The little voices inside Riley's head know her inside and out, but next June, everything will change for her when Disney and Pixar's Inside Out sequel introduces a new Emotion: Anxiety!
That's just one of four new Emotions heading to Headquarters, but according to Inside Out 2 director Kelsey Mann, this new character promises to stir things up in a big way. "Anxiety, voiced by Maya Hawke, might be new to the crew, but she’s not really the type to take a back seat," the filmmaker says (via Toonado.com). "That makes a lot of sense if you think about it in terms of what goes on inside all our minds."
With these comments come the first trailer and poster for what promises to be the feel-good (or feel-everything) film of next summer. With Riley turning 13, we see some big changes being made within Headquarters, only for the five Emotions we first met in 2015 to then learn they have some company.
Here's the plot synopsis for Inside Out 2:
Inside Out 2 returns to the mind of newly minted teenager Riley just as headquarters is undergoing a sudden demolition to make room for something entirely unexpected: new Emotions! Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust, who've long been running a successful operation by all accounts, aren’t sure how to feel when Anxiety shows up. And it looks like she’s not alone.
Maya Hawke lends her voice to Anxiety, alongside Amy Poehler as Joy, Phyllis Smith as Sadness, Lewis Black as Anger, Tony Hale as Fear, and Liza Lapira as Disgust.
Some of those names might not look right to you and that's because some changes have been made since Inside Out was released. Bill Hader won't return as Fear, while Mindy Kaling is no longer playing Disgust; it's previously been reported that they departed the franchise after being offered just 5% of what Poehler is receiving.
Inside Out was a hit in 2015, grossing $858.8 million worldwide and finishing its theatrical run as the seventh-highest-grossing film of 2015. The movie was nominated for two awards at the 88th Academy Awards, winning "Best Animated Feature," and received numerous other accolades.
Directed by Kelsey Mann and produced by Mark Nielsen, Inside Out 2 will be released in theaters on June 14, 2024.
