of 2016! See how the numbers break down, and how it beat out its competition.

Box Office Grosses aren't the final story for most films...  The actual money a studio makes depends on an assortment of factors and costs.  Deadline Hollywood has crunched the available numbers from Hollywood insiders to determine what kind of profits Deadpool  and the rest of the big comic book blockbusters from 2016 ultimately made after considering all revenue streams for the film itself and subtracting all of the assorted costs.

In the end, Deadpool was the highest earning super-hero film of the year, as the film grossed $783m at the Worldwide box office (without ever playing in China), of which Fox will pocket $349.5m. (The rest going to the theaters that showed the film and other parties involved in release.)  Additionally, they calculate that the film earned WB another $297m in Home Entertainment and Television Revenue.  This brings the film a Total Revenue amount of $647m for the studio.

However, that's just half the story...  there are the costs to subtract.  The film carried a Production Cost of only $58m, (just over 1/5th the cost of Civil War and Batman V. Superman) and another $120m was spent on Prints and Advertising.  Add in the $48m in Video release costs, and another $99m in assorted Participation Fees to the actors, producers and directors who had a share of the profits, Interest and Overhead costs, and you get a Total Cost amount of $325m.

Deducting that total cost from the total revenue, we find that the film ultimately earned $322.2m for 20th Century Fox.
This makes it the reigning king of the superhero set for 2016 (and the #2 most profitable film of the year overall), which likely helps take the sting off of the fact that Fox's X-Men: Apocalypse fell outside of the top 20 earning films altogether.

Here's the revenue - cost breakdown for the other big Superhero flicks last year, comparing gross, revenue and costs:

Deadpool:  $783m gross/$647m revenue - $325m cost = $322.2m profit
Civil War:  $1153m gross/$825m revenue - $631.7m cost = $193.4m profit
Suicide Squad:  $745m gross/$618m revenue - $459.8m cost = $158m profit
Doctor Strange $677.5m gross/$526m revenue - $403m cost = $122.7m profit
Batman v Superman$873m gross/$681.5m revenue - $576m cost = $105.7m profit

Here's how those amounts would compare with the profits from recent Superhero films calculated by the folks at Deadline:

Avengers Age of Ultron - $382.3m
