ETERNALS Producer Compares The Team's Powers To Captain Marvel And Says They're Not Too "Godlike"

Eternals producer Nate Moore has weighed in on how the team would fare against a hero like Captain Marvel, confirming that Marvel Studios doesn't necessarily have a ranking system when it comes to powers.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is home to a number of extremely powerful superheroes, including Thor and Captain Marvel. While the Scarlet Witch's abilities appear to be on a whole 'nother level, Carol Danvers is an absolute powerhouse and it feels like Marvel Studios has only just scratched the surface of what she's able to do.

When Screen Rant spoke to Eternals producer Nate Morre on the set of the movie in 2020, they asked how this superhero team compares to Captain Marvel in terms of sheer power. Angelina Jolie's Thena was used as an example, and it sounds like she'd give Carol a real run for her money.

"I mean, when Captain Marvel goes binary, that is tough, but it would be as if Captain America - who I would argue is probably the best physical fighter - was powered by cosmic weapons, like, she's going to be a problem, but again, Captain Marvel going binary, that's tough," Moore pondered.

"I mean, look, they're obviously stronger than humans. I think you look at our amazing heroes, like Hawkeye and Black Widow wouldn’t have a problem. We didn't want them to be too godlike because I do think you run the risk of them being less relatable. And I guess Thor’s managed that pretty well. But we don't necessarily have a ranking system."

"We do think they occupy their own pocket and I do think down the line, if and when they were to intersect with other characters," he concluded, "that's a fun thing to investigate."

It seems inevitable the Eternals will eventually cross paths with other characters from the wider MCU, especially given Sersi's history as an Avenger, for example.

They're clearly a powerful bunch, though it is interesting to hear that Marvel Studios doesn't necessarily rank their superheroes in terms of how formidable they are; regardless Earth now has a new group of mighty heroes, and that means the threats facing the planet will have to be that little stronger.

Eternals is set to be released in theaters on November 5!

So they're on superpower levels but not omni powerfull? That's good

@Blergh - "We didn't want them to be too godlike because I do think you run the risk of them being less relatable."

...Stan would sum that up by saying "With great power comes great responsibility"... just because they next level super powered doesn't mean they get to be jerks... that's where the responsibility comes in.

Doesn't Sersi at one point in the trailer say they were admired as Gods or something like that? Doesn't surprise me they come with a serious powerset then.

Do wonder who's the strongest and where he or she fits in terms of power. Right now I think strongest MCU characters are:

1. Doctor Strange
2. Scarlet Witch
3. Captain Marvel
4. Thor

They need to start ranking these power levels for consistency purposes...

I do love how captain Marvel was given the moniker of “strongest, most bestest fighter” after one movie of lazily moving from scene to scene and then barely deciding to show up in Endgame. Where’s Rogue when you need her?

@Oberlin4Prez - Literally no one has called CM the best fighter in the MCU. Feige has indeed called her the most powerful at the time of her debut (which is debatable between her and Thor in terms of non magic based characters) but she has never been the best fighter in terms of skill.

Glad they acknowledge that having characters (like Captain Marvel) be too powerful results in them being less grounded and relatable, making smaller scale action sequences impossible. Nerf every character I say. Makes for more engaging and exciting action scenes, and more relatable characters.

Carol is way too powerful imo. Makes the stakes small.

@TyrantBossMedia - I disagree. Superman isn't too powerful. There are more threats out there that brute force can't solve. Just takes good writing.

@BlackBeltJones - but her abilities means she's also not limited to earth... so when you need her and she could easily win a fight... she may not be there... as we saw in IW, Avengers 1, 2, etc.

Zero buzz for this movie.
Nobody cares.
I don't either.

@Imprtracr1 - im super excited. Looks really different (at least cinematography wise) from the usual mcu fare, which is sort of what the franchise needs right now

Those 24 hour pre-sales indicated otherwise!

@Imprtracr1 - If you're going to troll, at least be entertaining.

And this is factually incorrect, a simple google search can destroy this lol.

Lol. Even marvel producers are on the cusp of saying Captain Marvel kind of sucks. It is a problem with making a hero too powerful.
LongMayHeReign
LongMayHeReign - 10/14/2021, 7:28 AM
@MrDandy - That's like saying Superman sucks tho, that makes no sense. All you have to do is write her well, give her a legit challenge, and limit her usage in team movies to only the biggest threats...just like Superman!
MrDandy
MrDandy - 10/14/2021, 7:41 AM
@LongMayHeReign - i actually agree for the most part. The only difference is all the other heroes are pretty well balanced in the mcu and Cap Marvel kind of throws that off. Superman is at least also surrounded by (mostly) god like beings.
JonC
JonC - 10/14/2021, 9:32 AM
@LongMayHeReign - The thought that Superman sucks (ie is too powerful) is why Nolan didn't want him in the Batman movies. Its the struggle that interesting and that struggle is Batman in not being godlike or having personal issues related to his father and mother's death.
LongMayHeReign
LongMayHeReign - 10/14/2021, 9:34 AM
@MrDandy - I mean when you really look at it she's very equal if not maybe only slightly more powerful than Thor, who I haven't heard anyone say is problematic due to his power.

It just all depends on how CM is portrayed. For the majority of her solo film she was in no way crazy OP, it was literally just the last 15 minutes when she unlocked her Binary form.

This is actually no different than Thor getting his power back in Thor 1 or Superman letting loose after his talk with Jor-El in MOS. Except where Thor and Supes had legit challenges from Loki and Zod, Carol didn't and she just ran through everything put in her path. Which adds to the general consensus that she is far more liked in Endgame because even though she is still a powerhouse who can no sell a headbutt from the Mad Titan she still failed both times she tried to get the gauntlet away from him.

So like I said (which I'm guessing is one of the points you agree with) give her a challenge and she works perfectly!
LongMayHeReign
LongMayHeReign - 10/14/2021, 9:39 AM
@JonC - That's why you have to give these OP characters true conflict. Whether it be deep inner emotional conflict that effects their ability to perform on the battlefield or a true physical threat that they must overcome.

There's zero reason why Thor can work being as ridiculously powerful as he is, and Superman and Captain Marvel can't.

i think we can agree that captain marvel is too strong, she almost bested thanos and the fact that they constantly have excuses for her to not be in a scene/movie also shows how op she is ...
