It's been confirmed today that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the latest MCU blockbuster from Marvel Studios, has surpassed $700 million at the worldwide box office.
Analysts believe the sequel should hit $800 million this coming weekend, and with Top Gun: Maverick still a week out, there's plenty of time for the blockbuster to near that highly-coveted $1 billion mark. With $297.3 million in North America and $406.4 million overseas, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is a bona fide hit with an impressive total haul of $703.7 million globally.
2016's Doctor Strange ultimately managed to gross just shy of $678 million, so this is a fantastic result and one that was to be expected following the former Sorcerer Supreme's expanded role in the MCU. Since his debut, Strange has appeared in Thor: Ragnarok, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and Spider-Man: No Way Home. He was also a big part of Disney+'s What If...?
The expectation is that we will eventually get a Doctor Strange 3, though Marvel Studios has yet to make an official announcement. That ending nicely sets the stage for a threequel, anyway!
"Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is a one of a kind blockbuster experience," we said in our recent review of the movie, "and a pure, unadulterated Sam Raimi movie that, while not quite the crazy ride through the Multiverse we expected, delivers a fun, horror-tinged trip."
