ETERNALS Director Chloé Zhao Explains Decision To Reference DC Characters In The Marvel Studios Movie

We recently learned that Superman receives a nod in Eternals, and director Chloé Zhao has now shared her thoughts on referencing characters from the DC Universe in her Marvel Studios movie. Check it out...

Recently, a clip was released from Marvel Studios' Eternals showing Phastos' son mistaking Ikaris for Superman (mostly because of the beams he shoots from his eyes). While we know that Superman: The Movie and filmmaker Richard Donner were a huge influence on Kevin Feige's career, it was still surprising to hear DC characters referenced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe!

Talking to ComicBook.com, Eternals director Chloé Zhao revealed why she chose to drop a Superman nod in the Marvel Studios blockbuster.

"I take some responsibility for that," the filmmaker admitted. "I think we're in the business of telling stories about mythology, and Superman, for example, comes from origin of mythology. In many different cultures, there's a form of Superman. And the people that created Superman and the brilliant filmmakers [who] brought Superman to screen, their movies are basically, in my opinion, doing a modern interpretation of that mythology."

Zhao points out that Richard Madden's Ikaris is essentially "[Marvel's] interpretation of that mythology," adding: "It doesn't mean we can't pay tribute and have a good time with these iconic ones that we all love to so much. I mean, who doesn't love Superman and Batman? Clearly our Eternals like them."

Does that mean we're getting a nod to Batman as well? It certainly sounds like a possibility, though we're not sure which member of the team could be compared to DC's Dark Knight! Regardless, it's great to see the MCU reference the Distinguished Competition, especially in a fun way like this (rather than taking shots at the characters or belittling them, for example).

Eternals will be released exclusively in theaters on November 5.

Mark my words, by the end of the next decade, we'll get a Marvel/DC crossover movie.

@SnideCut - A few years ago I would have laughed at this statement. But we have No Way Home and the Flash movies bringing back actors we never thought would suit up again.

@SnideCut - the issue with a crossover is why would marvel split the profits on a movie that may only marginally make more than the movies they already do?

Arthorious - 10/22/2021, 10:47 AM
@SnideCut - I’d say after Discovery sees how much troublesome work they have to do with WB, they’ll sell it to Disney and then we will get our crossover

@SnideCut - Yes that's probably how long it will take for DC & WB to get it together. Also how long it'll take for Disney to get on board after flashbacks of getting into bed w/Sony.

@SnideCut - the next decade would be too soon... they have too many stories of their own to tell between now and then. the DC crossover has to be a very long and slow burn.

Maybe not but it wouldn’t surprise me.Definitely once all the best stories have been adapted I can see this happening at some point down the line maybe once this trend of cbm’s ruling the box office plateaus they might look outside the box reinvigorate the genre.A crossover like when they first did it in the comics,Although hopefully with a much better storyline. But it is definitely going to happen.Maybe mousehouse eventually gets DC under its umbrella & then sky’s the limit.Kinda how Vince bought WCW back in the early 2000’s

I also love that i lived long enough to see the day where cbm.com users have embraced the inevitability of a Marvel/DC crossover.

I appreciate the respect paid to Superman, but I can't deny that it feels a bit weird to have him exist as a fictional character in the MCU.
Origame
Origame - 10/22/2021, 7:58 AM
@Kyos - I think it works. The concept of a superhero almost had to exist prior to the "real" superheroes showing up. I mean, that uso show seems weird without the concept of superheroes already existing. And the naming convention of "man" for a superhero had to exist before the original Iron man for the papers to think of that for Tony stark, despite the only heroes being Thor, captain marvel, and captain america. Honestly I think it makes perfect sense.
Fogs
Fogs - 10/22/2021, 8:50 AM
@Origame - even because it makes sense cause Caps was a war propaganda and others could be created as fiction at the time, like SM and WW.
JonC
JonC - 10/22/2021, 1:28 PM
@Kyos - Marvel likes to reference the real life around us much more than DC does and i think that will always give Marvel a higher 'grit' level that DC will never achieve... real life issues, real life events from history and real life woes of the common man trying to be a hero.
FinnishDude
FinnishDude - 10/22/2021, 7:37 AM
So, in-universe of MCU, do you think they have actually good modern cinematic Superman, since Marvel naturally doesn't exist, so WB/DC wouldn't have any pressure to put their eggs on Snyder basked and rush BvS?

Manmarvel
Manmarvel - 10/22/2021, 7:47 AM
This is on one hand a nice tribute to DC characters but on the other hand, this feels like a slight jab to say that Marvel characters are real heros while DC heros are fictional.
Origame
Origame - 10/22/2021, 7:51 AM
@Manmarvel - really don't see it that way. They just have dc comics in that universe. Feige has shown great respect for many dc properties, even siting the original superman movie as a source of inspiration for the movies he works on.
