What If...? introduced Captain Carter, a Peggy Carter Variant who took the Super Soldier Serum in place of her world's Steve Rogers. Another version of the hero showed up in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, though poor Peggy didn't last long when she came up against the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Scarlet Witch.
During a recent Awesome Con appearance, Hayley Atwell pondered her future as this Variant and claimed to have no news on potentially reprising the role in the future.
"I have no news for you, sorry," the actor told those in attendance. "But I share your enthusiasm. And I would love to feel that, if Marvel did find a home for her, that it's a home that feels worthy of her in terms of [her] evolution as a character and development as a character."
"And the experience I've had in playing her has given me the most incredible opportunity to hone my particular craft in this franchise," Atwell continued. "And I want more to do and because I feel that fans deserve that."
As for what she hopes to see from Captain Carter, and Peggy in general, she added: "There is one thing that she deserves, which is agency in the world. And that can't come until certain people in positions of power, namely the men, cede their power and offer her that platform. I'd like her to have that opportunity because then I feel like I have something much more interesting to offer you."
We do anticipate hearing more of Atwell's Captain in What If...?'s upcoming second season, but her live-action future is a mystery for now. There have been rumblings about a Disney+ series, and given the sheer popularity of this Variant, it would make all the sense in the world to move forward with a project revolving around the hero.
After all, Atwell will be taking on a major action role in Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning, so to go from that to playing the lead in a superhero project feels like a logical next step.
