DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS Costume Designer Confirms Balder The Brave Was Set To Appear

There have been rumblings for a while now that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was set to include an appearance from Thor's half-brother, Balder the Brave. Rumour has it he was going to be a member of The Illuminati, with Bruce Campbell playing the character before he was replaced by Mister Fantastic and Black Bolt.

Their inclusion served to make the team a little more star-studded, though we've also heard that No Time to Die star Daniel Craig was being eyed for the role before COVID put a stop to it.

Regardless, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness Costume Designer Graham Churchyard has now confirmed that they at least started to put a costume together for the Asgardian.

"We got very far designing Balder the Brave and then we were waiting, and waiting, and waiting on casting," he tells ComicBook.com"I took it to a prototype stage, we were kind of in that design thing, getting fabrics together and ideas and waiting for an actor."

"Poor Balder the Brave, he almost made Thor 1, and Thor 2, and Thor 3, if I can simplify that. Then, it's just like, 'Yay! He's gonna get an appearance!' Poor guy," Churchyard continued. "I've seen designs Marvel's archive book of Balder's helmet going back to Kenneth Branagh's Thor. So, he's been a long time waiting and I don't think he's gonna make an appearance any time soon."

We can't help but hope concept art or something will be revealed showing this take on Balder, though it's become apparent that his role in the movie may not have ever been shot.

We also spoke to Churchyard earlier this week, and got some intel on the costumes worn by Captain Carter, Professor X, Captain Marvel, and Clea. He also opened up on other deleted scenes, so be sure to check back here soon for the latest on the Doctor Strange sequel.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is now playing in theaters. It's now available on Digital platforms and Disney+, and hits Blu-ray, 4k Ultra HD, and DVD on July 26.

I always thought of a Show starring Balder while Heimdall narrates Balder's adventures through the Nine Kingdoms.

It could be a great animated series.

@OmegaDaGrodd - I know the feeling, but many of us never get that time, let alone know when it's going to be.

With the direction Thor 4 is seemingly going in, I wouldn't be surprised if we're getting Balder in the near future. Might be why they kept him out of Multiverse of Madness.

Having 4 Thor movies without even a hint of Balder feels just insane to me. Kinda like making a series of Iron Man movies without Rhodes/War Machine or Daredevil movie without Foggy. Technically possible, yes, but you are kinda missing something.

@FinnishDude - Or like making an Iron Man trilogy without the Mandarin.

Oh wait

@URCOMMENTSUCKS - Eh, I think it's little different with villain characters, no matter how iconic or important to the hero's mythos. Like, I think one could, just for example, make a perfectly fine Batman trilogy, without ever using the Joker.

The problem with Iron Man 3 wasn't the Mandarin twist in of itself,it was the actual main villain, Killian, being super lame in comparison to the fake Mandarin. If he had been compelling and memorable, people wouldn't have made such a huge deal about it.

So when he finally arrives, he'd better be BADASS, I mean he'd better be just downright DISGUSTINGLY BADDASS! No stupid @ss quips & one liners.
A good template for Baldur could be a mix of The Witcher & Drizzt Do'urden.

@Blastaar -
He was probably intended to be part of the Illuminati and be killed off, only for them to replace with Reed & Black Bolt.

@Scarilian - Well then that's GREAT, because he wouldn't be killed off in his big screen debut, even if as a variant.

@Blastaar - If Waititi keeps the reins of the Thor franchise, you might as well forget about that.

Oh, thank Odin for that. Imagine what the MCU would've done to Balder. You know, the MCU should just leave attempts at adapting any Thor-related character that already exist and should from now on just make shit up as they go along, pulling fanfic-like original characters from their arse like how we saw in Love and Slumber. So that, maybe, one day a competent person will hold the reigns to Thor's franchise, hopefully a complete reboot of this miserable franchise, and do these characters justice.
