Disney Shifts Focus To Streaming In Response To COVID-19 With Theatrical Releases No Longer A Priority

Pixar's Soul is coming to Disney+ on Christmas Day, and it seems that could be the norm moving forward as Disney looks to put a much greater focus on releasing titles via its streaming service...

The world has changed thanks to COVID-19, and regardless of when a vaccine is introduced, the movie industry is never going to be the same. That's emphasised by the fact that Disney has decided to shift its focus, no longer making films with the assumption they will receive a theatrical release; instead, they will go wherever the studio decides is the best fit for them.

"What we want to do is leave it to a group of folks who can really see objectively," Disney CEO Bob Chapek in an October 12 told CNBC shortly after an announcement was made about a shift to streaming. "[We want to] make the optimal decision for the company, as opposed to somehow have it predetermined that a movie is destined for theaters or that a TV show is destined for ABC."

The company's stock increase by 5.4% after this news broke, and as Chapek explains, "[Consumers are] going to lead us in the way that they make their transactional decisions. Right now, they’re voting with their pocketbooks and they’re voting very heavily towards Disney+. What we want to do is make sure we’re going to go the way that consumers want us to go."

Investors have been pushing for Disney to focus heavily on streaming with its theatrical business essentially dead at the moment, and it makes sense when Disney+ already has 60.5 million subscribers.

Chapek concluded by saying that Disney wants to continue to give consumers the option of watching movies in theaters, "But at the same time, there’s a lot of consumers that want to experience movies in the safety, comfort, and convenience of their own home."

Reading between the lines here, it seems like theaters are going to become something of an afterthought, with consumers given the chance to choose between watching the latest releases at home or on the big screen. This feels like a smart business decision and one that a lot of people want, especially with the dangers involved in visiting your local multiplex for the time being.

What's going to be interesting is finding out how Disney ensures its blockbusters are profitable on streaming.

...EXCEPT when it comes to Marvel and Star Wars.

@nikgrid - Well Disney+ already became the new home for Star Wars even before COVID from the looks of it.

@WakandanQueen - that is a very valid point! I put The Mandalorian up there with Rogue One, which is far superior to the prequals and later trilogy.

@WakandanQueen - And technology plays a role. The Volume has fundamentally changed the medium and allows for a huge cost savings. You don't have to lug the whole production to the desert, you send a small crew to film a location and then load it up into the game engine and project it onto the screens. It won't entirely replace location filming but it will save a ton on the in between stuff.

@InfinitePunches - If we ever get to the point where all theaters vanish and everything is on Digital, I'll never pay for a movie again.

But I want my theaters back tho

@Feralwookiee - Say streaming. It fits the pattern and is slightly less bleak/slightly more bleak.

@InfinitePunches -
I remember Blockbuster. Sure, it was convenient but they were corporate weasels and took advantage of people. The local video stores were somewhat beter with I Love Video in Austin was the best ever. If you put Netflix and Prime together with something like Disney+ that is a whole lot of entertainment with no late fees and the occasional rental of something not on the platforms is small potatoes.

Theaters will still exist but not as the sole chokepoint for the distribution of content. Places like Alamo Drafthouse who make it a more comfortable experience are better.

@KWilly - Something significant happened in early September and NEW pirated stuff has disappeared from one the main sources for such material. It won't stop peer to peer stuff but it's going to cripple NEWLY pirated material for a long time. So you may be screwed.

@Goldboink - I have heard some theorize that all theaters will have to become like Alamo Draft House to survive the pandemic. I don't mind that. I just love the theater-going experience. The same way I loved the experience of my mom taking me and my brother to Blockbuster and walking up and down the aisles overwhelmed by choices. That's an experience that I can't really give to my future kids. Unless I take them to Love Video which is pretty cool I'll admit.

There is something primal about experiencing entertainment with your fellow humans that can’t be replaced by a tv at home. Gathering with strangers to share emotions Is vital to a healthy culture
InfinitePunches
InfinitePunches - 10/13/2020, 9:47 PM
@Goldboink - Companies like Disney don't really care about cultivating community and culture. Trolls World Tour made more money in 5 days on streaming than the previous movie made in 5 months at theaters, and now Universal is considering never putting a movie in a theater again. If they can make more money, everything else be damned.

I think for Disney not really much changes, since everything they produce now has blockbuster budget anyway. Either way, a smart choice.

Also, I think a lot studios like Disney will invest in exhibition opportunities just like every studio has a streaming service right now.

Honestly I don’t care, I just want to watch the Black Widow. I’m happy to pay for it either by subscription to Disney plus or just buying it as a DVD. And I’m happy to return to the cinemas when the virus is sorted. Sooner or later the dam is going to have to break as all the next films are back in production...
SonOfAGif
SonOfAGif - 10/13/2020, 9:35 AM
@Spike101 - I have been saying it since day 1. Black Widow will shatter streaming expectations. It would be the first MCU film to be a direct to streaming entry and will get people (myself included) to finally subscribe.

SonOfAGif - 10/13/2020, 9:36 AM
@PantherKing - How? Without a vaccine the movie theater industry has no way of gaining public trust for safety. And also movie studios want billion dollar returns. Without people flocking to the movies they are not going to risk taking a huge loss. So who aside from Amazon has the Capitol to save the theater industry?

This might not bode well for Black Widow. Then again, Disney knows that Marvel is their top franchise and financial asset, so I guess once again, things might be very uncertain.
SonOfAGif
SonOfAGif - 10/13/2020, 9:41 AM
@WeaponXCII - The MCU has too many movies stacking. They need to figure out something soon because they will ultimately hurt themselves releasing an MCU movie each month killing off revenue of the prior film.

This is looks like it might have to be this for now. Netflix has some big budget movies that premiered and I don’t see why Disney shouldn’t take advantage and do the same. The theaters are on hold for now it would make sense to release some of their upcoming titles on their service.
