Deadpool Spin-Off To Be A Reboot?

IGN catches up with Lauren Shuler-Donner and she talks about the announced Deadpool movie.

IGN caught up with producer Lauren Shuler Donner yesterday at a promotional event for the upcoming Blu-ray release of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and asked her about the proposed spin-off film based on the character of Deadpool:

Donner was playing her cards pretty close to the vest, but she did let loose with one tidbit: Deadpool will likely be a reboot of the character from his appearance in "Wolverine."

"We'd kind of reboot it and make it the Deadpool that's in the comics," the producer told us, while adding that Wolverine costar Ryan Reynolds is still set to reprise the role despite his involvement with Warner Bros./DC's Green Lantern film.

"Yes, he would [return for it]," she said. "I'd like to see Deadpool, so we'll see where we are moving forward on that. I'm hoping to make a movie out of Deadpool."

Shuler-Donner also confirmed that the recent Marvel/Disney deal will not affect the status of the X-Men characters being the domain of 20th Century Fox.

"Evidently not," she said. "Evidently they carved out the X-Men world and kept that at Fox, and so we're fine."

I think this would be the best way for a Deadpool movie to go. Just do a Deadpool movie without the constraints of the "Origins" continuity, but have a few flashbacks (not many) to establish who he is as a character.

What do you guys think?

Also, just one little note: I would like to see David Fincher direct a Deadpool movie. Just a personal opinion. Or Robert Rodriguez would be good, with David Goyer writing.

Very good news! They understand that the XMen Origins continuity is fouled up! That's a good sign. However, it is FOX and I don't trust them with SOMEONE ELSES product! Remember how Ratner had a "screw the fans" mentality? What's to stop them from hiring more writers and directors with that attitude? Disvel/Marney need to buy back their product from these butchers called movie studios.

I thought it was pretty much understood this would have nothing to do with the origins character.

Deadpool will suck big time. Weakest character in Marvels list of characters. Why torture people by making this?

Must you come on to every article related to Deadpool and trash him?

It's pointless to do that. If you hate the character so much, why do you continuously comment on an article about him?

Nice article tyler. Hope it works out that way. Deadpool can be such a kick ass movie.

@ecksmanfan
haha that's what I'm saying. It is kinda sad that they already have to "reboot" a character who has had aproximately 10 minutes of actual screen time... but seeing what they did to him in Origins I'd have to say it does look like they're getting smarter. I really hope that's the case.

He kinda did at the end of Origins. Did you ever see the Deadpool clip after the credits?

Weiner123 @ I hope you mean change his look from the end of Wolverine.

Ozymandias @ "I WANT CONTINUATION IN ALL OF THE FILMS" there can be no continuation because they used the source material ofr toilet paper so a reeboot is the ONLY option.

Damn, well this isnt gonna make any sense. The whole point of Deadpool being in the Wolverine movie was technically the lead up to him receiving his artificial healing powers that would have lead to the normal Wade becoming the insane Deadpool with healing abilities in a Deadpool spin-off. Instead of turning Wade Wilson into Barakapool, if they had did it right, they could had have Stryker intending Wolverine to be the ultimate weapon to wipe out mutants but when he escaped, Wade was the only other viable option so Stryker implanted the artificial healing factor into him (taken from Wolverine) and sent him after Wolverine to kill him. It would have been awesome to see a witty Deadpool fight Wolverine and it would have still have lead to the same ending with no stupid extra powers for Deadpool!

I really wish that they would go along with the explanation that after the end of Wolverine, Deadpool lost his powers (except for the healing ability) and went back to being a mercenary and made his personality closer to the comics. It could still work if they did that and they would never have to refer to Wolverine except for Deadpool to say an organisation did tests on him and this lead to him gaining the healing ability

I'm glad it will be a reboot, not glad that Disney/Marvel has chosen not to buy the X-Men rights back from Fox.
