TURNING RED Becomes The Third Pixar Film In A Row To Head Straight To Disney+

There's another release date shocker today, as Disney has announced plans for Pixar's Turning Red to debut exclusively on Disney+ this March, bypassing theaters altogether. Find more details right here...

Disney has announced today that Turning Red, the next movie from Pixar, will now premiere exclusively on Disney+ on Friday, March 11. This makes the animated film the third release from the studio to head straight to streaming; Soul was the first in the midst of the pandemic, while Luca followed last year.

Both movies received positive reviews from critics, but neither appeared to be particularly safe bets at the box office (unlike this June's Lightyear, for example). At the time, it was reported that there was a lot of unhappiness among Pixar staff that their movies were essentially being given away for "free" on Disney+, and you have to believe those bad feelings will only worsen after this.

Disney Animation's Raya and the Last Dragon was made available through the Premier Access service for $29.99, while Encanto debuted on the big screen. As of now, there's no word on why Turning Red is skipping theaters. Common sense suggests this one just wasn't tracking to be a box office hit.

"Disney+ subscribers around the world enthusiastically embraced Pixar’s Academy Award-winning 'Soul' and the critically-acclaimed 'Luca' when they premiered exclusively on the service and we look forward to bringing them Pixar’s next incredible feature film 'Turning Red,'" said Kareem Daniel, Chairman, Disney Media & Entertainment Distribution.

"Given the delayed box office recovery, particularly for family films, flexibility remains at the core of our distribution decisions as we prioritize delivering the unparalleled content of The Walt Disney Company to audiences around the world."

In international markets where Disney+ is not yet available (there aren't that many of them), the film will be released theatrically, with premiere dates to be announced.

They want the kids to demand their parents get Disney plus🤔?

Could be smart...could be dumb💁

@AmazingFILMporg - I'm wondering if it's based on remote learning. They're probably seeing viewership/subscriber count spike while kids are remote learning. It's gotta be, because why else would they not release a Pixar film to theaters? Those were all pretty much big B.O. for them.

Disney plus is the best and worst thing to happen to Disney. They’re practically shooting themselves in the foot with this thing.

Genuinely surprised. Maybe online buzz wasn't as high as they hoped.

Disney needs a sure fire hit for an animation movie. Something that will bring in families. Like a Frozen 3 maybe.

Tbh, this is the first Pixar movie that I'm genuinely not interested in. Not that that counts for anything...

Soul and Luca were both great. Not really excited for this one tho. I’ll wait to see the reviews and maybe I’ll check it out, but I feel like we may have another rare dud from Pixar here. Can’t wait for Lightyear tho.

Cool, I wanted to see it and this makes it easier. Hopefully this means more people will give it a chance, I wasn’t thrilled about Encanto but ended up loving it after checking it out on Disney Plus so maybe that’ll happen here 🤷🏽‍♂️

@Ha1frican - Jessica Darrow's "Surface Pressure" got me good.

Makes sense. Theaters are going to be going dark over the next few months. You just are NOT going to get children and their parents into those seats.

One other thing to remember is P & A costs, which are ginormous, usually 50% to 75% of the films cost. Going straight to streaming eliminates that and thus reduces the loss.

Damn. Pixar used to be the premiere Disney animation studio for a while. Now they’re just the bottom bitch for streaming services. How the mighty have fallen.

Surprised because a trailer for it played ahead of West Side Story on Tuesday when I saw it. Never heard of it before that.

To be fair, all three of these movies seem like they would never have been big box office draws. Disney probably measured overall engagement and was like, "No Thanks".

makes you wonder how many ideas pixar came up with that were said no to in the past. now they greenlight everything and put them to work to get it on there.

Still haven’t seen Soul yet, but Luca was incredibly disappointing. It was like an episode of Seinfeld: A movie about nothing. I love Pixar dearly - WALL-E was robbed, it should have won Best Picture - but they can be a little hit and miss, and Luca was like a straight to DVD release sponsored by Vespa. Here’s hoping this is more up to the Pixar benchmark.

@Tasmaniac - Soul was also disappointing after the first like… half hour. You’ll know why when you see it.

Up until then, it’s pretty good.

Makes sense. Doesn't sound like something that would have done a lot theatrically. Looks cute though, maybe I'll ask for my friend's D+ log in details when it drops
