Rachel Zegler, who made her comic book movie debut as Daughter of Atlas Anthea in the recent Shazam! Fury of the Gods, is set to play the title role in Disney's upcoming live-action remake of Snow White, and a series of interview clips (conducted prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike) with the actress have started doing the rounds online.
We already know that Disney has made a few significant changes to the original (no more Seven Dwarfs, for example), and in this latest clip, Zegler explains why the "problematic" love story has been altered for a modern-day audience.
"The original cartoon came out in 1937, and very evidently so," she says when asked how this new take on Snow White will differ from the animated classic. "There's a big focus on her love story with a guy who literally stalks her. Weird! Weird. So, we didn't do that this time."
"[The new movie] is really not about the love story at all, which is really, really wonderful," she added. "All of [the Prince's] scenes could get cut, who knows? It's Hollywood, baby."
Zegler was clearly joking about the Prince's scenes being cut, but her comments have still raised the ire of some people online. Still, if you go back and watch the original Snow White, it would be hard to argue that there are quite a few aspects that would be more than a little problematic in today's climate.
In a separate interview, Zegler admitted that she only recently saw the original all the way through because it scared her so much as a kid. Believe it or not, someone took issue with her comments.
